...about the authorization for indefinite military detention of US citizens in the defense funding bill in the US Senate. There was an attempt yesterday to remove this ridiculous language from the bill (the Udall amendment) that unfortunately failed.
Basically it's saying that if the US military suspects you're a terrorist, then they can detain you indefinitely without trial – no lawyer, no judge, no jury.
“But nick, those nasty terrorists deserve it because they hate America, and if you're not a terrorist you have nothing to fear!” Right. Remember how warrants used to be required for wiretapping American citizens, then how they established a secret count (FISA) to allow warrantless wiretapping, and how today you can be wiretapped by the Feds whenever they please?
You don't have to be a black helicopter conspiracy theorist to see the slippery slope here.

If you don't agree with this (or any legislation, for that matter), let your reps know! They need a reminder every now and then about whom they serve.

I'm from the uk, unless this applies here too?

Well it is a bill in the US senate. Although Tony Blair did surrender your foreign policy to us back in 2003...
-
I don't necessarily agree or disagree with this... I can see both sides of the arguement.
However, the sad fact is that for as long as this remains in effect, it will be misused and abused by a significant amount those who have the ability to do so.
With that being said, let us see it removed. Too much power is too much power, regardless of who has it.

I applaud you. You know your shit. Thanks for letting us know. I'm looking up the numbers to call right now. Oh and sorry Brits.... But your ship sailed awhile ago. Looks like we might be sharing that boat too soon... -
I don't like hippies, not a secret. But the crap that's been added to the blank slate of "Homeland Defense" authority pisses me off too.
Call it the Texan in me, but damn where is it going to end? I actually did the same thing many years ago when the first bill passed.
Welcome to the club! ✊

If you are not an American citizen, the US already has these powers of detention/rendition.
-
Maybe there is actually substance to the 'New World Order' theologists views! They'll do whatever the heck they like regardless so can we as the public actually have an impact? 🔨

I'm pretty pissed right now... I'm on the phone with my politicly ignorant mother, and I just read the details about this at infowars.com to her and her response was "well then you better stop threatening and arguing with people"... *click*... Even my own mother is content with just being a sheeple... I'm annoyed and pissed...

Calling them was surprisingly painless, Blumenthal's staff answered the phone right away and was very polite. Lieberman made me press 1 to leave a message (can't say I'm surprised!). I've been sending emails for years, but hearing phones ring reminds 'em that there's a real person on that line, not just someone e-signing a petition against the Internet's latest outrage-du-jour.And "The Man", I'm with ya. We need the legal tools (and firepower) to find the bastards, but not at the cost of our basic freedoms. This country's faced far more dangerous enemies without giving them up, why surrender them now?

You mean "United States" citizen. I know I seem like an asshole, but if you really read up on this country and what it has become, you will see there is a difference. There is a Constitution of the United States of America we are all aware of, as well as a United States Constitution that is actually in effect. If you are not an American citizen, the US already has these powers of detention/rendition.

Also not trying to seem like an asshole. But there's a lot more going on than most conspiracy theorist enthusiasts are even aware of.

Yeah, having worked for "The Man" now for over 15 years, with a two year break for the private sector, I've seen both sides of this.
Yes, we need to protect our country. Yes, there are bad people out there (remember I lived and worked in Pakistan for 18 months) and we (The US govt) need a way to get them. But to take away the basic rights that we (Americans) hold dear (and are legal, for any hippy's who want to interject) negates the whole point of protecting our country in the first place.
Its a fine balancing act of freedom and security that in my (non Govt persona) opinion has already been crossed. ✊

Just called The offices of Al Franken, John Kline, Amy Klobuchar, and Michelle Bachman... I called the state legislators just for the hell of it. I actually got to talk to John Kline personally for about a minute. He assured me he will look at this, and it is important to him and will hold this issue as one of high importantance. Kinda unexpected! The other calls were just voicemails, and clerks.

You go, nick! My state reps and senators are quite easy to contact and even welcome the contact. Heck, they're even on FB. If you haven't read the language of the bill, you should. Warrantless wiretapping is especially scary to me.If you don't agree with this (or any legislation, for that matter), let your reps know! For those of you who have been asking how you change "things" (occupy movement folks) this is how. Your politicians like their jobs so they listen to the people who elect them...if you aren't talking to them then, guess what...they aren't listening to you. And I mean speaking directly. Learn from the millions of lobbyists that live in D.C. and spend their lives getting face time with senators and reps.

And our govt has history of detaining innocent Americans. Anyone remember WWII ?

Looks like this could be where technology bites us in the back side like there is no under the radar any more it's like the low inf rule being amended lol, joking aside tho it's shit that ur privacy can be invaded without warrant but the people invading it are among the probably most corrupt and shadey but without this level ov invasion will we remain safe in the future I wonder ?!?

Right on Nick. We are always on the edge of a police state. Any country is. We have to push these things back best we can!

incredible to me that Udall-Webb failed. Habeas corpus right down the toilet.
