I was 28 and sleeping when my mom started yelling their bombing us I was like what the hell are you talking about. The shanksville plane crashed about 40 mile from my house. I pulled the kids out of school and took them home. I had a run to make for Chrysler to Michigan that night and it was very disturbing not seeing any planes in the sky. I'm doing a ride on Sunday to shanksville.

I was a hotshot, fighting wildland fires for the U.S. Forest Service in S. CA. I was 26. I had stayed behind while my crew had left for a 2 week deployment because I was interviewing for a city firefighting job. My girlfriend woke me up & told me what had happened. I immediately drove to the station I was covering till my crew returned and we all crowded around the TV. We spent the day there wondering if any more attacks were inbound. It wasn't until my crew returned that I found out how their deployment had gone. When the planes quit flying they lost their air support. They were deep in the woods, having been dropped off by helicopters. Without air support the fire had kicked their asses. They rode it out by sheltering in the burned area…

Without air support they were unable to re supply. They ended up hiking out with all of their gear & no food. It took them 2 days. They ended up going through the MRE wrappers in the trash bags & licking them clean. It wasn't until they hiked out that they were able to find out why they lost their support. I will always remember how close the nation was at that time. I will also always appreciate everyone who went out of their way to thank us while we were working the rest of that year. I will never forget the 343 brothers I lost that year, nor the thousands of others who are gone but not forgotten.
