The Christian god has existed from the beginning of the earth :)Morality, laws, and ethics existed long before the Christian god made an appearance. Ancient Greece, ancient Rome, ancient Egypt, all pagan/polytheistic and all with laws and codes of ethics very similar to early America. No Christian god required. This is basic stuff.

Well said glman

You all have good points. The bible defines marriage as a bond between man and woman. This illeagally oppresses the gay subculture of america. In all honesty, there is no right answer. As an atheist, i sau you all should shut up and focus on something that will make a difference in your life, instead of arguing on an online forum.

1 Timothy 1:11Where in the new testament does it even mention gay marriage or homosexuality?
All timothy 1:11 mentions is that the law of the lord also applies to others such as homosexuals. In the very same sentence it mentions rebels. Does that mean that all rebels are godless? Are the founding fathers godless?
I guess to be more specific and relevant, where does JESUS (whose teachings you follow) ever mention that homosexuality is a bad thing?
Paul was a mortal man, penning down his thoughts yes? For something as important as homosexuality, Jesus surely must have mentioned it as a sin. -
Also, glman, even the books that DO mention homosexuality are very very vague in calling it a sin. It only appears so clear because of the english translations. In the greek translations, the phrases seem to far more emphasize damning lust and gluttony, not homosexual love. In the situations where homosexuality (aka like 1 or 2 passages in the entire testament...) is explicitly spoken poorly of, it is basing it on facts about homosexuality that are very very scientifically dubious [sic accepted as false] (assumes that homosexuality is simply the lack of satisfaction with heterosexual partners etc)

I was talking with a christian in pm's and he pointed out so many people forgot the most important part of the bible.. 'God Is Love' and people who worship him should try to fill that image..
This is why the Chic-Fil-a thing was so disturbing. Mr Cathy has an opinion which is fine. Do not pretend his opinion was not that Gay's are second class citizens. (If a CEO in south africa said he preferred the traditional white family, do you think it would not be an statement veiled in apartheid-rhetoric?) . The problem is that his opinion was turned into a rallying point pilgrimage by people like Mike Huckabee.
I'm not saddened by Cathy, as his opinion was pretty well known before he made it public...I'm saddened that SO many people rallied to this pilgrimage under the subtle banner of disagreeing with equality for gays.
Chic-fil-a is taking the heat..but really...I think we are all saddened at the number of pilgrims more. -
PS before you start looking for where Jesus (the son of god, whose word is the lords word etc..) ever condemns homosexuality...don't bother, because he doesn't. Homosexuality really isn't a christian issue, bigots just use the bible as an excuse for their ignorance.

Contrary to popular belief, we were not necessarily a nation founded on Christian beliefs; most of the founding fathers were Deist and I forget who but some were atheists.

This quote from an American founding father seems appropriate to this discussion:
"It is from the Bible that man has learned cruelty, rapine and murder; for the belief of a cruel God makes a cruel man." - Thomas Paine, father of the American revolution -

Agreed just because they don't want to support the gay community doesn't mean they should be boycotted. I mean they're a fucking chicken restaurant not anything that needs to e involved in this stupid situation6. It's not very fair. When a company (like Nabisco, maker of Oreos) comes out as pro-gay, they are applauded. No Christians say they are being "hateful" to them. But if it has different beleifs, they are "hateful" and should be forced to change their beleifs. Talk about double standard.
Conclusion:
It's dumb. The owner of a company believes something. He doesn't apply it to his company. Boycotting only hurts the employees and owners of the franchise which may or may not agree with Cathy. It's way overblown. Kinda like Travon Martin's stuff.(and I feel sorry for those who boycott, they're missing out on some darn good chicken)

And don't insinuate that I add to the bible OR don't try to love everyone. The latter is my specific goal in life. :).

Oh man another thread on chik-ful-o-crap! How many times do we have to debate this? Not one actually Christian can stand up for this and answer the questions so why can't it be done. Intellectual people believe in things that actually happen according to the laws of nature, you believe that we are all puppets in god's little toy. I don't mind the owner saying what he believes, but when he takes a cheap shot at other people who don't believe like him, then the gloves come off. Didnt he turn out to be gay or something? I'm inafghanistan so I don't see much of news

Ok I just about this right now. The Adam and eve story is just that a story. Here I will try and make it simple. First Adam and eve were tricked into eating a piece of fruit from "the tree of knowledge of good and evil."ok so they had no understanding of what good was and what evil or bad was. So how could they have known it was bad to eat that fruit without the prior knowledge of knowing what bad was? Simple logical fallacies surround all these stories, you just have to look at them and question everything. I find that story even as a metaphor pretty ridiculous.
