Is it ok for parents to hit their kids?
Forums › General Discussion › Is it ok for parents to hit their kids?-
When I was little, my dad would raise his voice and talk to me like he is displeased with what I did for no reason. I was a good little girl then and always always always listens to adults and do what they expect me to do. But I just don't understand why I would get hit when I did math problems wrong or think about a problem for too long. He was teaching me second grade math when I started first grade. I've always been scared of him even till today because he would get mad at little things and slap me.

Section 9.61 of the Texas Penal Code: the use of force, but not deadly force, against a child younger than 18 is justified: if the actor is the child's parent or stepparent or is acting in loco parents to the child; and when and to the degree the actor reasonably believes the force is necessary to discipline the child or safeguard or promote his welfare.Bigwill, could you please give a reference to the law you referring to? That it's legal to abuse your child in Texas.

It is the same in most of North America. It is ok to physically reprimand your child up until the age of somewhere around 11-12...Bigwill, could you please give a reference to the law you referring to? That it's legal to abuse your child in Texas.

I think it is wrong to use violence against anyone no matter how you try to justify it.

If it is somthing a child seriously needs to learn like dont run into the street, the good lord has created a nice padded area where the pride of a child resides. Le butte

U r so right!Id like to add another thing. At least for American kids. Back before the government didn't do anything about parents hitting their children the kids turned out to be fine. But when they made that illegal my generation and some others from the previous generation have been complete screw-ups. Kids my age don't give a care in a world what they do wrong because their parents didn't punish them right. You can easily ignore a parent yelling at you. But it's hard to ignore when your mom or dad hits you.

Totally agree. I have 2 sons and they both know it's 3 strikes and your out. 1st time I explain why what they did was bad 2nd time is privilege loss 3rd time is privilege loss and an spanking. Insubordination is not tolerated n safety issues both go straight to spanking. " I don't want too" is responded to with "I didn't ask you if you wanted too"Don't smack in anger.
Let them know what they did to deserve it (and it needs to be reasonable and consistent in application).
Smacks on the butt or the hand (short sharp shock to get the point across).. Never the face, or other areas .. Open hand not fist. No implements (you got to feel the pain too).
Warn before administering punishment. It is the last resort.
Above all: Be moderate and patient.
May not work for all kids - other approaches may be necessary.

I grew up getting spankings from my dad quite often. It was only if I didn't obey him though. He would never hit me for making a mistake on a math problem or something. I can honestly say it made me a better person.

There's a pretty thick line between them.

As a kid me and my older brother would both get spanked and the two of us turned out pretty good. But my younger siblings never got spanked ad my youngest sister espiacily. She's only been spanked once in her lifetime and she is the biggest drama queen you have ever seen.

✋high fives are violent too then? A slap on the back showing support is violent too? It really depends on what kind of child it is doesn't it. Whatever works on them, use it. It can be words or punishing them physically.Carpenter wrote:

Why take it to the extreme of a high five, a mutual show of friendship or a job well done, or the pat on the back to show you are proud of someone? You know that isn't what I am talking about, and it is hardly constructive to an open dialog about alternative ways on how to teach a child right from wrong.
My standpoint is that hitting is wrong. Why do you feel threatened by this MoonChild? -

I once rose my hand to a teacher. She didn't call on me. Anyways, humor aside, hitting someone just to inflict damage is violence. Hitting someone for discipline is, well, discipline.Carpenter wrote:

For some yelling works
For some grounding works
For some no allowence works
For some no dinner works
And for some hitting once in awhile worksDifferent children different methods
That's all.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. Look at kids these days that grow up under this new age shit. They feel entitled, theyre self righteous. They feel like they can do whatever the hell they want.Carpenter wrote:
