But if God wasn't going to help those people, you think asking him to do so will change his mind, or cause him to neglect something else he would have done in that time?@ Brown Note: The idea of praying isn't to ask for God to do things for you all the time. You're supposed to place God above everything else, therefore you should thank him before you do anything else. You can pray for things that you want so long as they would not break the 10 commandments (ie, help the soldiers overseas, help those in the disaster area, help my friend find You Lord) those kind of things. God never ignores prayers. He may choose to act, not act, or do something else that would benefit you more in the manner he sees fit.

It's not that it's preordained. It's that god already knows what you are going to do. We still have free will (hence why it's not preordained), but god has already seen what we are going to choose.Brown🎵Note😲 wrote:
It is pre-ordained, but we still had the free will. He doesn't force us to choose what is going to happen, we choose what is going to happen. Surely you see the dilemma here. Everything in your senario is pre-ordained. You have just negated free will.@ Belial:

It shows that you're for God. Besides, if you don't pray, wouldn't he already know that? Then he would know not to do anything because you didn't ask. It's just that this god we pray to is omnipresent, omnipotent, and knows everyone's heart and mind...
Why presume to direct God to do what we want? God already knows everything and presumably has a full agenda layed out into the foreseeable future, which our understanding is for him, forever.
He knows what's on your mind, so why pray, even privately, let alone for show or en masse?
Does the fact that you choose words that may or may not be your true thoughts or desires help anything?

Wow. Shouldn't be surprised how this turned from a prayer group to a discussion on how God works and if he exists. Not blaming anyone, not saying it's a bad thing, it just always happens. Maybe humans just like to argue and/or debate.

First off, the Bible clearly says "No man can see God and live" and those who DID saw him in an indirect way. And there are MANY ways to prove God exists. The second law of thermodynamics for instance. But to answer the original question, YES, I have already prayed for the person in question. Praying for guidance. 👍

Done. Truth.

Is it possible to know the future if the future is not set?
Do you believe in an unstoppable destiny?
If so, free will is an illusion.

Well now that the debate seems to be over, my two sense on this thread:
1. With the debate about God gone, this thread should be good now
2. Wow, this is the first time I've ever seen Mystery comment in a religious debate. -
Wether god is real or not, and wether prayer works or not, it gives those who do believe some hope that something can help them through tough times and there is someone watching over them. And that alone could be seen as an answer to one's prayers.

It's true. Knowing that nothing matters and that we are completely pointless and insignificant is very depressing.
This is why faith exists.

Did you guys hear about the new Disney Universe themepark?!?

There's rarely a reason to comment. The "debates" typically spiral downhill quickly. People usually have very strong beliefs on the subject. Their beliefs (regardless of what they are) are unlikely to change based on these threads, IMO. A real discussion is more likely to happen by pm. However, I'm not here looking to defend my beliefs or push them on anyone else.Well now that the debate seems to be over, my two cents on this thread:

I think when a person believes in something strongly enough they can make it happen. I mean the mind is a powerful thing. Prayer is a way of strengthening ones will or desires. And I don't mean if you wish for something it will just appear, more like positive thinking

I had a lot people pray for god to save my leg, 3 separate church groups infact.
Well, God did a fantastic job there didn't he? *rolls eyes*
Sigh, I'm so bitter lately. -

My mother is now a devout Christian, wasn't always so, so whether I like it or not she texts me Bible verses everyday. 😔sometimes they're good and interesting. Ironically the one sent the other day is kind of like what people are debating about here. I'm more of a mystic not really for a set dogma, but for those that enjoy it here you go: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:5-8 NKJV)

Sorry I didn't want to offend. But we all have different beliefs.

Wherever 2 or 3 are gathered, in the Bible it says God is present. I personally like to think of it this way: The more people praying together, the stronger and louder the message. Like, instead of 1 person yelling "Hey Scarlet!", I'd be more likely to hear if several people in unison yelled my name together. You know what I mean? But, to the original post, I must ask this question in honest sincerity:
Why do people need multiple individuals to pray for one person? Do the most popular prayers float to the top of God's to-do list, or what?
Why is it that more people praying for a thing is better than just one person?
In the end, does God answer prayers for things that he wasn't going to do anyway? I was taught that prayers should ask for things that God wants, otherwise it will be ignored.

Im an atheist, but i wouldnt mind some positive thoughts/prayers for my friend who just deployed

Exactly. Take praying for redemption of sins, he's isn't going to do it if you aren't going to ask. Also, in praying you are giving glory to God.
But if God wasn't going to help those people, you think asking him to do so will change his mind, or cause him to neglect something else he would have done in that time?
