I think you might consider thinking like a free individual with rights and protections, and less like a tool of the state.
(and by state I mean federal government.)
This is exactly what our revolution was about.
That said, there is no accountability in politics any more... Too many people pushing for "progress", (expansion), and there's little we can do about that.
We are doomed to failure on this course. And it is getting worse. It's not that the economy isn't paying enough. It's that the price is too high. The solution is always more, more, more, and it's never enough.
You can't spend your way to prosperity.

It seems reasonable that revenues grow as economic output does. Am I missing something? Your consumption tax would not have the same effect? The heritage foundation has a nice little chart that shows federal revenue in inflation adjusted dollars to be about the same in 2009 as in 2000. Do I understand you correctly that federal income tax is an affront to you personal liberty, but state income tax is a-ok? As far as a consumption tax goes, it would unfairly place a greater burden on those who spend most or all of their disposal income on necessities, not to mention drive down consumption, the foundation of our economy now that we're abandoning manufacturing. I'm assuming a consumption tax would also apply to the purchasing or consuming of labor, taxing income on the front end rather than the back but still presumably coming out of your paycheck all the same. Not seeing how this is an improvement with regards to perceived infringements on your individual liberty.

I said nothing of state income tax, but no, I don't think it's right either. I'm from Florida, where there is no state income tax. Why there and not everywhere else?
If you want to make a consumption tax progressive, you don't tax food, like we already have in place at the state level.
The money is drained from the economy no matter which end it comes from. I don't know why it matters so much to you. You don't care about these particular rights, so why would it matter?
I'm not a right-winger, by the way. I just believe in the constitution, our republic, and the 18th century western philosophers our founding documents are based on.
On the 2 dimensional graph, left/right and anarchy/totalitarianism, I see myself further anarchist than I am "right". I think it's called "libertarian".

This notion that the government is the enemy and taking care of the less fortunate is unpatriotic is starting to wear pretty thin. The truth is that those plantation owners and merchants gave up a big piece of their individual liberty the day they ratified the constitution. By definition, it was designed to strike a balance between individual liberty and the collective good. I believe that the moral absolutism that you subscribe to runs contrary to this founding concept. It's always been about balance. The "free marketplace" and "prosperity" don't exist in a vacuum, and are certainly not concepts that would spring into existence naturally if the federal government just got out of the way. They exist because the state spends an enormous amount of blood and treasure to ensure that they do, not in spite of that investment.

We learned a long time ago that the "virtue" of selfishness and the profit motive alone cannot create prosperity for all. As a consequence we have social programs to address the problems that the free market can't or won't. There is no sinister intent to rob you of your liberty here, it's called pragmatism. It's not perfect, but it is technically the only institution in the world that is answerable to the American people. Try getting that bargain from the corporate wasteland that would fill the vacuum if the fed were weakened further. I suppose you could call me a centrist in the classical sense, but I'm guessing you would call me a liberal or a socialist as if they were insults. It's an optical illusion resulting from the perspective you are viewing me from and the background you are viewing me against.
