Besides, U-235 is a limited resource, just like fossil fuels, that will eventually ve depleted... Renewable sources should be researched more in order to prevent the dependcy on one type of energy.
We do recycle it. What do you think our tank shells are made of? 😄I'm curious where you read we will be out in 60 years. Australia has more Uranium reserves (in terms of energy production) than all the fossil fuels on the planet. And unlike oil reserves, most countries have substantial uranium reserves on hand.

Natural gas isn't a natural process. Gasland documentary. Check it out.

Fagan: Nuclear fission is entirely natural. In fact, in order to accurately determine the age of the Earth, we had to account for the massive heat produced by radioactive elements in the Earth. Uranium is a natural resource.
Thinking a meltdown would reach the Earth's core demonstrates your ignorance of the subject. So does your idea that it's some kind of 'bomb'. Nuclear power is not destroying the planet, or the abstract "environment" that you cherish in ignorance of reality.
Nuclear energy is the only way we are going to buy enough time to get off of fossil fuels and either adjust our usage of energy, or find the next big energy breakthrough.
NOT THAT IT MATTERS!
The Earth is a pile of rock and metal, and we are bacteria infecting it for an extremely brief period of time.
So have fun living your short, meaningless life in anguish over the damage we are doing to a temporary rock.

That said, hindsight being 20-20, it seems insane to put nuclear power stations in Japan, given their history of natural disasters. The reports today suggest things are getting much worse over there. The death toll from the flood is shooting up now with reports over 100,000 now. Power will be removed from millions of people (that still have it), and the nuclear evacuation radii are enormous. They need immediate and massive assistance over there.
-
@brownnote I was simy referring to the US. I know nothing of the rest o the worlds nuclear stockpiles or anything like that. It's possible for other countries to survive on nuclear energy much longer, but the US, being its normal wasteful, thoughtless selfs will run out and probably declare another useless war on another country (perhaps Australia? Lol jk) to feed it's infinite power supply

Now I'm doing it!

Could be. We'll just move to an import model like we do for oil. Uranium ore is quite cheap. Agreed, comparitively. I was simply stating that the general masses seem to believe that despite the chance of meltdowns and such, nuclear power is the answer to all our energy problems. I agree with it being a source of energy while oil is running out, but it can't power the world. Wind energy has a little hope in the US. but not feasible given the amount of space needed. Solar power is too expensive for the time being. Fixing houses and skyscrapers will solar panels could help in some areas (I live in souther California so it's very possible here) but other areas aren't so lucky. Researchers will hopefully either fine-tune a current source or discover a new one in the near future. -
Off topic, but In researching this I found that uranium is only naturally produced in super-novae explosions, and it is one of the more common elements that make up the Earth.
It kind of brings home the fact that the Sun and Earth are already products of a massive cosmic recycling program.
Where will you be in 20 billion years? Maybe condensing into some other planet around some new star... The particles that we are made of were born with the Universe, and will go on long after every evidence of human existence is completely eradicated.
That and we will never run out of uranium. What is economically viable today may last 60 years, but uranium is a significant percentage of the Earth's makeup. We will run out of sun before we pull all the uranium from the Earth.

I agree that japan was not the place to put nuke plants. Certainly not so many. Take CA we only have one plant still. In operation last I checked. And even it isn't operated at a constant
-
So nuclea power is totally natural brown? We don't mess with it? We don't do anything at a molecular level to it, Uranian is natural plutonium is not
-
I Agree though that there is no right awnser, and yep we sure are just bacteria and insignificant! Or are we? Who knows maybe we could have capabilities to change the universe, balance is how nature works, when out of balance things change(maybe evolve) but If we do have said affect, then are we insignificant just floating thru space on a rock?
-
If nuclear is a stop gap to better ways, then fair enough....but u know aswell as I do it comes down to money!!!! What ever makes more and costs less! Rhys evident the world over in every aspect, what would be diff here?
-
And yes, I believ a higher power is the way to go, have faith the universe(multiverse) was created or created otself but it sure has an intelligence to it maybe even a conviousness, and the earth will tell us when it's had enough(when the balance that we dont know exact science of is too far out) that I am sure of!
-
Like our bodies, we now know cancer only thrives in acidic environments ,(or abnormal cell growth=cancer) our bodies are balanced we like a swimming pool and need ph balance 7.2-75 is ideal, and it's the processed foods sugars additive etc in our bodies through poor food that is cause of cancer growing year on year,it's coming out research it,and the earth will be the same I'm sure....

Knowledge is power, poo and urine is natural product....doesn't mean it's good for us to digest, and if we got benefits we would I'm sure, but knowledge is power, nothing comes easy, we know this lesson yet we want it all to easy and quick, and I'm sure this has all played out before, don't u think it strange vast majority UFO sitings were over nuke power plants n missiles?off topic I know but still....
-
@ brown note, you are correct ,I don't know a terrible lot although am def reading up now.still there has been some very silly mistakes made!
-
Plutonium comes from the more common isotope of uranium 238. It is bombarded to create p239. P239 is not as readily fissionable as u235, but it's easier to purify. Uranium 235 used in reactors is a 100% naturally made isotope of a 100% naturally made element. We don't change it in any way. Plutonium is the natural result of neutrons hitting natural uranium 238.
It's more natural than granola, so stfu.

http://www.diffen.com/difference/Nuclear_Fission_vs_Nuclear_Fusion
Fission is not natural in nature, and fusion is what happens in stars, u may read off wiki, yes uranium is natural 100% but the process of fusion we manipulate
-
No all power plants are the same from what I read? But what I am saying is it's something that we should be very very very careful with, and things like fault line japan trench etc and nuke power plant shouldn't be in same sentence? And yes there are around 200+ natural types uranium but there are now 3000+ now that we have created manipulated whatever?

Don't worry; it'll take months after a nuclear disaster for Godzilla to show up.
-
Fission is completely natural as well. It's a significant source heat in our planet's interior. It's vital to take naturally occurring fission into account when dating the Earth based on heat dissipation. Stop making crap up. If you want to discuss this, pretend you don't know every f'in thing and look it up before you spew in the forum.
-
Well there must be alot of conflicting stuff on Internet Ay? If it's totally natural why was it not happening all over the place ? Man plays a part, cotton is natural but it dosent make itself into a jumper? U know what I'm saying brown u being facetious
-
Yes uranium natural etc and the process has so happened to occured in nature?? Well from what we know, but awnser this...if it's so natural and all that why has it 2 containment chambers god knows how thick and every scientist is worried .and chenobyle is still letting crap off, that's enough to say the concentration of fission or whatever is manipulate by man to get the most bang for his buck? Yes ? No?
-
Just out of interest, look up the oklo natural nuclear reactor. Very interesting from a geological pov.
