What is genocide?
Genocide is a legal concept dating back to the Nuremburg trials of Nazi war criminals, with Polish-Jewish lawyer Raphael Lemkin coining the term to describe the Nazi extermination of six million Jewish people.
The crime of genocide was formally created in the Genocide Convention of 1948 to describe "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group".
Genocide is a "very specific international crime" which is difficult to prove, says Cecily Rose, professor of international law at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, noting that it demands proof of the "mental motivation" behind it.

What is a crime of aggression?
The ICC added a crime of aggression to its remit in 2017 to include attacks on "the sovereignty, territorial integrity or political independence" of another country.
The offence aims to ensure that political and military leaders are held accountable for invasions, but it cannot be used against the dozens of ICC members that have not recognised the court's jurisdiction for the crime, nor against non-members.
Legal experts say bringing such a case against Russia's president may require the establishment of a special tribunal for Ukraine.

An official in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro, which has largely escaped fighting with invading forces, said that the remains of more than 1,500 Russian soldiers were being kept in its morgues.
"Now there are more than 1,500 dead Russian soldiers in the morgues of Dnipro that no one wants to retrieve," Dnipro deputy mayor Mikhail Lysenko told reporters, adding he hoped "Russian mothers will be able to come and pick up their sons". -
'Ukraine is a crime scene,' says ICC chief prosecutor
The International Criminal Court's chief prosecutor visited the town of Bucha today - the scene of hundreds of civilian killings, which Ukraine has blamed on Russian forces who occupied it for several weeks.
"Ukraine is a crime scene. We're here because we have reasonable grounds to believe that crimes within the jurisdiction of the court are being committed. We have to pierce the fog of war to get to the truth," Karim Khan told reporters. -
Soviet-era drone that crashed in Croatia carried aerial bomb, experts say
A Soviet-era reconnaissance drone that crashed in the Croatian capital of Zagreb last month without causing any harm to residents carried an aerial bomb that exploded after hitting the ground, a panel of experts has said.
The investigators did not want to reveal the drone's intended target or who had sent it, but Hungary had said that the Tupolev TU-141 drone was detected by radar in Hungarian airspace after being detected over Ukraine, and had entered Hungary via Romanian air space.
The drone, flying at 1,000 metres, flew from Hungary on 10 March and crashed seven minutes after entering Croatia's air space, the Croatian government had said.
The incident occurred two weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine in what it calls a "special military operation", which Western nations term an unprovoked attack. -
A detailed analysis of its metal fragments showed that the drone carrying an OFAB 100-120 aerial bomb hit the ground because of parachute failure, but no traces of military explosives, such as Trinitrotoluene (TNT), were found on it, Ivana Bacic, an expert on explosives, told a news briefing in Zagreb.

Ukraine doesn't have an army 10x the size of Russia. That's an outrageously false claim.
Ukraine had 245k active soldiers to russia's over 1m soldiers. Russia is (supposedly) one of the best funded militaries. Ukraine has less of a defense budget than the New York Police Department.

2) nato allied countries have been giving them hand-me-down and spare weapons. It's more cost efficient for the donating country and cheaper for Ukrainians as they won't need to retrain if you hand them outdated soviet-era weaponry. Just look at the proposed polish jet deal -

Russia has said the flagship of its Black Sea fleet was seriously damaged and its crew evacuated following an explosion that an Ukrainian official said was the result of a missile strike.

Putin's speech on Tuesday highlighted his continued interest in the Donbas - UK Ministry of Defence
Russian President Vladimir Putin's speech on Tuesday highlighted his continued interest in the Donbas where Russia is striking Ukrainian forces in preparation for a renewed offensive, according to the latest intelligence update from the UK's Ministry of Defence.
The combination of widespread missile and artillery strikes and efforts to concentrate forces for an offensive represents a reversion to traditional Russian military doctrine, it said.
However, this will require significant force levels.
Ukraine's continued defence of Mariupol is tying down significant numbers of Russian troops and equipment. -
