China on Thursday defended its stance on the Ukraine conflict as being “on the right side of history,” after a US warning that Beijing’s unwillingness to sanction Russia could affect its relations with other economies.
Beijing has refused to condemn Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, treading a diplomatic tightrope between backing its close ally and maintaining ties with the West by avoiding outright violations of sanctions placed on Russia.
That has put China at odds with the United States and its allies,

Seven people, including a pregnant woman and a child, were injured on Thursday in shelling that targeted a village in Russia, located close to the border with Ukraine, local officials claimed. A separate attack targeting a nearby border crossing was reported by its guards.
The first incident happened in Klimovo, in Russia’s Bryansk Region, some 10km north of the frontier. Projectiles fired by Ukrainian troops hit residential buildings, Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz explained.
Seven people were reported injured in the incident by health officials. A list of victims published by Russian media said a two-year-old boy, a 74-year-old woman, and a 35-year-old man were seriously hurt during the shelling. A later update by the Health Ministry said the toddler’s injuries were moderate rather than serious. The baby’s 25-year-old pregnant mother was also among the victims.

A group of six US lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on Thursday on an unannounced two-day visit, amid growing tensions between Beijing and Washington. The visit has been confirmed by the American Institute in Taiwan, which serves as a de-facto embassy of the United States in Taipei.
“The congressional delegation will meet with senior Taiwan leaders to discuss U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, and other significant issues of mutual interest,” the Institute said in a statement.
According to Reuters, the bipartisan group, which includes a chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee Bob Menendez and senior Republican senator Lindsey Graham, arrived on Thursday in Taipei on a US Air Force aircraft and were welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu.
Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen will meet the lawmakers on Friday.

LONDON, April 14 (Reuters) - One of Russian President Vladimir Putin's closest allies warned NATO on Thursday that if Sweden and Finland joined the U.S.-led military alliance then Russia would deploy nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles in an exclave in the heart of Europe.
Finland, which shares a 1,300-km (810-mile) border with Russia, and Sweden are considering joining the NATO alliance. Finland will decide in the next few weeks, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Wednesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused European countries that continue to buy Russian oil of "earning their money in other people's blood".
In an interview with the BBC, President Zelensky singled out Germany and Hungary, accusing them of blocking efforts to embargo energy sales, from which Russia stands to make up to £250bn ($326bn) this year.
There has been a growing frustration among Ukraine's leadership with Berlin, which has backed some sanctions against Russia but so far resisted calls to back tougher action on oil sales. -

US cannot 'take lightly' threat Russia could use nuclear weapons - CIA chief
The threat of Russia potentially using tactical or low-yield nuclear weapons in Ukraine cannot be taken lightly, but the CIA has not seen a lot of practical evidence reinforcing that concern, CIA Director William Burns has said.
Mr Burns' most extensive public comments since Russia invaded Ukraine underscored concerns that the biggest attack against a European state since 1945 risks escalating to the use of nuclear weapons.
He spoke at Georgia Tech of the "potential desperation" and setbacks dealt Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces have suffered heavy losses and have been forced to retreat from some parts of northern Ukraine after failing to capture Kyiv.
For those reasons, "none of us can take lightly the threat posed by a potential resort to tactical nuclear weapons or low-yield nuclear weapons," Mr Burns said. -

Just because they were ordered to doesn't mean they followed through. Ukraine can barely fend off this invasion and you honestly expect the to account for every fighting aged male and hand them weapons? Don't be absurd. Their gov had bigger worries.

Russian flagship 'seriously damaged' but afloat
Ukraine claims its missiles struck the Russian navy's Black Sea flagship, causing a fire that "seriously damaged" the vessel, according to Moscow.
The Russian defence ministry says the warship, which has been used to launch missiles at Ukraine's southern coast and interior, remains afloat.
The "Moskva" gained notoriety early in the war when it called on Ukrainian border troops defending the strategic Snake Island to surrender, only to be defiantly refused.

Bad weather could help Ukraine
Rainy weather in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region could favour that country's army in its fight against invading Russian forces, which are preparing a stronger offensive in the zone, a senior Pentagon official says.
"The fact that the ground is softer will make it harder for them to do anything off of paved highways," said the official, who spoke under condition of anonymity.

A biolab in Ukraine has allegedly conducted unethical human experiments on behalf of the US government, Russia’s defense ministry claimed on Thursday, in its latest update on Pentagon-funded research in the country.
The allegations concern a laboratory located in Merefa, a city in Ukraine’s Kharkov region, located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of the provincial capital. The Russian military claimed that “American scientists from the lab” conducted a series of human experiments between 2019 and 2021, using patients at a psychiatric ward in Kharkov as subjects.

French President Emmanuel Macron has rebuked US President Joe Biden’s accusation that Russian leader Vladimir Put is committing genocide in Ukraine, implying such claims are not ‘prudent’.
Accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of being responsible for genocide is not conducive to peace efforts, French President Emmanuel Macron seems to have implied with comments made on Wednesday.

US starts funding the Pakistan Intelligence Service tho funnels money to the more organized groups of the Mujahideen (which composed of escaped leftist dissenters, radical islamists, and those calling for a republic democracy) in Afghanistan in the 80s in an effort to build up a resistance to the Soviet-backed Democratic Republic of Afghanistan (which killed off any public dissenters)
Both the Soviets and Americans stop funneling money into Afghanistan on April 14th, 1988 signing the Geneva Accords of 1988.
Al Qaeda isn't formed until August 11th 1988. The US never funded Al Qaeda, we merely funded those who established it - namely Osama Bin Laden who helped funnel money from Pakistan to Afghanistan
