Sorry about this truth bomb I’m going to drop on you which doesn’t involve models.
Sweden did nothing. No shutting down. They have 88 deaths per million.
United States with all their shutting down have 59 deaths per million.
328 million in the United States. 29 is the difference in deaths per million between the US and Sweden : 328 X 29= 9512. So we didn’t save MILLIONS of lives. We may have saved 10,000.
And that’s a maybe. If you don’t think poverty kills and that people losing their jobs over this won’t end up killing 10,000 then you don’t understand how poverty works.

We have neither.

The US on average has a 50% higher population density than Sweden. And that includes our massive crop land and deserts. New York City alone doubles the entire population of Sweden. Did you include that in your analysis? Really, you just don’t have all the information. Well, you do... You just can’t absorb it.Sorry about this truth bomb I’m going to drop on you which doesn’t involve models.

You are 2 weeks away from the first peak. Uk is still has not had its. I really hope we are all wrong and we have all over reacted but the Uk looks worse than Italy at the moment with 900+ deaths in last 24 hours. USA is a continent and needs to be viewed as so. You death figures will he higher than us but we are the size of florida. Biggest problem is travel and as long as that happens the virus travels!!

The experts don't even agree on this virus.
I don't think it is reasonable to do anything more than project possible outcomes based on flawed models with hopes of being close enough to make decisions on how to best save our fellow humans the suffering and pain of either under or over reacting.
While i do know better than to expect too much, I am hopeful that the leaders in all of our governments make inspired decisions that save the most people possible. -

All numbers are an approximation so get over it. I don’t care if they are off by 100 or a 1,000. Fact is it’s not completely out of the ordinary. And in none of these other seasons was i walking around with a mask and gloves. No one that i know was. I’m not saying it’s not warranted. It’s smart to be safe. But to drive things by fear and sell out the stores..... c’mon.
-
Yeah, health care workers are just big sissies. It’s business as usual.
-
Anyone looked at the news in New York lately? Prayers out for the turfers & everyone else there and in other high density areas.
-
I’m sure health care workers would have ample supplies if the general public wasn’t being driven by fear. Is the deaths bad? Of course. It is every year. I’m not down playing death. But look at the numbers of the past few flu seasons.... we’ve had low and we’ve had high. Maybe i’m just blissfuly blind and ignorant but one of the other ones had people around me acting crazy like they are now.

They are for the season. Which usual last until april but can be extended until may. 2020-2021 will start later in the year. 2019-2020 is what we are in now but should end soon.
-
No matter how you slide the time window it would still apply to whatever year you are in so the number compairson would be the same. You would just have to adjust the window and numbers for the previous years. Those numbers are based on when the flu season not the calendar year. This flu season should end soon and we will have the total number but it won’t include numbers for 2020-2021 flu season.

My point being that, they’ve had time to collect data and understand the flu to some extent. I understand what you’re saying, I’m just making the point that we prob shouldn’t compare the two in terms of mortality rate because the circumstances aren’t equal.
-
Yes.. where do you think i got some of those numbers?
cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/2015-16.html -
And you will see how the flu season is between years.... and it gives the number of deaths.... so you are agreeing with me basically?????

I’m assuming you threw the numbers up to say it’s not worth the panic people are having, and I agree with that, mass hysteria does no good. But I’m saying there’s years of statistical data on when the flu occurs and when it’s at its peak. This is our first bout with this virus, there is less certainty, less information overall. The apex is unknown, we don’t know if it will be a seasonal thing either. They say hindsight is 20/20, so in a year or 2 years time we can look back and compare it to the flu, at the moment, we just don’t have the data. And you will see how the flu season is between years.... and it gives the number of deaths.... so you are agreeing with me basically?????

I agree. We never really know until after the fact and all the numbers are in. By then some will say it’s too late but i try to stay level headed and look at the numbers of past and present. I also look at those around me or closest to me. Family , friends and co workers. I try to judge how i’m going to react based on the circles i’m in and plan accordingly. Fortunately i don’t think i’ve ever had someone that I know die of the flu(knocking on wood). Not that it impossible. I hope it never happens and i hope ever one tries to be smart while not going over board.
-
There are those who are coping well and are following recommended safety measures. They are trying to make the best of the situation. There are also a whole lot of overly hysterical people who are acting like chicken little. They are so fucused on what others are or aren’t doing & behaving as if the guy mowing his lawn a mile away is going to cause the death of her family. Level heads are needed with a balanced perspective.
