What are the things that really bother you? We're not talking about 'scary man hiding in the bushes', as bodily safety is an easy 'out' when talking about fear, or greater terrifying revelations. What bothers you to your CORE, that shakes your soul to the very foundations?
1) The unknowable vastness of the cosmos, and how insignificant all of our accomplishments actually are:
Sometimes, looking up at the stars is both terrifying and humbling experience: There is a LOT more than our peaceful little planet, and our little rock is nothing more than a bit player in the universe at large. Tomorrow we could be eradicated by a radiation burst out of seemingly nowhere, all life scoured from our world, and nothing would care. Worse yet, nothing may ever have noticed. That's pretty troubling, considering how we view ourselves as HUMANS #1 for everything.
The smallest screw up or bad-luck, and we're history.
Well, we wouldn't even be history, because nobody would be around to remember, or care.

I don't spend time worrying about things that "MIGHT" happen, especially things that are out of my control. There's also nothing to lead me to believe that this is possibly happening anytime soon.
Don't worry for what tomorrow brings, just think about the here and now.If I think about tomorrow I think of goals I've made for myself and how I'm going to get to that place I want to be, whether it's involving vacations, health or career.
-
Most definitely. As a thought exercise, I've often enjoyed stepping outside my comfort zone to try and take an outsiders look at things. I'm not stating that the above had me more stressed out and cowering about factional possibilities, just contemplating The finality of such an event, and the finite reach vwe really have as players in the cosmic stage!
I do, however, agree. Contemplating 'what ifs' can be entertaining sometimes, but energy is much better spent looking towards your goals.

Same it's actually really hard for me to really think about tommaro except to make plans with my friends or something like that.

A random act of violence. Happening to my kids. Nowhere is a safe place anywhere now. Assholes shoot up movie theaters, schools, malls, etc etc. I have a newborn son. His sister is 4. I'm terrified of letting them go anywhere. I'm honestly scared to send my daughter to school next year.

If there was a 2D person, we could stand right in front of him and he'd never see us. What if there are people living in 4D who stand in front of us? What if were living as puppets? Similar to zoo animals?

What if all that ever was, never was,and all that never was is all that will ever be?

I'm scared that our entire species' existence in the universe will go unknown in some distant future after we're gone. Not rational, but spooks the hell out of me.

My point exactly. You are right that this 24 hr news cycle is making our lives worse. The question is: do we bury our head in the sand and ignore it?Boner Jams '03 wrote:

Ut oh! Look behind you! It's Obama in your gun cabinet!!!! 😨

Personally I'm afraid of the STRAW MAN. An evil, twisted sort. He lurks in the dark recesses of forums, in closets, waiting to pounce on anyone that happens by. Fortunately, he's harmless. He's paper thin. All it takes is a match to shed light on how weak he really is.
Poof. Cosmically, you don't matter at all.
-
Transgender: Be yourself, see if I care.
Muslim: It's Islam I have a beef with.
Urban Deer: I don't hunt rats with hooves.
Confederate Flag: I don't think I've ever seen one of those before..
Abortion: I'm pro baby murder.
Climate Change: I literally work in our federal office of climate change at NOAA.
Gun Cabinet: I don't own one, but if the President was hiding in mine, I'd ask for an autograph.
(See what I mean about the straw man? He creepy.)

Those fears are not irrational. Just because it hasn't happened to you, or someone you know, doesn't make it irrational. Some things are simple and don't need to be spun into a bunch a bullshit like you like to do.OneToedBastard wrote:

These fears are not rational from a statistical perspective.
According to the CDC, 142 kids between 5 and 14 years old were killed in 2013 with firearms in the U.S.
Out of roughly 36,000,000 American kids in this age group, the odds are .00000394.
The kid is literally ten times more likely to die in a random accident, and even that is rare.
If you worry about the extremely unlikely event that a child will be shot, or kidnapped, or struck down in a terrorist attack, you will live a very fearful life and negatively effect the emotional health of the entire family.
The news is entirely misleading. That's really all there is to it.
