Slit the main arteries in their throats and hang 'em feet up!
If the law cares about that petty school rule then it's time to set things straight. -
Give a whole new meaning to Live Free or Die.

They're changing your first amendment.
From now on you will only have the right to short sharp and expensive speech, as long as the military industrial complex and far right Christian lobby agree.
I thank Bob every day that we don't have a silly bill of rights.

The guy was being a rude obnoxious asshole at the school board meeting because he didn't like the book his daughter was reading. He was charged with disorderly conduct not with breaking the meeting's two minute rule.
-
This is true. 👆However from the very limited video that shows the ordeal it appears as though the board was ignoring his question. Which was something to do with why the parents weren't notified that their kids were going to read a book with a "scene" where the characters in it were having "rough sex". So I can understand wanting some answers.
-
He'd already got an explanation, an apology, and an alternate choice directly from the teacher long before this meeting. He was just there to make a scene and be an asshole.
-
He also said he would stop interrupting proceedings unless he was arrested, so arrested he was.
-
Give me a link. Guy sounds like am asshole. How old was the girl? If they assigned a book with such a horrible part I assume she is prolly at the age where she is messing around in some form anyways.... I don't know the info so I can't say with certainty. I just think parents should quit trying to shield their kids from the evil nasty world and instead talk and explain the world.
Can't sell any super large sodas
Can't talk about sex in school
Can't do this around my kid
Can't do that.
Who knows, maybe it was a second grade class lol. -
This is a school board that only offers the parents 2 minutes to speak, and they only get to speak once. They don't get to ask questions or have them answered, they only get to make statements. That's fucked up. Not to mention it's a public (government) school imposing limits on the free speech of the people it is meant to serve.
I read the passage that he was concerned about. It's fucking word porn. It's not just a sexual scene, it doesn't just mention sex, it's porn. Hardcore book porn. And 14-year-olds are reading it. I'm not sure what the purpose of this book is. It's certainly not a literary masterpiece. I guess it's supposed to teach kids about bullying or something, but there are much better ways to go about it than this book.
-
As for the guy, he wasn't an asshole. He got up and started speaking very calmly about the book and his concerns that they weren't even notified that the kids were reading porn. The school admitted they fucked up. He asked a board member to read the passage, and the chairman said NO, this isn't a question answer period. She was a total bitch. And then, after spending most of the time going back and forth over what the proper forum was to ask questions, and that this was only for brief statements, some other asshole interrupted the guy and said "your 2 minutes is up." Watch the video. He wasn't an asshole. The board were assholes. They wouldn't even make a comment when his two minutes were up. Did he get himself arrested? Yea. But he's an attorney. I think he had an idea of how to fight the charges before he made the decision to get arrested. Because honestly, they're bullshit. And here's a link for those of you who can't use a search engine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HC2LPu8wHQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryVWfATBT9M And here's the daughter standing up for her father. She obviously wasn't too happy about the book either, else she wouldn't have told him about it and then stood up for him.
Before you start attacking the guy, think about this. What wouldn't you do for your daughter?
-
Right after he goes over his two minutes, another woman gets up, also to talk about the book. She is told "If you would like to speak you need to give your address." She doesn't want to, and why should she have to? Seriously, what the fuck? She goes on to say that her husband called the school principal, who said he didn't want to discuss the issue with him. So, if you can't ask the question at a school board meeting, and you can't ask the question of the school principal, what choice do you have other than to get arrested and make a big deal out of it? After she gives them shit and leaves to sit down, a bunch of people start applauding her.
-
The guy is fully aware of the process for opting out of a specific reading. He's doing this to try and ban the book from the entire school.

Objibwe. If your children were in that school could you get off your chest what you had to say in 2 mins ??
-
I'm sorry but I'm English and if a school had a book teaching rape was pretty much the norm and the type of things to except in life as an adult , then I would run over 2 minutes aswell.
-
I think the title of your thread is pretty judgemental & irrelevant.
I just read the passage on pg 313. It reads like some kind of bad romance novel gone wrong (although I don't think I've ever read a good romance novel).
It sounds like something my 9th grade English teacher would have made us read if it had been published back then. Then again my English teacher was a bit freaky. She saw phallic symbols everywhere & told us stories I'd prefer not to remember, lol. (I went to private school.)
I'd say those kids live sheltered lives if they haven't been exposed to anything like that before. That being said, it (the passage) is not something I'd want to have a group discussion about or have to write about at age 14.
I'm not sure how parents could be expected to decide whether they wanted their kids to read the book without reading it themselves or being provided with excerpts or page numbers of the more questionable material.

Yes, here's another way to handle it..Objibwe. If your children were in that school could you get off your chest what you had to say in 2 mins ??
A book is assigned that you don't want your child to read.
Call up the school and tell them.
They say, "we're very sorry, we forgot to send out the waiver forms. Please accept our apologies and download the form here..."
Download, sign, and return the waiver.
Your child is given a substitute book to read.
The end. -
If they can print the most shocking bits in articles by major news outlets, how bad is it really?
Guy was arrested for a perfectly valid reason.
OP seems to be quite easily exciteable. Almost trollish even.
Only in the USA, and possibly Canada, do you find such puritanical hypocrites.

Wow. Shocked people.? But maybe it's the norm where you live. ( not being sarcastic ) only in the USA is a very well used phrase in England, shit like that you guys take in your stride ?? Maybe it's the norm I don't no but it don't get the reason any young person should be getting that read to by a school.
What are they saying.? To a young girl , this is sex worse still to a young lad this is the way to act round young girls?? If they say no bite them and give it them anyhow ?? After you finish just tell them you love them.
Sorry. But that is bollox -

You obviously don't have kids. Them picking up a news paper is a totally different thing than what they were reading with a school teacher. C R A Z Y

Sometimes I wish we were spawned by the French.

In 8th grade we had to read the book in my hands. It was a great read in my opinion but the main character was raped 2 or 3 times. It takes place in nazi Germany and it's a true story in which the main character tells what she had to experience. At one point it mentions the nazi soldier throwing babies in the air and shooting them for target practice. No one got a waiver to send home and no parents cause a fuss over it.
