Prison healthcare
Forums › General Discussion › Prison healthcare-
Do you think prisoners should receive free healthcare? I think they should. If a prisoner gets sick, the staff could catch it. Then the disease would be spilled out into the public. I work in a prison and I don't want some degenerate with every known disease to man spitting at me or throwing his feces at my face.

Free health care yes but no tv or any fun things to do! So every day is a misery and when they leave they would never want to go back ever again!

I started last week. If you have any questions, they should probably be answered by travdog. He is more experienced.☣ 🎸ӈɪƖƖßıƖƖγ🎸☣ wrote:

What is a viable alternative to free healthcare for inmates?

A lot if people suggest that they work for it. I'm not sure about other states, but in WV they do a lot of work for the state. So essentially, they're getting benifits like a state employee would. What is a viable alternative to free healthcare for inmates?

Yeah, and they get paid around $1 an hour. From my experience (government) it is a value compared to hiring employees or a third-party. Interestingly enough, we did a study a few years back and the inmates had a better error rate than anybody.Ꮶ͜иιɢн͡т wrote:

I think, provided they put in the graft they should receive healthcare, bringing money that goes back into the state can only be a good thing, surely.☣ 🎸ӈɪƖƖßıƖƖγ🎸☣ wrote:

It'd be interesting to see the true cost Vs gain in this instance.

The taxpayers pay my healthcare and I make 13 dollars an hour. The taxpayers pay the prisoner's health care and he makes one dollar an hour.
-
The prisoners healthcare is also not as good as mine. Most of the equipment in the infirmary looks like it came from the eighties.
-
I think the prisoner should pay for his own health care. If he can't afford it then he goes in debt.

That would totally suck if it was an innocent person falsely accused of the crime that got them in prison.I think the prisoner should pay for his own health care. If he can't afford it then he goes in debt.

I have been contracting PT services within the prison walls for the state of GA for about 5 years now. The service is free to them but they do have a $5 copay with other services. Being as they do not get paid for their work in GA but for a couple of exceptions , it is really hard to justify putting more of a burden than that on their families which are usually lower income

Yes, I think everyone should.

Have a heart attack in prison and have one in the real world and you tell me if prisoners have good health care. It should be free because the treatments are bare minimal if that. I can tell you that from first hand experience. And no I wasn't a correctional officer.

Maybe our prisons should be like Russian and Chinese prisons... A big black hole with no sunlight and hard labor.
At least American prisons are still worse than the prisons in venezuela. -

Your chance of surviving a full arrest is higher in a correctional institute than anywhere else in the US. National average is around 7% but in a prison it is over 70%. It has to do with the population being highly observed & lots of AED's as well as people trained to do CPR. You also have a pretty good chance in a casino. Same reasons.Have a heart attack in prison and have one in the real world and you tell me if prisoners have good health care. It should be free because the treatments are bare minimal if that. I think we might even spend more money on that than we do on schools. -
Being the son of a falsely accused man, I can tell you that my dad is lucky to get his blood pressure meds in prison. His dose is the minimum. He should be on a higher dose.

The quality of care will change from locale to locale.

It's actually a fact in some states. As for me, if the prisoners aren't "behaving"(this will sound harsh but it is for a reason) hunger is a good motivator. I know guys who have gotten out of prison and wanted back in. They said they didn't have a good time, but they didn't have a bad time either since their friends were all there and also they didn't have to worry about being homeless, paying bills, no job, ect ect. But that's just my opinion on the matter.YOU wrote:

Most people are locked up for offenses like theft or drug use. Many because they didn't have other options or were never taught a better way to live. If the state wants to take them from the street and hold them, then the state needs to take care of them. Remember, they are people too and they made a mistake in life. Unless they are sentenced to death, they need the basics of food, water, etc to continue breathing. And last I checked, a prisoner in the US is still a citizen, albeit a citizen without the freedom to come and go as they please. Side note...if you can't afford healthcare in the street, the state will offer you free or lowcost care. Same for prison...you can't afford healthcare if you aren't allowed to make a living so the state steps in.
Just my 8 cents worth..... -
A prison without healthcare would be a breeding ground for an epidemic.

I kinda like the way things are ran by the Shereiff in Maricopa County, Arizona. Prisoners wear pink. Inmates get 2 meals a day and it is surplus food. Classical music is all that plays. Oh, tent city... I am all for that!
As for healthcare. I think they should have a copayment or something. They work and get paid. Not much, but maybe they can learn to budget.
Yes, I know I sound harsh, but you can't commit a crime and then get a free ride. -
I think people need to be more open about prisoners.
Not everyone is in there for hard crimes.
Some are in there for minor offenses, should a minor offense be treated like say,.. A murderer?I think yes, they should also get top healthcare too.

I watched a program a couple of weeks ago about Wormwood Scrubs, a notorious prison in London, UK. I was surprised at how respectful the guards were to the prisoners, and the lack of weapons the guards had. They also had many women guards in a men's prison - not girlfriend-type guards, more like mother/grandmother-types. Seemed to work very well. It would be interesting to see a similar program about an American prison to compare their methods of control.

Prisoners should receive basic health care. That's it, any specialized treatment should be totally at the prisoners cost.
