Tattoos in the workplace.

Do you think it's fair that some places exclude tattooed individuals from their list of prospective employees? I don't. It seems like they're putting people off because they have a different colored skin.
-
There is no correct answer, tattoos are a matter of opinion, alot of people think they are unprofessional such as the military, I can see offensive or vulgar tattoos being covered up but again it's your opinion on of they are vulgar/offensive
-
The exposure of tattoos are very unprofessional

None of my tattoos are vulgar btw. I have some tribal, a dark mark, a star, some Chinese lettering, and a skull with the words Lex Talionis written on the inside.

Thats why I (as an IT consultant) always have to wear long sleeves @ the job. Not fun in the summer, but I knew it beforehand. -

Black skin is natural from birth where a tattoo is not. Someone may have a what they think is a cool tattoo where a customer may be offended and not come back. Depends upon the work environment. For me tattoo's should be covered up in the workplace. Tattoo's are personal and fine for personal time but when being paid to work you are being paid to reflect your employers image.
If tattooed cover them up for the interview.
-
Due to the environment my job is in, things like tattoos should be kept discreet where possible.
Same goes for piercings too.Personally I think piercings are more of a no go in most jobs.
I know I have sent a few employees home unpaid due to refusal to take out they visible piercings. -
It's the 21st century. Who cares about tattoos if they are not vulgar. I have a tattoo on my right forearm. I wear shorts sleeves during summer. It doesn't matter where I work. It shouldn't matter anywhere. People that get bent up over an exposed tattoo are pathetic. Simple as that.....

There is no way to set in stone what offensive because no one thinks alike. The only way to accomplish this is to have a no exposure dress code. Less headaches for management.Joyride 🚗💨 wrote:

I don't think an employer would care to lose a customer who didnt want to consume their product because they were against a race in their atmosphere.
-
Body art is a choice. Its personal. If an employer doesnt want their employees displaying that choice thats their perogative. Its got nothing to do with civil rights, ethnic orientation, etc.
In saying that, ive got 3 tattoos but got them where they wouldnt be on public display wearing short sleeves (because im a public servant), but saw a police officer wearing short sleeves and had a large tattoo so its not overly discriminated against in that organisation. If its good enough for the police??..... -

I've only ever come across this while in a customer facing environment. Where staff are obligated to wear specific uniforms. Tattoos are not part of most business uniforms. As pointed out above, you are representing a company image by contractual agreement. In my last position, part of the uniform was shot sleeves. For those with forearm ink, the company would provide them with long sleeve alternatives.
Wen the company changed hands, the new owners were far less strict about it, provided they weren't obscene or hateful in nature. Obscene or hateful is not a matter of opinion it's more about common sense. I'm not offended by a naked pin up tattoo, though plenty others would be. I'm not a nazi supporter but as shocking as a lot of the bandwagon might find it, I'm not offended by the swastika. You'll probably find a lot of people in the religious community who wouldn't either! I wouldn't allow a member of staff to work with one on show however. Common sense. 👍

A tattoo is a matter of choice, not chance. Therefore, it is not the same as discriminating against someone of another "skin color". That would be deemed "racist", and a tattoo does not signify a race.Do you think it's fair that some places exclude tattooed individuals from their list of prospective employees? I don't. It seems like they're putting people off because they have a different colored skin.

So what your sayin is that if you have ink or body piercings you can't be professional ? That's F$&ked up ! Or because I have a leg brace I'm looked at as disabled ? I've actually dropped my tools on the floor, because the customer told me that I should be disabled , my response was then have someone else fix your car I'm obviously not good enough to . Their response was," but your the best tech I kno" that's how screwed up people are .
