Me except i do chanukah lolI am 16 (about to turn 17 in Feb), I never got gifts of any kind except on Christmas and my birthday. I hardly ever got candy outside of Easter and Halloween. Am I the only one my age who was like this????
I get candy/gifts from my own money from raking, snow shoveling and baby sitting -

Shouldn't it be 'parents these days' ? If I was a kid and got offered the choice of a gift or to work for that gift .... or an iPad or a colouring book ...
Don't blame the kids, they're being built this way. However I do believe in medals for participation in younger grades, it encourages activity. Motivated kids always will be and will strive no matter what.

It's not all kids that are ungrateful. I doubt a kid in Kenya would be ungrateful if you gave him even a scoop of rice or medicine. It's an American thing. I'm a teen and nothing was ever "handed" to me I work for what I want and deal with my problems unlike some other teens.

Do they have doors in trailers???😜My generation has to have the most kids that blatantly just don't give a care. We do what we want. Regardless of the consequences. I tell a teacher to screw off. What's the worse they can do? Write me up? Yell back at me? Send me home? That's the mentality of kids nowadays. We're like this because you adults aren't hard enough on us. You buy us anything we want. Do pretty much anything we ask of you. You let us run all over you. To most kids my age, respect is just a seven letter word. We say yes sir and no sir, but we only do it to get our way. So! Parents, respectfully, it's your fault. 😁
Bring the belts back out. Smash that phone with a hammer. Cut that tv cord. Hide the car keys. Hell, take the bedroom door off the hinges. I know I'd be pissed if my mom took my bedroom door away.
Happy Turfin' 👍👍👍

You sound like you were raised like me. Correctly.Kids today are too sensitive and are told how perfect and amazing they are at everything they do.
There are now sports where every kid gets a trophy just for participating. Whatever happened to being competitive and feeling like second place was first loser?
Newsflash!!!
Some of you reading this that are under the age of 16 will and probably do suck at something whether it's academic, professional, or social. You aren't as special as you think and the world is a mean, cruel place that will kick you in the teeth every chance it gets.
Get over it. ✊

I hate to see what society will be like when this spoiled generation grows up.

Some of you guys are going way overboard. I agree, a lot of kids are like this. But some still aren't. A few of you had said that every kid is basically a spoiled brat (paraphrased). That simply isn't true. Like Ojibwe said, look for the good. Mason is right though. We are softening up almost too much. I'd like to think that i was raised the right way, and I have my parents to thank for that

Pardon me, but I was on topic. As I am reading this thread, I looked up and out the window I see two self entitled little jerks walking across my yard. The sidewalk was a mere 10feet away!! Of course I yelled "get off my lawn" but they couldn't hear me because of their iPhone headphones. So I posted in here hoping to get their attention. Mind your own beeswax Picasso and quit hijacking masons thread!😜༺☣ℳཞ71ᏤཡℬüᎦ☣༻ wrote:

It's nice and innocent at that age, but as you grow up and get older, they become participation trophies. You showed up, you're a winner. Which is true as opposed to doing nothing, but if you play competitively, there is nothing you want less than a participation trophy.💀༄्ཧ़ཀंེབ།༨ཛყ༄💀 wrote:

@wegsies . I made the point in my earlier post that it should be for the younger grades. Encouragement awards. Skilled kids will enjoy sport regardless and will continue simply because they are good at it.
My other point on this thread is don't blame the kids, they don't make the rules. It's the adults who do it all ..... parents these days!

We should start giving our little kiddies gold medals that are encrusted with diamonds! Spoil them some more! That's the way to do it. If the kid gets upset because he got a participation trophy then i don't think he deserves an award at all. A trophy is a trophy. An award is an award. Take it or leave it.

If you play to be competitive, it's just a reminder of a loss. I'm looking at my 2nd place state trophy from last year for baseball right now. There were 50 something teams, but we still got 2nd. My team got killed in the championship. That game wasn't a great memory, and my trophy reminds me of that every time I look at it. I'm not saying they should stop giving out 2nd place trophies. I'm just saying that that's generally the effect that participation trophies have on people who play to winWe should start giving our little kiddies gold medals that are encrusted with diamonds! Then don't be such a sore loser. At least you got a trophy. What about the team that placed last? You think they felt like crap? Come on.

state level competition is a completely different ball game. At that level everyone in the team is there based on skill and their own want. Even then, like the Olympics, the top 3 are always recognised achievements. If you feel that second place is the first loser then that is a personal thing and completely up to you. When you can have a tenth of a second between first and second I think that is a little harsh – at an elite level second place is still a remarkable achievement. The real sportsman will accept it and continue to strive for better. I’m certainly not an elite sportsman, I did play competitive tennis … sometimes you can just have the wrong bad day.

You could've been the star player of your league. It doesn't matter. I'm sure you played your ass off to get there. Be proud that you at least got to where you did and dont be upset over 2nd place. You could've been on 3rd, 4th or even 50th.TrailerTrash wrote:

“I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly...impatient of restraint.” Hesiod, 8th Century BC
