Today while reading a Cracked article, I discovered the sleeping style called the Uberman sleep schedule. The basic idea is to maximize waking hours by only getting REM sleep. In short, once accomplished, you only have to sleep 2-3 hours daily. Since I am naturally impulsive and don't have much to do until school starts up in 3 weeks, I figured that I would give it a try.
-
The method is to take 6 20-30 minute naps every 4 hours in the day. Sadly for me, it takes 1 week to become fully adjusted to the schedule, and in the meantime you are basicly sleep depriving yourself. So, my idea is this. While I'm adjusting to the schedule, I am going to post every 2 hours how I am doing and what I am thinking. I figure after 24 hours this will get pretty entertaining. I already have a "creative" mind, so this could only enhance it.
The main problem I'll have is filling 22 hours of waking hours, so I'll be teaching myself statistics, exercising, reading, helping finish painting a room, and other stuff. Sadly I can't punch because my computer isn't hooked up to the Internet.
Anyways, I'll be starting at 12:00 am central time, and Ill take my first nap at 2:00 am then take on every 4 hours.
Any words of encouragement, or negativity are welcome. If at any point I feel I'm in any danger, I'll stop it, so you don't need to worry there. -
Good luck👍
My work schedule and life too undetermined to do this, plus I like sleep too much. -
I have a feeling your 22 hours awake are going to be a complete daze and when you give this up you will sleep for 14 straight hours. I think humans sleep the way they do not because of some social norm, but because we are biologically predisposed to do so.
But good luck to you! Sounds like a cool little adventure.

This is really ironic, because this last month I've been training my mind and body to need as little sleep as possible. Right now ive gotten down to only needing around 4 hours to feel like I got a full 10 hours. It's amazing what you can bend your mind to accept.

Damn, if this works I'm next

The thing is if you have a place to be for more than 4 hours(school, work, etc.) Im not sure this would be practical lol. But, if you work at home or you are a freelancer this could be good.Damn, if this works I'm next

Kramer tried this in Seinfeld.
If I remember right author farley mowat also did this after observing wolves. Or no, I remember now he took 20 min naps for 8 hours or so. But the key was to get up and do a circle then lay back down to sleep for the next 20 mins.

0 Hours:
For some reasons the effects of this experiment have yet to affect me. My thoughts are relatively normal for me. I'm thinking this will be a relatively easy experiment. This may be due to the fact that I have just begun, but that fact seems negligible.

Einstein actually slept between 14-18 hours a day, if my memory serves me correctly. I'm too lazy to google it.

This is random, but...you read Cracked to! Awesome site.

This sounds very interesting best of luck to you bean I hope it works out for ya.

Well, I'm about to try my first power nap. I have 3 alarms set on my phone. Hopefully they work.
-
Hour 2:
My first nap was a failure. I got at most 5 minutes of sleep, meaning that I will not have 15 precious minutes of the 2 hrs I am allotted. When the alarm went off I was... disappointed.
I feel tired but not overly tired. That will change soon though I'm sure. -
This is rather interesting if It works will u give me instructions on how to do this?
-
Hour 4:
I'm feeling drowsy so far. Again, this isn't terrible drowsiness, but then again I've stayed up for 52 hours straight before. This leads me to believe that all my hours of staying up late has been training me for this moment. It's like the knockout scene in Rocky, but instead of me punching meat to culminate in a knockout, it's me staying up with friends culminating in sleep depriving myself for a week for absolutely no damn reason. I'm like depriving ninja. Then again, I could just be getting cocky, but I digress.
My plan thus far for keeping awake has been watching Carrie and I know what you did last summer. I can't get the stupid "they're all gonna laugh at you" part out of my head.
Well, that's it for hour 4. Hopefully my second scheduled nap at 6 is more successful than the first.
@Alpha, sure, but I won't know if it's successful until a week from now. -
Hour 6
Got my 20 minutes worth thankfully. No dreams sadly(this is an after effect of not reaching REM sleep). I woke up feeling refreshed but not satisfyingly so. It's akin to scratching an itch for a few seconds, feeling the relief and then it comes back.
I've realized I'm a vengeful person as well. Yesterday, my dog decided to wake me up at 2 hour intervals to go outside. So today, I have been waking my dog up every 17 minutes or so because that's the equivalent in dog-time.
Note: Side effect of Uberman method, dog very irritable. -
Lol😂😂 this is gonna be good, best of luck to you
-
Hour 8:
I've taken to pacing for now. That is all. -
This is already one of the most interesting threads I've come across in GD. Bean, you're a great wordsmith and storyteller, I'm glad it's you embarking on this ride.
-
Hour 10:
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to get my 20 mins. However, after 30 mins of pacing, I realized that I'm less tired than usual. That seems odd considering I've had a total of 25 mins of sleep but eh if it works don't fix it. I'm expecting the zombie hours to come soon.
Overall mood: pretty good
I'm also hungry for some reason even though I ate only 3 hours ago.
@Khal Thanks, I'm more interested in the days 3-7(that's when I read you really get tired). Also, I wonder how 22 waking hours will effect my outlook on life as a whole. -

Hour 12:
For the past 2 hours I have been doing stuff, so fatigue has yet to set in. However, I begin to notice a slight increase in my already palpable clumsiness level. Being as I'll be painting trim on a step ladder in a few short hours this may be hazardous, but very little in life isn't.
I'm looking forward to my 2 o'clock sleeping time( nap is beginning to sound... I guess babyish in my mind). I'm sort of in a rut right now. My dog has since forgiven me for the constant wake ups, but he is sleeping in a corner right now in an attempt to regain his lost hours.
Overall mood: unchanged

Hour 14:
Feeling so much better now. Slept the full 20 mins.
Mood: slightly bad due to a headache. -

Hour 14 II: I find myself in a stupor. Everything feels heavy. I have stayed up for days at a time before, but this is worse. My 20 minute man-sleeping sessions are tantalizing my tired body with cruel sleep. It's like holding a treat in front of a dog and never giving it to him, which is how I spent 10 minutes today, before ultimately giving in to my dogs devastated looks. I'm just too ballsy to do that to myself. The alarm clock is a bastard.
Overall mood: melancholy(which remarkably had nothing to do with being rotund and green). -
Alright alright alright - temporary hijack - you're going to resort to cannibalism and impregnate the 20 girls in your class in a staggered fashion to keep a "steady stream of meat flowing?". Ok... that needs to be published. I gotta find that thread on the app and bump it immediately. That thread needs to be stickied. Bean, Id like to subscribe to your newsletter.
Hijack over, on with the sleep deprivation experiment!

If you find it and bump it, I'll start posting some more stuff in it; I always have new thoughts. It's 2 months away though. And you actually picked out my favorite post in there lol. I actually had that conversation with the entire class including the teacher. I'll never forget their reactions.Alright alright alright - temporary hijack - you're going to resort to cannibalism and impregnate the 20 girls in your class in a staggered fashion to keep a "steady stream of meat flowing?".
