As a (hopefully) final post in this thread, I will quote Matty Montgomery, lead singer of For Today: "Most people do not believe Jesus is alive and powerful because most of The Church acts like He isn't."

Gay marriage is only a sin to those who believe it's a sin. We live in a country where our religious freedom is guaranteed by our constitution. Outlawing gay marriage is an infringement on that right, because it is forcing the religious views of a particular group of people on everyone who has different beliefs. You may as well outlaw premarital sex while you're at it.
Now, this guy can state his views on the subject all he wants. That's his right, and I'm ok with that. It's his funding of anti-gay organizations that I'm not ok with. It's bigotry, and I can't support that. Everyone deserves the chance to be happy, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, and homosexuality is harmless. -
What does it matter if gay marriage is legal? It's not like homosexuality is being imposed on you. I personally don't see anything wrong with gay marriage. If your gay you're gay, you were born that way. All I'm saying is everyone deserves to be happy and we live in America after all. Land of the free. I don't see why gays shouldn't be allowed to marry. It doesn't affect me if they do nor my religious views.
As for religion, give me a break the bible says you can't wear polyester. But I'm sure most people do anyways. -
To add to my previous statement: what's so bad about it? I don't understand how two men can be attracted to eachother, but only because I've never experienced it. I imagine it's no different than the attraction between a man and a woman. Is it just the fear of what we don't understand, justified by a bible verse? It's not like gay marriage could ruin the sanctity of marriage, because divorce already did that. So what's the deal? If it's legal, that doesn't mean you will be forced to marry someone of the same sex. What difference does it make to anyone who isn't gay? The whole anti-gay argument is completely moot.
-
And furthermore, Leviticus (where the bible defines homosexuality as a sin) also outlaws wearing two different kinds of thread, tattoos, working on the sabbath, and allows you to sell your wife into slavery. Why is it that people feel the need to enforce the only part of the bible that doesn't apply to them? Since when is it ok to just pick and choose what part of your religious text you live your life by, and why do you feel the need to force others to act on your specific choice of verse?

I have to say that I'm starting to lean more towards a libertarian stance on this, meaning let people do what they want. As a Christian, I do not believe feeling attracted to someone of the same sex is sin, but I do believe acting on those feelings is a sin. Still, while I can imagine Paul or Jesus telling people to turn from their sins if they lived in America today, I can't imagine them fighting for laws to prevent people from doing things, even when they consider those things to be sinful. I think they would instead love and pray for people, leaving the control of law to the government. At the same time, there are examples in the Bible where nations fell when they disobeyed God. Sin is sin though. America is full of unrepentant sinners. To my own shame, for all my faith in God, I know I'm just as much a sinner as anyone else, and much worse than some.

Rights are granted by the constitution. The constitution doesn't grant rights to the people, rather it limits the federal government's ability to infringe on the people's inalienable rights. This is precisely why DOMA (act outlawing gay marriage) has been ruled unconstitutional by every court that has reviewed it. The right to pursue happiness by consentually marrying whom you please regardless of gender is INALIENABLE, or god-given if that suits you. This is how a secular constitutionally limited representative republic works. Chick-fil-a has contributed millions of dollars to groups that attempt to subvert the constitution through insidious legislation that infringes on people's inalienable rights, simple as that. This is not something to gleefully celebrate or admire. It is something that should disgust any person who calls themselves an American, regardless of what their particular holy book says. Enjoy your chicken.

I want to ask a question in all seriousness to those who think the Bible should not dictate who we love or marry. This is not meant to be antagonistic in any way...I just want honest opinions. How do we decide, as a society, what is acceptable and what is not? Who gets to decide that? It is easy at this point to say we don't get to decide for other people, but if we really believe people don't "choose" to whom they are attracted, is that also true for adults attracted to children? Or let's say a man attracted to his adult son or daughter, since adding children into this might start too much of a firestorm. Should he be allowed to marry and have sex with his adult son or daughter if they are truly in love with one another, or would that be considered reprehensible? What about marrying multiple people? Again, be honest. If you do believe this, no judgment from me. I just want to know if most believe in absolute free love.

👆 while I do believe people with pedophilia can't help how they feel, pedophilia is wrong, because a child is easily manipulated, and is not old enough or mature enough to engage in such activities with anyone of any age, and in most cases, it is not consensual. As for incest, that is medically unsafe, because it leads to genetic defects. Polygamy, IMO, should be up to those involved.

This part isn't true for people who are homosexual though, right? -

Not nessecarily. The things people find attractive in potential mates (facial symmetry, healthy, intelligent, etc.) are all instinctually engrained in us to make sure our children are born with healthy genes. That's just the physical attraction part of it. As humans, we're also emotionally driven to find sexual partners. Someone can find all those things in another person of the same sex, but feel an emotional connection as well as a physical attraction to them that may result in love. They may also just be sexual deviants, similar to pedophilia. The key difference between homosexuality and pedophilia, though, is that homosexuality is consensual. No one gets hurt by it.Tonytlj add:TLJ wrote: ✂

So, marriage (a religious thing) is honored between man and women, in all states. What if some of us don't Beleive in that god or the books tied to it. But we have our own religion or lack thereof, but still Beleive in a common spous-type unity. And we would also like the same rights given to those who are married. Given that we can't, or campaigns are provided against it, is that religious discrimination?
For those of you who are Christian and still want the same rights, or not. I cannot speak for you.

Understood, but this is exactly why I went with the example of a man with his adult son or daughter. Pedophilia brings the age of consent into question (it used to be 12 in North Carolina at one point and is still acceptable in a number of countries, I believe).
