Texas Gov. Rick Perry isn’t having any part of President Barack Obama’s health care law.
In a letter to Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Monday, Perry pledged that he won’t create a state insurance exchange or implement the optional Medicaid expansion. “I oppose both the expansion of Medicaid as provided in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the creation of a so-called ‘state’ insurance exchange, because both represent brazen intrusions into the sovereignty of our state,” Perry said.Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0712/78236.html#ixzz20GTm81d1

Im not in the medical field but I know that some of you are. What are your thoughts on the new health care law?

It's a horrible plan and law. It raises taxes for 3 years before any payments are made. That's how they are showing it to be deficit neutral. It is creating a situation to increase insurance costs, not lower healthcare costs. There are so many extra taxes in it and it also sets up a situation to destroy health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts. Leaving all politics out of it, like the mandate, this law does nothing but increase government control, intrusion and government spending and size.

Yes but also remember everybody has free health care and 80 percent of income from insurance companies has to be spended on health care.

We had a CEO from Integris Health which is the largest healthcare system and hospital network in Oklahoma as a guest speaker at school and this question was asked to him as well .. His response was that from the hospitals financial stance its beneficial to them. In his simple terms currently they are responsible for uninsured patient services and collect nothing on these expenses which contributes to high costs to cover these services.. with this plan there is a means for them to recover portions of these types of losses meaning that overall there will be less uninsured patients that they will service which declines their overall losses. He didn't advocate or bash simply stated the benefit to hospitals from it. So as always probably won't know the nature of the beast completely until it rolls out and is in place for a few years

Largest tax increase on people getting paid less than 100k a year. And the taxes don't go to the government, it goes to the most profitable corps in the USA. BTW you get NO extra healthcare return.

I will pay the extra tax to help a sick person.

I just feel sorry that the US is one of the last developed nations to have some sort of Medicare system in place to enable those least able to afford basic medical help are able to access it. I'm not commenting on how it is being implemented just that something needs to be done. In Australia we have Medicare, in the UK the National Health System (NHS). I pay a higher tax to subsidise the Medicare. I get a rebate from the government for maintaining private health care that partially offsets the levy. This is one of those instances where this is not about me but what I can give to help those without my advantages.

It's raising the price for insurance by 40% and still not fixing the problem

I'm moving to Texas !!!!! This stupid feel good law is over the top. What's next? Making everyone have to own apple computers ? What's about lawn mowers. Regardless if you have a lawn or not or need one or not. The federal government should not force people to purchase a product!!!

Think about the costs uninsured patients incur on hospitals who won't turn them away. Many of these costs are brought on by conditions that could be prevented by simple preventive care. However, many of them can't afford this care out-of-pocket. Insurance for these individuals will both increase business for general practicians, and will negate a large amount of financial loss for major urban hospitals like Grady Memorial in Atlanta, which has been in danger of having to close despite being the only highest level trauma center in Georgia. Regardless of your convictions, this needs to be fixed.

Funny how a conservatives base argument centers around freeloaders in almost all conversations. All of the sudden they don't believe in "personal responsibility"? 😂Add TOW wrote:

It's not perfect but it's certainly a step in the right direction.

Hardly an accurate comparison. You'll just walk if you can't buy a truck. No one else is going to be paying for your transportation.OneThumbBastard wrote:

I have a feeling insurance companies will be super rich while we pay them off,in order for this to work we would have to get rid of these health insurance companies and go with one system

I did not intend to create a debate with this, just gain understanding.
A few of you know but I have not made it public. Last week, my 88 year old grandmother was found faced down at the nursing home. She apparently fell and broke her hip. My wife has extensive scar tissue on her uterus and was in and out of the hospital for pain as well as cysts(sp) on her ovaries. We also fear that she may have some gall bladder and/or liver problems. And then...her grandfather was hospitalized and put into a medically induced coma due to a blood clot reaching his heart causing a heart attack and possible stroke (we are still not sure how bad it is). While in the hospital, he had another blood clot travel to his leg. EVERYTHING occurred literally within 24 hours.
We all have insurance but when we asked the hospital about this bill, they simply did not know how they would be effected yet.

Medicare, Medicaid and social security are trillions in debt, but let's just follow the pied piper off the cliff.

Also, to comment on the OP- this is my take.
Rick Perry is a moron. Who would jeopardize the health of his constituents just to make a political power play?
