I was homeschooled, from the beginning through to almost the end of year 10. At that age, I stopped doing schoolwork, and began travelling to work every day with dad for several months.Although public schools in Americaare sketchy, the home schooling is worse. The chance that you will find a family that makes highly educated kids with no biased opinions docterining the teaching is rare. Public is the best of the worst
The next year, I went to a local school and studied year 11 General Math, General English, Legal Studies and Information Technology. I found all of the classes to be disorganised and the Math and IT teacher was absolutely pathetic. Withthe exception of Legal Studies, I didn't learn a thing that year. I never did homework, and I rarely did classwork for myself. I spent the majority of my time either drawing, or helping others with their work.
I passed year 11 with 100%To be continued...

The social aspect depends on each kid, kids can get enough socialization through sports ect... I think home schooling is fine because mostly you guys are saying home schooling is bad because of the creation issue, people have the right to believe in what they want so if the parent wants to teach the child creationism or not. ( I've been homeschooled and then went to public school and had no social issues)

The thing is, my youngers sister skipped year 9: going from year 8 homeschool straight to year 11, with similar or the same classes as me, and she also passed 100%
Whilst I was studying year 11, I was also holding down a part-time (two days per week) job in an architectural office. At the age of 16, I did a week of work experience and they offered me a job, based on attitude, my knowledge of the architectural computer programs, and my experience in the building trade.
I held that job for two years, and I regularly point out houses to friends and tell them with 100% honesty,
"I drew the house plans for tht house."I've been around drugs, but never taken them.
I smoke, mildly heavily.
I drink on the odd occasion.
I have more friends than I can keep up with.
I've been to University for several months, and quit to pursue a different career.
I'm now in the process of beginning a construction business with my best friend. I'm almost 20 years old.
To be continued ...

Tell me: do I sound like your closed minded, stereotypical homeschooled young man?
I put it to you: public schooled children and adults are incredibly closed minded when it comes to religeon and scientific 'facts' such as evolution.
I've studied evolution. I've studied my religion, and I've questioned both deeply. All my current beliefs are based on logic, science and history. -
Who can tell a parent how to screw there kid up. Home schoolcan be good. There is a lot to say about p. School. Who knows how there kid will do. Love them pray that they will make it in the real world.

Meh. Let parents do what they think is best, even if it's not always left-leaning, atheist, or up to some other non-parent's standards. The state or locality can offer guidelines to help, and they do.
At least these parents are taking control of their parental responsibilities, and not ignoring their kid's educational development like many parents do.
And, yes... I have kids. And their mother is a national board certified public school teacher of 15 years in a very wealthy county. (and a lefty by training.) I've been deep in those trenches, and public school at best is merely adequate. I've spoken in front of the board of education, and fought the political goals of my kid's principals, and won.
Let the parents, who actually love their kids, make choices that benefit the child. For every kid that home schooling messes up, there are hundreds that public schools leave behind every day.
For most kids, public school may be the best option. For many, it absolutely isn't.

Continued on from my three posts above, (I haven't read them again: I'm on page 4 of this thread) my younger sister studied Latin for several years. She could translate writings by Julius Ceasar (and did so). The entire family (six children) was given the chance to study music and learn any instruments they wished. My parents have a small hobby farm, where we rode motorbikes, and had friends over on a regular basis with their motorbikes and 4X4 dune buggies.
I'm going to shut up: I can't describe my childhood any better than I have, and now I just sound like I'm ranting. Which I'm not. I'm just trying to make a point.
Now that I have experienced the real world for over a year, including living in the Big Smoke for several months early in 2011, I look back on my early childhood and thank my stars I had as brilliantly intelligent and loving parents as I did.

TBH, as a parent you still have a responsibility for your kid's education even if they're going to public school. I went to public school but when I was at home and homework was done (first thing, in the kitchen, and checked by one of my parents 😱) they augmented. We read aloud and privately almost daily. Played sports. Studied technology. Did experiments, etc. Oh, and we had chores to do. We had time to chill out and a truly great life, but seriously we chilled out by doing most of this stuff. And if our work wasn't up to par? We got to do it again even if it was acceptable for school. There was a rigor and level of expectation that I rarely see any more.

I just like the fear of homophobia and racism being spread to kids if they are home schooled. I knew plenty of racist homophobic kids in public school. They were probably that way because of their parents. Regardless of where a child is between 7 and 3 their parent will make them as tolerant or intolerant as he or she wishes.

Ok. Time for my final thoughts. While I don't agree with many of the reasons that homeschooling is done there are many situations where it can actually be preferable. And no matter how much I'd like it to stop because of its abuse in augmenting certain beliefs we can't give the state total power over us and our children.
