I recently read an article of news that reported on a recent survey done that says only 51% of people over the age of 18 are married compared to in the 1960's the number was well over 70%. With this decline soon the married couples are going to be the minority, why do you think this change is.

I think these generations talk openly about life issues. (for example) Gone are the days when abused women and children are looked down upon for speaking out. We accept more freely that each individual has a path to walk. This leads to time spent discovering ourselves more. Taking time to be sure we're ready to really cling to someone no matter what has become important. At least I hope that is part of the reason. That or video games. ;)

Emancipation of women. In the 60s and before, the only path a woman had for financial security was to marry, or struggle financially all her life. She had to put up with abuse from her husband because the alternative was destitution. Now that women are more financially capable of supporting themselves, they are no longer forced into marriage, so it has become a choice rather than a necessity. Plus the stigma of illegitimate children has been removed.

Yep. BBan has a really important point, and well said at that.

This sums up nicely! 👍 the conception to the fruitition of feminism brought changes across the civilised world. So many little changes bring massive social change. Statistics like these never really account for these changes in social mentality, they are simply a tool to show the differences of 'now and then'. Where will society behaviour take us in the future? Who knows, but there will always be a body dedicated to showing us stats to show the difference! 👍Feminism.

All very good and valid points. I think that this generations attitude toward morality is vastly different from the attitude of the 50's and 60's as well. In that time morality was for the most part king and people held true the values of their forefathers. Today, there is a totally different mind set. This generation seems to be ruled by self gratification and lifestyles that are polar opposite to the traditional marriage vows. Another statistic that supports this statement is that better than 50% of marriages today end in divorce.

Marriage is just a metal band round your finger and a piece of paper.... Not to mention alot of law and court cases when it goes tits up

Lol. I'm sure that's a true statement. I've been married for almost twenty years and to be honest, there have been times when i've asked myself "is this really worth it"? It's in those times when my commitment to my marriage is tested. I'm very happy to say that in every instance, I was able to answer "yes, my marriage is worth everything to me". I'm happier and more in love with my wife now than I ever have been. I know that sometimes divorce is the only option. My point is that We can't be too hasty to throw in the towel at the first sign of trouble.

I think the mentality of people now is not, "I'm greatful for what I have" but "what can I get that's better?" you see this with anything in life, jobs, cars, houses for example. Unfortunatly people now see marriage the same way.Lol. I'm sure that's a true statement. I think that doesn't help, marriage costs, a lot, the UK at least there are no longer any TAX breaks for it, and divorce is also costly and very easy.Marriage is just a metal band round your finger and a piece of paper.... Not to mention alot of law and court cases when it goes tits up

Completely agree with you on that! If we prefer our spouses needs over our own, and that sentiment is reciprocated then it shouldn't ever be a chore.ℬeƖƖɑIƗɑƖiɑɳɑ wrote:

No it's not marriage is a commitment to another human being to be there for them for the rest of your life in love, if you don't think it will work out don't get married. That's a sour way to look at it to think it will automatically always fuck up.Marriage is just a metal band round your finger and a piece of paper.... What is the current divorce rate?
-
That depends on which poll you reference. Most will put the divorce rate at around 50%. If you want to look at the top 20 countries in terms of the divorce rate, go to www.divorce.com. I believe Belarus was first at 68%, the UK was 10th at 52% and the US was 12th at 49%.

I have a lot of opinions on this. I instantly answered feminism ruined it because there is not really any roles anymore. Equality.. Meh, women still get paid less. But honestly what is so wrong with wanting to stay home and take care of a family? Now kids are brought up by other people and electronics. It's lost the value of family. Also, it's said chivalry is dead. Men are still good out there but now it seems men are more feminine than females. Not saying that everyone should not be treated equally but the allure and family values is just somehow lost. Now if I'm trying to find a man, they seem more needy than me. It's odd.
