Is joining the us air force a good idea
Forums › General Discussion › Is joining the us air force a good idea-
I want to be a civil engineer officer for the USA air force but I what's the minimum time you have to be in before you can get out ? Any vets here who can help
-
For officers it all depends on how much of uncle sams money you take. A good friend of mine has the AF paying all his tuition and some pretty decent perks, needless to say he has a long contract. First things first, you need to talk to an officer selection officer, get some straight answers. Heres the thing to consider, officers in all services are on the chopping block with the downsizing. Make sure you do it for the right reasons, if you just want a paycheck go elsewhere, if you want to serve your country then it can be very rewarding, its all abou what your looking for

I want a paycheck and to serve but I don't want to regret it and not be able to get out
-
Read your contract VERY carefully before signing it. A lot of recruiters make promises just to get you to sign and then you're screwed. And joining for a paycheck is the wrong reason to join.

I'm an AF vet & I agree, DO NOT join 4 the $$$. Ur eithr gung-ho or ur not. It really doesn't mattr which branch u join eithr. I'm an entrepreneur & being told what 2 do & whn 2 do it doesn't fit my personality. I STAYED in troubl!!! After numerous Article 15s I got out aftr 4 yrs & startd my own bzness. The rest is HISTORY! 👍😝👍😜👍 I support out troops 110% but it just wasn't 4 me. @ least I tried. Just make sure ur really up 4 it. It could b the best decision u evr made...or the worse.Read your contract VERY carefully before signing it. A lot of recruiters make promises just to get you to sign and then you're screwed. Generally 4 years, 10-12 if you want to be a pilot though.

Good advice from Sadaan704. That's the real deal right there...

I agree with sofresh, theres not a whole lot more manly than punching grizzly bears in the mouth for just looking at you. But from what you said, it seems as though you prolly shouldnt join, especially not as an officer, which is fine. Doing the reserves might not be a bad idea, get a taste of it.Join the Marines! my boyfriend was airforce. to me it seemed like the best and worst time of his life. he learned plenty of discapline and i'm very proud of him but i dnt believe it was worth the things he suffered in his home life.

Its called service for a reason, its not fun all the time. Joining the military is the same as gettin married or any other occassion where you swear an oath before god. All these obligations conflict at times, but they are all equal in terms of importance, it will be up to you to balance it. When take the oath before god, your ass belongs to the military, just like when you take the oath during your wedding, your ass belongs to your wife, gotta make em both work.my boyfriend was airforce. to me it seemed like the best and worst time of his life. he learned plenty of discapline and i'm very proud of him but i dnt believe it was worth the things he suffered in his home life.

his mom was diagnosed with cancer while he was in basic training. stuff snowballed from there and he couldnt help at all, since he was pretty much everywhere but home for the next 6-7 years. it changed him.
what i learned from his experience is that when you join the military you sacrifice more than just your life/health. and if you arent prepared to handle that, dont join. -
I agree completely, that was my point of its called service for a reason statement.
I would however argue the spouse gives more of a shit than uncle sam statement but thats a whole other thread in the making. But for Mr Mean, yeah timing always sucks and its always incredibly easy to blame the military for your problems when things arent working out, and if you want to be an officer you need to have the maturity to be the one to make tough calls like irridescent mentioned. Mission accomplishment always comes first. -
once you sign the dotted line and swear in you cant change it, no matter how bad stuff gets. once you're a soldier, or an airman, or a sailor, or whatever, that becomes a big piece of who you are.
-
I will say though that as far as quality of life in each service goes, the Air Force in some areas is not too far off of civilian employment in terms of rigor and stress, so id keep that in mind while you think it through

LISTEN TO THIS the only and I mean only way to be an officer in the air force is the air force academy it is harder than any ROTC program there is but u get a couple things u wint get anywhere else. FREE tuition. Warm showers. And good meals. All the rest is hell. U have a commitment of 5-8 years for an engineering degree. Longer for a pilot. Once u get out private sector companies will be fighting over u.

all you need to know is that your life is in danger.

From your last 2 statements it sounds like it might not be a good fit for you.

MrMean. Dont do it. If you have doubts, dont do it. You gotta know that you want it. Once you are in, people will rely on you. You cant be half stepping. Finish college and give the real world a try. The US military is the biggest and baddest fraternity/sorority. It is also not for everybody.

1) You don't like commitment, but it requires commitment.
2) You can't expect a guarantee that you will never have to kill anyone if you join any branch of the military. You are expected to serve in whatever capacity & wherever they need you.
