Goes to Cliff Burton.
There just never was or will be an equal to his greatness.

Even Metallica said les claypoOl was better and far too good for them. So les takes the prize

Video proof for the win.

I will wait for a proper rebuttal.

Victor Wooten... Don't even attempt to argue that one

Cliff and les cannot be compared. They are/were both amazing. One is a slap genius. The other is a metal legend. They had/have diff styles. The only way this argument could have been settled would be if lars had drawn that fateful shortest straw.

We all know cliff was good. But cmon. Ever heard of Jaco Pastorius?

First video on youtube, seriously, when you have that much talent and skill, he clearly knows every sound that instrument can make and how to make em, best bassist of all time material

Watched it. I enjoyed it, but it just didn't impress me as much as the cliff video I posted. I'm sure that it all just comes down to the different styles though. Also, Jake Shimabukuro is a better ukulele player than all these bassists combined are bass players. Just saying. YouTube him, while my guitar gently weeps.First video on youtube, seriously, when you have that much talent and skill, he clearly knows every sound that instrument can make and how to make em, best bassist of all time material

Sorry I don't follow fishing so I don't know who is the best bassist.

I would agree with you, but after Jaco's death, Stanley Clarke has consistently been a supreme bassist. I also consider Sting to be a great bassist in his own right. We all know cliff was good. But cmon. Ever heard of Jaco Pastorius?

Cliff Burton died too young with a great talent, I'm sure that had he not died, he'd have developed his talent over the 25 years since '86 into something great in today's standards.

I can't believe no ones mentioned Billy Sheehan
Look him up on YouTube, I'm honestly not sure if he is human. -

Agreed. In addition Stanley Clarke was one of Cliff's biggest idols. Robo is correct. You can't compare the two. Let it go BYÓU wrote:

I think it would be unfair to not mention Kai Eckhardt in this thread. He's not as well known as most of the fine players that have been mentioned above, but if you have not heard of him then you should definitely check him out. Another of my obscure faves is Oteil Burbridge (Col. Bruce Hampton and the Rescue Unit and the Allman Brothers). He plays very technical bass lines but somehow is able to scat-sing on top of it. Awesome! 👍

Depending on what category of music we're talking about, I would say as far as fusion jazz/Contemporary, I like Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. Funk would be Rick James and Larry Graham. Pop/Rock, I like Sting and Mark King (Level 42) and Mainstream Jazz I like Charlie Mingus and Ron Carter.
