Best bassist of all time?
Forums › General Discussion › Best bassist of all time?-
I never saw Geddy Lee from the band Rush mentioned.

I'll put it like this. Les claypool could play anything that cliff could, doesn't work the other way around.. Cliff wouldn't have kept up. They were and are the best respectively.

Let me say it again, Tony Levin.

5 Time Grammy Award Winner: Mr Victor Wooten

Geddy Lee wins no doubt about it

That doesn't always define what music fans hear everyday. Victor is an excellent bass player in his own right, and his accomplishments are duly noted, but when it comes down to versatility, listen to the "School Days" cd by Stanley Clarke or any of his music in the 70's or 80's era, and listen to the range from jazz to rock that he puts down in his music. No comparison!5 Time Grammy Award Winner: Mr Victor Wooten

I think the answer has been given. There is no best bassist. There are good bassists and there are opinions to who's better. For example you will have a hard time convincing me cliff is the best as he's from a band I purely despise.

Andrew Weiss, from Ween and Rollins Band. 👍

Mingus... Forgot about him. 👍👍👍Depending on what category of music we're talking about, I would say as far as fusion jazz/Contemporary, I like Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke. Funk would be Rick James and Larry Graham. Pop/Rock, I like Sting and Mark King (Level 42) and Mainstream Jazz I like Charlie Mingus and Ron Carter.
But in all reality, the worlds greatest bass player could be living right next door to you and you wont even know it because he never got any recognition or did anything with his talent...
Its like asking people what the best flavor ice cream in the world is. Everyone has theyre own fav. -

There just never was or will be an equal to his greatness.

My vote goes to the prize winner (early album he was on) Ray Brown—jazz giant. Pastorious, Wooten, and Clark owe him much. I have listened to all the mentioned bassists and many more. The sweet Brown sound keeps me coming back. Bonus is the guy is a straight up professional and approached his work like that. Agreed that for rock it is hands down Lee from Rush. I think the teen with Jeff Beck is amazing though.
I also like the Missouri boy Charlie Haden. Go Card's!

I think Keith Brammer from Die Kreuzen deserves an honorable mention as well, not bad for a 16 year old kid in the early '80s
