What "life skills" are absolutely necessary?
Forums › General Discussion › What "life skills" are absolutely necessary?-
Since we have a variety of ages playing this game I would like to hear from all of you. I teach high school biology, but really consider myself a third "parent" to some kids. What are the skills any successful person possesses, regardless of education?

Respect
-
Here are mine:
1. Self motivation. No one becomes successful when everything is given or provided for them.
2. Communication, both written and verbal.
3. Likes to work hard -

Most definitely. A lot of today's youth, lacks respect. So to try and teach them a little will go far.Respect

What does respect look like? Teenagers are notorious for disrespect despite what parents and teachers do...and lots of successful people are very disrespectful to others. Have you seen how some rich people treat their waiters/waitresses?
-
Successful people I need to hear from you ;)

Respect is the outcome, something has to go in for respect to be achieved. It's not handed on a plate it's earned. Self discipline and motivation from surrounding persons is a step closer to that.
-
I teach as well. I believe the answer is that they need to know how to think. I don't mean simply using their brain. I am referring to problem solving and using common sense.

Humility
Patience
Acceptance of othersSpelling ability isn't on the too of the list.😜

I blame parents, teachers (no offense Fish), and society in general for this. The key to respect is sharing it mutually. If you treat children and teenagers like they are people and not personal property, mutual respect will be instilled naturally. Unfortunately it's uncommon. What does respect look like? Anyway, respect is a skill to me because you have to learn to be respectful. Learning to be respectful is sometimes difficult. It took me 10 days at camp pendelton to learn how to respect. A program called devil pups. If your in California, I recommend recommending it to your students. -
I'm not saying that respect isn't important. I'm saying that it's so uncommon that it's essentially unnecessary to life success. I see disrespect jerks everyday!! And they're the ones that drive luxury cars. I want to know what makes anyone successful after school that they may learn in school?
-
Shrewd people are often successful in their coming years. I agree with fish that respect is not always the key to success, in fact, I'd guarantee you have to be disrespectful at some point to make it big time. You don't find success without stepping on toes. Mostly I think it comes down to up-bringing and discipline from an early age. Where is the first place you learn...at home, If you're left to teach yourself you won't learn the easy way.

Having an UNWAVERING CONFIDENCE, is a must! Especially in this world were so many people try & tare others down!
Another skill I think that's necessary is to not get too high with the highs(successes/triumphs/positives)
or too low wit the lows(failures/negativity)...confidence & humility play a big role in this! -

That's what having a level head means lol. Balancing both the pros and cons and deciding based on those 2 aspects combined.Darth Vadan™ wrote:

Spelling is very important!!!!

So basically you have to steel oneself to not become a, for the lack of a better word, pussified person

Depends on your life.

Is sucess driving in a luxury car?
Im sorry, but to me that seems A bit shallow.
In my mind "successful" doesen't mean disrespectful bastard with nice carsThen again, what do I know?

Good problem solving skills. School seems boring with all the memorization and such but at least that teaches you that yes, there is a way to solve a problem later in life...years after you forgot the exact equation or proof. Then the key second skill is being persistent enough to solve complex problems. Get good at those two skills and you won't have to worry about the third most important skill: being good at job interviews :)
I disagree with marvlas in one aspect...enjoy and strive for the highs in life, but I agree, learn how not to worry about the lows. For some people the latter will take a lifetime to accomplish, unfortunately.

Common sense, good work ethic, and using your brain (don't have to be a genius but use what brain power you have).
Respect should be earned. I never give anyone respect right away. I will be courteous until I get a read on them but if someone is disrespectful to me then they should not expect me to be anything more than the bare minimum of civil to them.
