Haven't had an SLR yet and have always wanted one. So now that less cash will go into tw it's time. Looking at a range between $400 and $700. Cheaper the better but I want something new and decent.

Check out some reviews. Actually go and play with a few of your favorites to see how they feel. Canon and Nikon are both good brands. Personal preference.📷

I use a Canon Eos500d MKII if it's yor first slr got to some review sites, a good camera shop will let u try out different slr's and lenses, have fun there is alot to learn.

I myself prefer the d3100 but it I personal preference. The canon t3i (roughly $900) is amazing tho.

Panasonic lumix is the way forward. Canon make their cameras take only canon lenses and the panasonic range of lenses is perfect for amateurs and some of the features of the camera really help you take great shots. The panasonic 'pancake' lens is a great all rounder.
Also panasonic will take any lens on the market which is where your money will be going long term.

SLR is fun but bulk means it is not really practical as an everyday camera. Canon over Nikon for me because Nikon does not do RAW format. Consider Canon S95, best compact not SLR and compact means you use it everyday and do not scare people when you take it out
-
B, BugsBunny and Brown Note are both pro photogs. My suggestion would be to get in touch with one of them or another highly knowledgeable person. This is a serious investment and the more info you can get the better your decision will be.

You could put Brown Note behind a disposable camera and he'd turn out brilliant work. We are both Canon shooters. Not going to do the Nikon and Canon debate. Their both just as good as the other. Sticking with these 2 will open you to an array of used lenses. Focus on the glass. I wouldn't trade my 5D, but my good glass produces darn good images on my Rebel XT I started out with.B, BugsBunny and Brown Note are both pro photogs. I shoot Nikon, but in all honesty, both Nikon and Cannon produce great results, and they both make good lenses, with a wide varity to upgrade to later. I wouldn't stray from them.
You mentioned a d3100. As I mentioned to you in pal, not a bad choice to begin with. I actucally helped a friend pick his first DSLR and he got that one. I got to play with it a bit, and show him some things, and I was pleased with the results.
Good luck.

Might be worth looking at the Sony SLT a55. I do a lot of photography with older Sony cameras (with good lens) but a friend has had excellent success with the a55. It let's you use your old collection of camera lenses and does an incredible job of closeup outdoor work (flowers and such). He plastered my wifes hospital room with massive blowups of wildflowers and such and we and the nurses had something to stare at besides bare walls for weeks on end :)

Thinking of maybe the nikon d3000. Being a year old I can easily find the kit for $450. I want the 3100 but I here of firmware trouble on auto iso. May not prove an issue as it means to just set the iso. But that fact males me unsure
-
If you plan to do video, the 3100 will auto focus in video mode while the 3000 will not.

Video isn't an issue with me. Neither are the extra mega pixels. I've yet to do anything bigger than 8 by 10 or the occasional 8.5 by 11 on a standard printer and that's rare with me. Like I said it's the auto iso issue that bugs me. I don't mind setting iso but it's nice for auto iso to work properly on the flyIf you plan to do video, the 3100 will auto focus in video mode while the 3000 will not.

Another choice is the canon rebel xs. But what I don't like there is only 7 point auto focus. Then again one reason I wanted a SLR was for the manual focus so that may not be an issue with me. All in all in my search I haven't found the perfect model in my range as of yet. Maybe I'll wait to see what comes or maybe save for a slightly better model.

Nikon is the way to go. I don't know where you live but look out for camera shows. You can get deals there. Also in Canada Henrys camera store offers classes that will show you how to use your new camera check with your local stores.

I own a d3000 and it's nice. Great entry level camera. A good learning camera. Plus, at about $500, it's not a bad price either. I wish I had a 3100, but for what I use it for, the 3000 gets the job done

Don't get brainwashed with the Cannon v Nikon debate, keep your options open, there some other great camera makes out there, read reviews, get to the shop and try them.

Canon for the win. I love my eos 40D

Canon vs. Nikon doesn't matter until you want exotic lenses. Then Canon only slightly edges out Nikon.
AF points... You only need one. Any model will do.
A used Canon 40D with a 35 f/2 is quite economical to start with, and produces excellent results. Swap out the focus screen for precision manual focus.
Nail the sucker down on manual for a few months, and use the "zone system" for metering. (Like Ansel Adams taught, except concentrate on the highlight end)
Once you get that, the rest is your eye.

All taken with even bigger pieces of shit than the S95.
