A question for America😺
Forums › General Discussion › A question for America😺-
In November my friend is cycling across America for charity. On his own. No back up. (for terminally Ill Children). Now. My question. Will he be better off armed? If so. What's the Law for a UK citizen in regards to firearms? He has never fired a gun in his life.
-
It's a long ride of course he will be better off with arms 💪
-
Surely it depends upon the state? And a licence is still required?

well it all depends what kind of areas that he rides in. As long as you stay out the ghettos it's all good. And btw don't piss anybody off:)

I really don't know TBH. He's under the impression you can pop in Wal-Mart and just buy a hand gun. The UK gun laws are very different!Surely it depends upon the state? And a licence is still required?

If he rides through any of my turf he better be armed 😏
-
He needs to investigate the route he taking. Each state has differ laws about guns and knives. For example in Los Angeles you can carry a knife as long as it is not concealed. But in new York, neither is allowed at all.
-
My advice: probably. But refer to Grane's post first. He should also learn how to fire a gun just in case.
-
By himself? There are some pretty desolate areas with some pretty unfriendly weather. He might want to reconsider his solo journey and that might also help with this gun question.
-
After some good advice I think giving a Brit a Hand gun is not wise. Letting TV stations, etc know his route would be better! He's starting in Cal and going to Florida. Any good advice Is still welcome everyone👍

Honestly, unless ge buys a gun illegally then the answer is no. You have to be a citizen to buy, pass background check etc. I'd suggest he carry a knife though. You never know.

Am I the only one whose like...seriously? I'm Canadian so I may be wrong. But you can't just walk into a walmart and buy a gun. You're not just going to get shot. Unless he's a moron that rides into the wrong part of town and lips off for no reason anyway. Like us this question for real for real? Or half joking? Frankly given the recent events as someone not from either country I'd feel better walking down the street in the USA over the uk. I seen those riots you lot are fucked up.

I grew up in Germany and I have dual citizenship for US and Germany. I can tell you, unless he's a police officer, in which he needs paperwork filed beforehand, he can't carry a firearm ( non-resident of US). My advise would be to give details of his trip to local police and use GPS (google latitude is free and you can set waypoints, updates real fast). Have somebody watch his progress.

I agree with bigbk. Just don't ride through the wrong part of the big cities and you'll be fine. No need for a gun

No need for a gun. Whatcha think we're a buncha gun toting hillbillies and thugs?!

This shows states that allow Louisiana citizens with permit to carry concealed. Considerably mor complicated if not a US citizen. May consider a knife if feels the need to carry a weapon. Most states I know of allow a 3 or 4 inch folding blade to be concealed.

he should carry a knife. only because they are useful tools for everything and can also be used for self defense if necessary. also, should he be caught with a concealed knife, they probably won't charge or deport him.

Well, you can always ditch that sissy bike, for one of THESE: http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/,37,/34092/FV_432_MK_2.htm

There has been many folks that do this cross country thing for awareness/charity, best bet is to find their websites and contact them to see what their experiences are.

Maybe he should duck tape an axe to his bike
And just talk to himself loudly
That shud do -
I'm a Texan and proudly own guns. I'm even in the NRA, but really he'll be fine unarmed. Just don't carry all that cash he's collecting in a buggy behind the bike. Notify the local press and police depts. before he hits towns. Someone back home can easily do that for him. He'll be great. Folks do this stuff all the time through Texas and the US.

Good book I read in JH. I think it was called Walk Across America. Written in the late seventies. Check it out.

Agreed. I've always preferred knives over guns and have collected them for years. And you can carry a knife just about anywhere except federal buildings and be fine. Biking acrossed America will get lonely quick I suggest a partner. And I'd keep a knife with me just in case.Gun purchasing laws vary from State to State, but most require in-State identification to purchase a handgun from a retailer. Rifle and shotgun retail purchases tend to be different. Some States require in-State I.D.; some allow these weapons to be purchased from retailers with valid I.D. issued from any State.
Please note that I referred to retail purchases. In most States, no I.D. or background check is required when purchasing from a private party or, better, at a gun show. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
Still, for my money nothing beats the utility and value of a nice, sharp blade!
