MINORITY?! My father is a cancer doctor, who works (14-15) hours a day, has hundreds of patients a month, and nearly every one has lung cancer from smoking. He may save many but not all, and it ends up devastating their family no matter the outcome. Not to mention all the other doctors who find many smoking victims.Your points don't work for krissharm. Take your alcohol argument. The majority of drinkers actually aren't belligerent and obey laws. So why should they take up the whole tab because a few don't? Same with smoking. It's an increased health risk but nit a total one. Many smokers go their whole lives without any problem yet you want the majority of smokers to be punnished and pay because a minority have health problems

And those are just some of the health problems. If you survive, you will cough for the rest of your life, have some memory loss, and potentially end up stupid.

Smokers cost taxpayers a LOT of money. They all end up with cancer eventually. Then they have huge medical bills. If they have private insurance these bills cause our premiums to rise. If they have Medicare/Medicaid then we are paying directly from our taxes. I say we make a pack of cigarettes $60.
-
There is no supportive evidence that all smokers get cancer eventually.

There's no supportive evidence that we all don't get cancer eventually.
And I said it before: if cigarettes weren't taxed 1000%, in addition to having 60% of our incomes go back into government, maybe taxpayers wouldn't have to pay so much. They could afford insurance.

Immune systems wear down with age. Smoking skips all of the aging and gives you lung cancer and/or many other sicknesses. We all get sick with age, but not neccisarrily that sick. See, the government cannot make it illegal, or smoking will continue (Example: Pot, cocaine, and meth.) The best other option is to tax it until people cannot afford it, and quit. It weighs down on people who have insurance because of the healthcare smokers need.
-
All smokers are sick, just some less than others. You smoke, you're infected.
-
But punitive taxes technically are a violation of freedom

I love the "anti-smoking" ad campaign paid for by the government...like they want you to quit. Smokes have been over 10 (12 for name brands) for a couple years here in canada. If everyone quit smoking tomorrow the economy would crumble and the gov't knows it. They don't want you to quit they're a huge cash crop. That being said I quit with and electeonic cigarette. They taste better smell better and are 1/100th as bad for you as actual smoking. And a fraction of the price. In 4 months the e-butts have paid for them selves at least 5 times over. So get yourself a space smoke and save your money and your life.

"Yes! Please!"
"Now you may choose an apple or a chocolate bar."
"Give me the apple. It's not as fattening."
