Because no one is forcing you to smoke. You have to have food, water, somewhere to live hell clothes but you don't HAVE to smoke, but if you choose to do so it could be contributing. That can't be a bad thing. And why should smokers be the ones to pay for nhs? What obligation do they have to pay more toward it than anyone else?
I don't know what it's like in the US but here on a Friday and Saturday night particularly
Town and city centres are full of police dealing with drunk and abusive people, so I'd also like to see alcohol tax go directly to policing. All I'm saying is, if you must pay tax it should be obvious what it is being spent on.
My facts on cost of NHS might be bull, I can't find the same page now, now i want it -

Your points don't work for krissharm. Take your alcohol argument. The majority of drinkers actually aren't belligerent and obey laws. So why should they take up the whole tab because a few don't? Same with smoking. It's an increased health risk but nit a total one. Many smokers go their whole lives without any problem yet you want the majority of smokers to be punnished and pay because a minority have health problems
-
Might as well implement fat tax.
-
Why not, why should those who can not pay income tax because they are too over weight to work but still claim
Benefits of those of us who do work?
Really unhealthy food is cheaper than healthy food a lot of the time, tax on unhealthy food could subsidise the cost of healthy food so the poorest could eat a better diet and cost less to the health services in the long run through better health? -
What do you think tax is for? Yeah it's shit and always too much and we don't really want to pay it. I agree, I'm there. But if you could actually see the tax you pay actually paying for things, not going to some black hole?
If no one pays tax how can your country function? Who pays? -

Don't subsidize poor quality food crops and food wouldn't be so unhealthy.
Your government intervention in these cases is what caused the problems to begin with.

I don't live in New York, I don't smoke. Therefore, I don't care. Don't like the price? Quit smoking and buy three packs of gum for $3. Lasts longer and has the opposite effect on your mouth.

I'm talking about the fact that a multipack of chocolate bars cost less than a multipack of apples. If you are on a low income what are you going to buy?krissharm wrote:

Chocolate is a better food than apples, nutritionally. Think about it.
Made with the same sugars that are in apples, contains vegetable fat, proteins, liposomes... Apples are hard to live on.
-
Are you serious?
-
Not liposomes... You know.. The good ones... Uhhh... Antioxidants... That.

Apple guy dead in 2 months.

Maybe I am confusing poor with starving. Silly me.

Well this went to hell fast

Walking a desert, near collapse... A village appears... "Here, have some water.. You must be parched.."
"Yes! Please!"
"Now you may choose an apple or a chocolate bar."
"Give me the apple. It's not as fattening."
Derp.

The chocolate is going to give you instant sugar to your blood so in that scenario it would be better, but you know that in the long run the apple is better.
In any case that is one example of highly processed food being cheaper than fresh food. And in that price range we wouldn't be talking solid chocolate blocks. -

Ok an apple releases sugar slower, is low in saturated fat and salt. It has fibre and vitamin C within it. Yes not vast amounts but compared to say a kitkat bar, which is high in saturated fat and mostly sugar.

I'm trying to get you to think about food at a lower level. A sugary fruit, like an apple, is not nutritious. It's not food. It's a snack. Horses like them, but can't live on them.Ok an apple releases sugar slower, is low in saturated fat and salt. It has fibre and vitamin C within it. When it comes to food, the biggest thing is calories, then proteins, then "vitamins", fiber, minerals, etc.
From that perspective, a can of "highly processed" olive oil is the best food you can drink.
Dark chocolate is healthy in moderation, and more nutritious than apples or celery, or just about any fruits and vegetables.
But I digress... Government meddling is most often bad, and smoking should not be taxed so high.
-
An apple was just an example...
But I see what you are saying. For the smoking, don't you see if it were proportional to health costs it may even have lower tax?
-

Whole other argument. I'll leave it at that.

krissharm wrote:
No it's not. If the government didn't put 1000% taxes on cigarettes, AND take 60% of their income on top of it, maybe they could afford to pay their doctor. Government is not insurance. Insurance is. Pool money privately with an incentive to be efficient. It's cheaper that way for everyone.Whole other argument. I'll leave it at that.
Sin tax is theft.

Because they have practically killed themselves anyway. If you quit early, you will still be a little screwed up with memory and health, but if you keep on smoking, rotten mouth, yellow wrinkly skin, lung cancer, and thousands of dollars spent on cigs and all your trips to the hospital await you.And why should smokers be the ones to pay for nhs? What obligation do they have to pay more toward it than anyone else?
