How long does/would it take to travel a lightyear? A year? I think it's a long shot and believe we found planets similar to this n yet to find life,Although def is other planets like ours I'm sure

Or would a lightyear take a year to reach "IF" we was travelling at the speed of light?
-
Well let's hope their better mannered than we are, otherwise just more warring factions to deal with. 😋

A year if traveling speed of light. 2 years at 50% speed of light. 4 years at 25% light speed. I'd guess 10% is what we could aim at achieving. So a 20 light year distance would take 200 years, more if you take into account acceleration and deceleration periods.
Time dilation at that speed would mean slightly less time was noticed by the crew on board, but only by a day or two by my rough calcs lol -
That puts into perspective, that's a long way, with our tech that's still a long way off for a good few years,a whole new travel system would have to be designed probably?
-
I really hope that we see evidence (hard undeniable ) ,in our life times! It's hard looking when u don't know what ur looking for? For instance like organisms that sustain life diff to ours. So many possibilities I find it exciting

Well even if they did find life on that planet that would be a major government decision whether or not to release it to the public. It may be hush hush stuff that the government will keep a secret until either the president or the CIA allow it to be public. But major preparations would be done first. A new organization and more government funding into the space program if we will ever settle there.
-
Plus even I we do get to the planet. Who is the leader? How will the countries agree on who can settle where and where they can colonize and make their own. Many agreements would have to be made before ANY consideration goes into sending ANYTHING to the planet. We don't wanna risk a major war due to arguments over colonizing a distand planet. And then we have the 3rd world countries. How will they afford to get there? They will feel betrayed and left behind. Plus if we don't change our ways first and be more green, we will just pollute up and wreck that planet too. It will turn out just how earth is now. Many preperations would have to happen before we even go. Most likely what they would send first is an unmanned probe with many gadgets that can be set to automatically enter the t If the conditions seem fair, then they MAY send an animal to see what will happen.

Continuing from ⬆: If there is a different species of life living there, it would takes years of studying to figure out their language, culture, and see how advanced they are compared to us. Hopefully they are friendly and we could make an agreement to share the planet. A worst case scenario would be an extremely large war to take over the planet. We would need an extremely large invasion force to take the planet. We would also need to invent a space craft that can attack in space, and in atmospheres without using so much fuel. Also that can travel long distances. We would also need as many countries as we can get to support us and give us troops

@ mizman
At 20 ly distant, there is no way we would send an animal first. 200 years for it to get there? Unmanned animal generational ship sounds heavily unfeasable. Then waiting a further 20+ years for the telemetry. Maybe an ultra high speed probe first to determine conditions. But it would make sense to launch the manned ship before it got there anyway.
As to who would lead, either a brand new country made up from the countries Working together to fund the trip. Or it would be down to classic 'who plants the flag first gets it'
It wouldn't matter either way. At 4 generations of travel or 20 years for a simple message, the new planet would be independent regardless.
And I'd guess we'd take better care of the next planet, it's the difference between being given a car, and buying one for yourself. You always look after the thing that cost you better than the thing you just had. -

If they send humans... Who would it be? Scientists? Government agents? Arm soldiers?

All those and more. You'd be sending enough people to start a whole new sustainable population. All needed trades would need to be present. Farmers, miners, engineers, scientists, police, administrators. Think golgafrincham A and C arks rolled into one. LolIf they send humans... Who would it be? Scientists? Government agents? Arm soldiers?
As a side note. I'd guess frozen ovum and sperm would be sent along to bolster the genetic diversity of the arriving population -

I was reading an article that said we could triple our travel speed in space in only a year if the US spent half of it's war budget on space exploration. They spend less than .5% of it at the moment.
Do you believe everything you read?
Let's just throw money at aids and cancer research...maybe then we'll find a cure...not

I disagree that we can't in our lifetime... People in the past said we couldn't make it to the moon in their lifetime.

Layer! exactly people! Exactly

But what happens if there is life on that planet?

By the fact they haven't noticed life yet. I don't think they will be advance. So may like earths cows or deers and stuff
-
The sooner they find another planet, where I can kill another bug.the better.I am in steroids
-
What if they are warlike and destroy us?

Pretty simple. If they did destroy the coloniser group, and travelled to destroy us back home. We would have around 180 years advance notice. Easily enough time to learn how to hand aliens their arse on a silver platter. Luckily we humans arnt exactly rubbish at violence.
