Thoughts?
I have my opinions but I'd like to hear some "intelligent" points of view on the recent happenings and accusations. Particularily from Americans as it seems to have your gov't pretty pissed off. Hmmm perhaps this is too strong a topic for tw forums. We shall see.

Maybe they could get some super glue to fix the leaks

This is old news -Putin is an alpha dog- Saudi Arabia doesn't like Iran- who cares. Just a slow news cycle.

I think that the US is the most vocal of the pissed off countries. There are also other countries that are pissed and some of them don't handle things with "kid gloves" like the US does. Assange may be committing suicide if he keeps this up. There are a lot of countries that don't give a rats ass about the public opinion on assassination.
-
Thats what I was getting at in a way bugsy. These new allegations of rape arose and that's what Interpol is saying he's wanted on. Frankly I think there's a real big possibilitie these allegations are a bullshit way to stuck a charge on him and get him extradited. But since we as the general public will never know for sure if he really was a rapist and they gov't can discredit anything he leaks ad the bullshit ramblings of a criminal. Failing that...it'll be an assassination.

I don't really think that the rape accusations are attempts at discrediting Assange. From what I have read about him, he seems to be kinda like a religious zealot. He thinks what he is doing is right and probably on some level thinks he is untouchable. If the rape stuff is an attempt to discredit, it seems kinda weak. It would be a government that would have kicked that off. If a government is going to take the risk, wouldn't it be more likely that they would do something that he would have A LOT harder time getting out of?
-
Julian assange was doing a good thing. If you read the first few leaks, they were actually very insightful, and kept the government on it's toes in terms of trying to keep corruption to a minimum.
Now, he's just another fame seeking individual. He'll end up shot at some point. -
Maybe you're right or maybe the small lie is the one that people don't question. Just like you. But I see your point. Either way he's discredited And the country he's in may call bullshit on a big lie so there'd have to be an investigation before extradition. All you need is a girl willing to say she was raped and bam you have grounds for extradition. No shortage of women on pay role willing to do whatever. So perhaps the small lie is more effective to achieve your goal. Custody. From they're free to make a big lie to thier suiting.

I agree with BK. they've had enough with assange being an obnoxious twit, and are willing to fudge a little bit to get him into their grasp

While I do see your point, it seems like Assange would be a problem as long as he breaths. Put him in jail and it is pretty much a given that an autobiography would be written dropping names. Why would any government deal with that headache, when you could just give him a pair of cement shoes and not have to worry about all the future problems. The guy did try to blackmail Amnesty International if what the news was reporting is true. He doesn't have a shortage of enemies. Someone kills him and then everyone points the finger at the other guys.

I agree with Lucca. Assange did far worse than the pilots of the apache in the video "Collateral Murder". The info he leaked got countless civilians killed because they or someone they knew helped the US and allies, while the people on the ground in the video had AKs and RPGs. RPGs are illegal except for personnel on duty with the Iraqi Police or Army. Those people on the ground were neither and you don't carry that stuff around just for fun.

Look, until he uncovers classified documents about the aliens in Area 51, I don't really care much for what he's doing 😜

If you read the news, he helped many groups in the beginning by leaking material from inside china on just how bad the conditions were.
Now, he doesn't discriminate. He just releases shit for the popularity and doesn't give a rats ass who is getting hurt. -
I'm not debating the boys in the apache thought they saw an rpg. But it looked like a camera to me. And the guy who pulled the trigger was acting on orders. It was the begging to engage the van that got me. They were picking up the wounded. I know for a fact that the rules of engagement clearly state the wounded are to be treated humanly. A Canadian soldier just went to jail for murder because he mercy killed a wounded afghan who probably wasn't going to make it. That guy, crawling away definatly wasn't about to fire an rpg.
-
However that's war. I'm not gonna debate that video because the boys are in the shit over there. They did what they thought they had to. I don't need to agree with it. Because I'm nit there loosing friends and getting shot at. I agree assange is now fame hungry. As much as I think gov'ts hide shit to cover there ass, I also realize they have to sometimes.

That is the point that a lot of people miss. The general public of the US doesn't have the stomach for war, which is why the military needs to be running the show. They also need to kick out the reporters that are embedded with the units (Riveria should have been shot in country is all Im gonna say about that) and do what is needed to win the war with minimal US casualties. However that's war.

It was an ugly scene that depicts war. Be mindful that the enemy are not uniformed soldiers of a state, and any regulations that exist for the fair treatment of enemy combatants typically specify that they be "legal" war fighters, and not people engaged in sabotage, murder, espionage, terrorism, etc. The rules for these types of combatants usually specify execution, often on the spot. Should these rules be modified? Probably. But for now, WHEEEEEEE!!... It was the begging to engage the van that got me. They were picking up the wounded. And now we also know that U.S.A ruined military affairs for Sweden worth 55 million (kr/dollar?)

Thanks for keeping this thread non-arguey. I enjoyed talking-to a random cross section of people about this and not having it flame up. Bottom line for me is assange isn't out for the "greater good". And although I'd like the chance to know more about the secrets kept from the general public it's not really going to make anything better for either side. All it will do is incite anger and make things worse.
-
I wonder what's next.
-
Assents isn't out for greater good as you said. The greater good is for him to stop breathing. As for the guy with an RPG, shooting on site was the rule when I was in Iraq. Only state personnel were allowed to have them. An RPG is a very distructive weapon and helos are really vunerable to RPG (and to lesser extent small arms fire). The military is acting in a police role, however, this is not the typical police situation. The pilots were in danger from the RPG since it doesn't take long to fire and a direct hit isnt needed to bring a helo down. There isn't a bull horn on apaches either. 😄
