Anyone here raise chickens? Do you have problems with things like a fox or anything else eating them? Looking for suggestions if so.
-
My chickens when I was a little younger had life very good - we let them have free reign of the entire property. Never had any problems literally for years until a hawk started to see very easy targets.
After losing 3, we made a giant coop to protect them from anything on the ground, or the sky.

Depends on where you live. Coyotes, fox, wild cats, hawks. Chickens are food for them. Chickens are pretty low on the food chain.

If it’s just foxes, just check up on your fencing or whatever you use. Foxes will usually slip through almost anything. Flashing lights are a good deterrent and keep the fox away, but if the fox finds out the light is static it’ll come back. Dogs work. Usually the smell of one, domestic or not, is enough to make the fox decide it isn’t worth the fight.
-
Oh, also, foxes will dig under wire if it isn’t deep enough. My cousin typically has 4 feet underground to prevent it.

Inches*, not feet.

Depending on how well you do with strong smells you can get coyote urine and spread it around the area.

I’ve heard of people using their own hair, too.

I know that works well for deer, but I'm not sure how well it works for predators.redonhishead wrote:

Foxes are fairly timid, so I could see it working for them. Maybe smaller predators aswell, like a weasel.
-
Don’t let them out if you have a lot of hawks like we do 🪦
-
Get yourself a good guard dog. They seem to have a natural urge to protect them. Weird but it works

Chicken wire up top and 3/4 buried concrete slabs around the bottom should keep the foxes out. If it doesn’t, shoot the fucker.

Use chickens as bait to catch and eat foxes. That’s the only logical solution.

Never tried it. If you do eat ‘em, let me know how it tastes.

Probably tastes pretty decent with the right seasoning.🔥B337🔥 wrote:

Corn fed chicken fed fox. Tasty.

Do not underestimate raccoons. They have been known to tear a few chicken heads off in the middle of the night as well. Happened to a good friend of mine on his farm. And they are craftier than foxes with those hands. Good luck.

Koalas rip through any kind of standard chicken wire and will maul all of your chickens within minutes. You think foxes are problematic..
-
Little salt and pepper would probably work on koalas too. 🍽

We have two Great Pyrenees that guard the animals. We have hung a piece of meat far away from the animals and picked them off with a .223 as well.

The worst problem is they can jump the fenced in area you have them in. From my experience

Article with a descent table towards the end that lists most likely predator to have eaten your chicken based on the crime scene;
