OK, be nice. I'm taking my family for a California adventure in July. In San Fran for 3 days, want to take a leisurely drive 2 day drive to LA, 3 days in LA, back to San Fran for a day.
Give me your must see in San Fran, fun driving trip to LA with an overnight stop enroute, LA spots to see once we're there.
No, your favourite strip club / meth lab do not qualify. Kids and all that.

2 day drive down? Pffffft.

... We're stopping to smell the roses. Cayucos?

Definitely check out North Oakland the night life is great. Just over the bay bridge from San Fran. LA area: South Central and Compton are making a comeback as well nice dining options.
-
It’s definitely a slower and tougher drive, but take Highway 1 down the coast and see probably the most beautiful coastline in the US. Moro Bay is a nice midway point to stop. I can’t speak to LA at all, though. Totally different world than NorCal. When in SF, check out the usual spots like Coit Tower, GG Bridge, Sausalito, etc. And make sure to go to the Mission and get a burrito!
Btw Traffic in the Bay can be awful. Some of the worst in the country. Plan accordingly.

San Francisco, fishermen’s wharf. They have a parking lot somewhere down there so your good.
-
fisherman’s wharf/pier 39 is a popular tourist spot. golden gate bridge as always, the presidio is a nice little spot right next to the bridge where you can get some nice pics (not quite sure how foggy the view is throughout the day). if you’re into chocolate, theres ghiradelli square. if you like clam chowder, you can try boudin’s. theres also a madame tussaud’s wax museum (never been) and a ripley’s believe it or not museum (pretty interesting stuff, good for a couple hours). if you have time/are willing to drive farther, you can also checkout napa or santa cruz boardwalk
supposedly the drive down i1 to la has really nice views but does take significantly longer than going down the i5. i know next to nothing between sf and la 😂. you can ride atv’s on the sand dunes at pismo beach and i hear santa barbara is nice though.
dont know much about la besides hollywood walk of fame, griffith observatory, and disneyland/universal studios. there is catalina island you can check out, around a 1hr boat ride.
-
oh! almost forgot, my favorite strip club is killer whale’s place and natas runs the best meth lab 👍🏼.
-
You’ll also find the Fucking Catalina Wine Mixer on the Catalina Island!

Absolutely planning on driving down the coast ...

I avoid tourist stuff so Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf give me a migraine- but they are popular spots for a reason. So depends on what you want. I hang out in the mission a lot. Excellent food, great bars, local color. Valencia has gotten spruced up but still cool. All depends on what you like. Kids along? Magnolia Smokestack BBQ with great selection on tap in doglatch, Height Ashbury for touristy but still cool. What interests you?

Oh and strongly agree. SF to Carmel via SantaCruz hwy 1 is life changing. Big Sur stop is Napenthe! And Julia Pheiffer Park if you have time. Road is / was blocked there so have to backtrack.
-
Better go see Yosemite. Only 2 hrs east of the Bay Area. SF is highly overrated.

Grew up in LA, Compton and south central is not as bad as it used to be, but I still wouldn’t wander around an area I’m not familiar with in LA and just in case you get lost be wary of what color everyone is wearing 😅སͬɐͣ♰ͥιͩѳͤསͬ wrote:

Kids will be 16 / 19 years old ... Haight Ashbury, maybe a little vinyl shopping. Everything interests us ... Music, good food, good drink, art ... My kids are cooler then I am and up for anything.

Not a Cali native but if you’re vinyl shopping it might be worth putting amoeba on your list.

Compton has gotten a lot of infrastructure changes recently. Can’t really say much about the dining in the area.✞€ℍ₳ℙ╚₳ł₦✞ wrote:

Love the suggestions but must add our beloved Napa burned, so my son who lives in San Fran said. One of my fave places

If you can make it in June, there are a couple parades you might enjoy.
But even in July, the Castro district in SF and West Hollywood in LA are certainly places you’ll be proud to visit.
Maybe I'll run into your Dad.

2 hours east if you go at 5:00 am. Last time we went, we couldn’t even get into the park. Lines are looong.

It’s the off season right now. You shouldn’t hit much traffic. On the way there stop at the iron door saloon, it’s the oldest bar in the western states.ƝཐϮཐڪᵪͣᵥͩᵢͩ wrote:

The front door to the Record Plant in Sausalito is kind of cool to take a selfie in front of if you are an old burned out recording engineer.

Two hours there and back and two hours in the park if you stay in the car. Yosemite is great but plan a full day or two.⇚❹☠❶☠❺⇛ wrote:

Great ideas from the guys. I love SF we go often, i lovethe touristy places like Fishamens Warf, restaurants, Alcatraz, harbor boat tours, pier 39. You have to see the classic tourist areas if you haven’t been there before. LA not so much. Family does own a beach house south of LA but NO you can’t stay there! 😳😳😳🐢

Cable cars and Chinatown in San Fran

There’s very little left of the SF of old, but it’s still a relatively beautiful city. I grew up in Frisco (I think the only city native here?), so if you want specific suggestions, you can PM me re: views, sites, drives, restaurants, or whatever. Have fun, man. I miss living there.
