Be sure to check the condition of the 101 before you try to drive the coast. It’s a disaster right now with the earthquakes, then fires, then floods and mudslides. Portions of it have been closed for a while and are still closed for at least the next week and taking detours could add hours to your trip.

I was just gonna say what Bella did. Portions of the 1 have been washed out by mudslides. Check your route before you go. Which is a damn shame. The 1 from Santa Barbara up to Frisco is one of the most beautiful drives you could do. Splitting it up is smart that’s what we did when we did it too. Can take your time.
I’m not a huge fan of touristy stuff when in the Bay Area but Alcatraz is really cool. That was the one thing I really enjoyed. It’s not that expensive and doesn’t take all day. -

... Luckily not travelling until July and will stop along the way for a day ... But good advice, thanks.

Oh okay. I was just coming to drop this off because the reopening has been delayed.

If you go to Catalina don’t plan on planting there unless you want to feed the fatties 😏;
Check out port o’call in San Pedro if your family is into seafood, Vinice beach is a nice stroll in the beach during the day than head to Santa Monica pier towards the sunset, hollywood is an ok walk but gets a little boring unless you plan a night tour for a tourist, go to a dodger game around that time of the season, and definitely don’t waste an extra day drive it’s not necessary unless you’re going to stop in solvang near Santa Barbara. Lmk if there’s any other interest you’re into. Cheers and enjoy. I’ll look for the California tourist link and pm you. -

Point is you need to go to Compton and stare at people. It helps if you wear all blue as well.

Back at home after having a great California adventure with the family. Ate up as much as San Francisco as we could, had a really beautiful drive down the 101 (With a quick overnight stay in Cayucas) to Los Angeles and did as much as we could in LaLa land.
Thanks to everyone who posted and DMd suggestions, we went through every single one and tried to check them all out. My kids think my Turf Wars friends are weird and are frankly are frightened by you.
San Francisco is a much cooler place then LA in my experience.
Still don’t understand why BAIC are the most humourless sourpusses when you have the opportunity to live in a really beautiful part of the planet. 😄. Teasing, chill out.

Alcatraz was a really neat adventure. I think the place is really in danger of crumbling because it gets blasted by salt water (one of the reasons it closed in 1963) but the audio guide tour was well done. It’s a spooky place full of old ghosts.

... ended up staying in Emeryville where I have family and Ubering into Oakland / San Fran. Had a great dinner at a place called MAU in Oakland to meet up with some old friends.

I avoid tourist stuff so Pier 39 and Fisherman’s Warf give me a migraine- but they are popular spots for a reason. So depends on what you want. I hang out in the mission a lot. Excellent food, great bars, local color. Valencia has gotten spruced up but still cool. All depends on what you like. Kids along? Magnolia Smokestack BBQ with great selection on tap in doglatch, Height Ashbury for touristy but still cool. What interests you?
... hung out in Haight Ashbury, damn hippies think it’s still 1967. Everyone smoking dope on the street, cost me another meal for a family of 4 because we got the munchies. Cali isn’t cheap when you’re making a living on the Canadian dollar.
