Is it free speech, or should it be criminally punishable?
-
That's not free speech and anybody that does it should get their ass kicked.

If you want to get technical, yes, it is "free speech" as defined by the Constitution, but I personally don't think of it as such. The flag is a symbol of unity of the 50 States and burning it is only giving a grand ol' "ℱuck you" to those who've commited their lives to protect and serve our nation. That's not free speech and anybody that does it should get their ass kicked.
-
It's definitely freedom of speech, and while I, like most people, find it reprehensible, that doesn't change anything. Someone wiser than I said if you don't support freedom of speech you disagree with, you don't support freedom of speech at all.
That said, freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of your speech, so while I support your right to do it, I won't shed any tears if someone kicks the shit out of you for doing it.

The only reason I ask is because this player "EvadeKiller" is a huge proponent of burning flags, and invited me and my brother over to burn one with him and his brother

"Hey guys what do you think of this controversial subject?"
And the very next post is
"Oh by the way this player, here's his name, is pro controversial subject."
Fight your own battles yeez.

My question is how is it freedom of speech? Is burning the Bible freedom of speech? How about the Quran? Someone's home? It's not speech at all it's straight up wrong!

Of course burning your own flag, Bible or Koran is protected speech. You can do whatever you like with your property. You could even burn your own home, just make sure you own it, and aren't paying a mortgage, you'd need to cancel the insurance too or it could be insurance fraud. My question is how is it freedom of speech? Is burning the Bible freedom of speech? How about the Quran? Someone's home? It's not speech at all it's straight up wrong!
You can't burn someone else's flag, Bible, Koran or home. That's depriving someone else of their property. You have no right to do that.
-
Desecration, vandalism, physical destruction.... none of the above is any form of speech.

I understand the sentiment here, but I have to say burning a flag is protected absolutely as free speech and it absolutely should be.
You are free to love your country and pretend the flag is more than a colored rag.. Some sort of religious artifact that people literally die for.. But it's not. It's just a symbol. Destroying it does not harm anything it stands for. It only offends people that want to hold it as sacred. Offending people in a show of political defiance is absolutely why free speech must be protected from mob rule in the Constitution. It's protected because people want to take it away when they disagree.
I will honor their right to burn a flag, and they must honor my right to cheer on Trump and call them pussies.

I mean although I disagree with it I'll admit it is protected free speech, just like burning a bible or koran

No it's not "free speech" only moronic liberals and/or millenials think it's acceptable. Anyone who burns this countries flag should be dragged out of it by their fkn tongues. Thank God under Trump a lot of this liberal bullsht and hypocrisy will be checked properly.
PS if you think burning a flag is ok your mother was probably a whore and your father a coward of the first order -
No, the Supreme fucking Court, which has been conservative since Reagan's first term, says it's free speech, and Trump doesn't get to overrule them. He can say he does, but that's primarily because he has a grade C understanding of 8th grade civics.

I leave symbols for the symbol minded😅

What about all that tea you threw away.

I was brought up to respect the flag. It didn't matter what anyone's political beliefs were. The flag means freedom, and there are plenty of other countries that don't get to experience our way of life. If a law says that people can burn flags, it's still not going to change my feeling about the flag. I would never burn it.
-
I was brought up to respect the flag, too. Some people are brought up to pray east 5 times a day and to never drink alcohol or eat pork. You can't expect others to feel the same way about it that you do.
The fact is, the flag does have powerful meaning, and that's why burning it, hanging it upside-down, or wearing it as a jacket is a political statement. If the free speech ammend is for anything, it's to protect political statements.
I fold my flag properly, don't fly it at night, don't let it touch the ground.. All that stuff. I grew up in a military family, boy scouts, was in the Navy, all that stuff too. But we honor free speech in this country, and flags are just a bit of cloth. I'm not proud of the flag. I'm proud of the country, the people that fought for our ideals, and our culture.
Frankly, if you stop getting your panties in a bunch every time you see the flag mistreated, the statement they are trying to make will become kinda pointless and they won't do it as much. Just a thought.
-
Brown has it right. It has been protected as free speech since 1969 in a Supreme Court ruling on the subject.
-
But it's OK to put the flag on a napkin and use it to wipe potato salad off your face with it? Or stick it on your butt and wear it as a swimsuit? I think it is the free speech you have a problem with, rather than the flag?

You don't get to deport American citizens because you don't like their views, Chap.

Burn everything! Screw the laws and constitution! Everyone will be under the ways and laws of our friends in the sand! Hope every one asked for burkas this year from Santa!
