When hoping on the map, moving in a diagonal direction will allow you to use the outer most areas of your hop range and yield you the greatest distance per turf.
The reason water turf are against TOS is due to the fact that Nick's circles float. Nick could never lock down turf that was on water for some reason and turf would eventually migrate completely on their own.
