You said she's able bodied and doesn't work, right? Well, time to put on her big girl pants and get a J.O.B. That shithole in ND is calling her away to the self-sufficiency and freedom that only a drive-thru cash register at McCardiac's can provide. Ahh, the American dream.★fnord★ wrote:
I think I found a solution for you, Mack. It was staring you in the face this whole time. Your girlfriend needs to move to Dickinson, ND and get a job at McDonalds, and stop being a drain on society. If it's good enough for those other people on the welfare rolls then it's good enough for her, right? Tell me where I'm wrong.
I didn't say she was gaming the system. She's following the rules exactly how they're written. I just believe the rules need to be changed.

Dude so the fuck what. I don't live in Texas I live in California. Where the unemployment rate in the last couple years was as high as 10%. And I'm sure as shit not moving to Texas to work at mcdonalds. When you say that people that aren't working it's because they don't want to, you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.☣ 🎸ӈɪƖƖßıƖƖγ🎸☣ wrote:

Want to start at $14 an hour? McDonald's Odessa is hiring. Want to start at $16 an hour? Pioneer drilling has 3 rigs stacked cause they can't find enough people. Job

If your not willing to go where the work is and make sacrifices for your family, then it's your own fault for being on welfare. (Not saying you are) you don't have to work at mcdonalds, but there is a ton of work out there if you're willing to do it.
-
Better yet, drive down I-20 from midland to Odessa. Not exaggerating that there are 300 companies needing workers. My gf and I counted like 65 help wanted signs one day. And if mcdonalds pays $14/he to start, I imagine those other places are paying a lot more. Don't tell me their aren't jobs. During this recession I've gone from $1000 a week salary to 22/hr to 28/hr to 32/hr and now 390 a day. Hard work and a willing to sacrifice got me here.

Oh and btw it's not as simple as "oh if you're not willing to go where the work is blah blah blah" Sorry but I'm not pulling up everything and leaving all my family behind to work at fucking McDonald's. Get real. -

And I'm not on welfare thanks. Since my wife and I work full time we definitely dont qualify. And even when I was unemployed she still made too much for us to get benefits. Ain't that a bitch? So we should just become a nation of migrant workers, chasing extraction related jobs all over the country from one boom town to the next? That's apparently the best we can hope for now that our manufacturing core has been hollowed out. It's simply not sustainable. Sad.
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa....I live in ND. I'm white, but I have four kids, two of which are adopted and decidedly black. We have only been back up here for a year and four months, and have experienced much less overt racism than in other supposedly more enlightened areas of the country. We don't live in Dickenson, and I haven't been there in four or five years, it's nightlife will never match a large metropolitan area's, but the people are generally friendly.
And how come all of a sudden this one antecdotal statement is suddenly enough to make Dickenson a shithole?
-
Ok. There are 2 companies right now needing 50 employees each that you can start with zero experience. One starts at $17/hr and provides a company truck to drive home on your days off. Work is 12 hours a day for 20 days. Then 10 days off. Or, go get a CDL for $95 dollars and go to the company hiring vac truck drivers. Not sure what the hourly pay is, but 2 of their guys told me they will knock down $90k this year. Patterson UTI is hiring rig hands. Once again, no exp needed. Work is in the elements working 12 hour shifts. 14 days on, 14 days off. Or I guess you can sit in SoCal and struggle to feed your family. Whatever you prefer.

We're debating exclusively using isolated anecdotes now. Mack's idea.
-
Instead of "pounding pavement" I took the first job I saw and went to work. Would look while I was still making money. I've dug fucking post holes with Mexicans for $7/hr before. Loaded bricks on scaffolding for $8/hr. I make great money now, but I'm always looking for something bigger and better. Don't give me a line of crap about "it's too hard". Man up and provide.

Of course it's not sustainable. This boom will bust like it always does. But why not make the stacks of cash while it's on the table???? Instead of sitting back bitching about how hard life is, go live it!

Out of curiosity, what's the job market like up there in ND?

Allow me to clarify: It's not sustainable for America! And when the whole thing comes crashing down and even your job disappears, who are you going to blame then? Poor people once again? That would be par for the course because you would be on the road to joining them. People need careers they can build a future on, not migrant work at low skilled jobs. I can't believe I have to explain this basic fact, it's ridiculous that you think this is okay.★fnord★ wrote:

Yes I'm sure that's nice where there's a ton of shit jobs no one wants to do. California and Texas are worlds apart. Know why there's so many jobs there? Because people keep leaving. When the oilfield crashes, I'll go back home and use the wealth that I've acquired doing this to open my own truck shop. Or go back to welding, roofing, or whatever I think makes the most money. I figure there's still another 5-10 years left in this boom. I'm making 125k a year now. Or as you suggested, I could go home and make 50k. Only thing I owe money on is her SUV and a camper I bought. I'll be debt free by the end of this year. Or I could go back to putting clutches and engines in Mack trucks and beat my body up more. But either way, I'll still be making a lot of money.

Would you say that the pay is higher there than the same job in say California?
-
Some jobs probably pay more than the same job in California, but not all jobs do.
For instance a truck driver on the oil fields can make around 100k, that's probably more than in Cali. However, a Dr., lawyer, school teacher, nurse, cop, ect., ect, would make less than the same job in Cali.
That's said, if you have a strong back and strong work ethic you can make good money even with minimal education.

Side note:
Texas has no state income tax. California does.
Texas has 3.5 billion in a rainy day fund.
How many billions is California in debt? -

How many billions is California in debt? That's really the best argument you could come up with....? But yes, I have. I moved to and back from the Virgin Islands. And I've lived all over Texas.

It's not an argument it's a question. Not everyone is financially stable enough to move, but for the sake of flow here let's say it is an argument. If someone can't afford to move that's not a good excuse? It seems pretty reasonable to me lol.🔰darkmagician🔰 wrote:

How is that relevant to anything. What's your answer for that since you've got an answer and solution for everything else?Side note:

Sorry I was busy working. Now, none of the jobs that I mentioned require you to move. But for the sake of the argument I'll say they do. When I first came to Odessa to work I didn't have the money for a place to live. Took everything I had in diesel to actually make it. I lived in my truck the first 2 weeks at a Loves truck stop till I made a check. Then I bought my camper. Maybe my attitude is diff. Instead of looking for excuses for my failures, I look for ways to improve so I don't make them again. I had to sell a fav gun for when I went to ND. If you're going to tell me the reason you can't come make the huge money that out here right now is because you can't figure out a way to make it, then I say mcdonalds wherever you are is probably the best place to be for you.

My gf is still inside the bounds of the law. Is it shady, yes. But still inside the law. No worse than taking every single tax deduction possible. She doesn't own an SUV, I do. As far as the clothes and purses go, do u report to the IRS every time you buy your mom a gift? File anything on the Christmas gifts you have? All I've heard so far is bullshit excuses for failure.
