Political correctness /= toleranceIt is much easier to live in a world where those who chose to be or hold some religious beliefs generally keep it to themselves. The further out of context the discussion gets the fewer people actually fimilerize themselves with the actual facts. Your freedom to be you includes my freedom to be free from you!
Snarky comment to follow from usual suspects soon. LolAgain, my point.

I would agree, A&E has a contractual agreement with him and Phil represents A&E whether Phil thought about that or not isn't the point. So A&E can suspend him or whatever. You get no argument there from me. But that is not what this whole posting has been about. It's been turne into how Phil is a bigot, homophobe and now a racist by you.Ùℵɖḝཞ Ʈʘώ wrote:

The problem is Phil was alive during that period and he's giving his opinion that African Americans seemed happier then than they typically do now. Since he experienced it I personally feel he has every right to make that statementMr. Rob wrote:
Shhhhh! The supporters will do the same with the Bible. Find some snippets they agree with and ignore the rest.I'm surprised that there hasn't been any discussion on his comments about African Americans. I feel that is the other half of the story. Phil Robertson claims that, from what he saw, African Americans were happier under Jim Crow laws of the 50's and 60's. This has to be as bad as the comments about homosexuality. Lynching and beatings of black men and women for attempting to vote or simply walking down the street. This shows an overall pattern of intolerance.

Freedom of Speech: The legal means to say almost anything you want. Meaning that as private citizens, we’re allowed to say nearly anything (with a few exceptions of course) that we want without fear of legal prosecution for it.
Unless I’ve missed something, Mr. Robertson faces no legal ramifications for what he said. That’s what freedom of speech means. Freedom of speech does not mean we can say anything we want without ramifications for what we say from our peers or employers. -
We’re free to be racist, bigoted, anti-Semitic — pretty much anything we want. We can be these things, no matter how ignorant, because that’s what the Constitution gives us the right to be.
But that doesn’t mean within a society we won’t face consequences for those “freedoms.” The suspension of Phil Robertson is not an attack on Robertson’s right to believe how he wants. It’s a consequence from an employer for him expressing an opinion which A&E feels represents them in a negative light.
When he signed his contract, it almost certainly included a clause that says he’s a representative of A&E and is expected to act accordingly. All public figures, whether they want to be or not, are representatives of something. Be it a company, a brand, a sports team or league – it’s the price that comes along with fame. -
Cracker Barrel issued a statement today saying "we messed up" by pulling any merchandise from their shelves associated with Phil and Ms Kay along with the "Happy Happy Happy" motto.

I think you're trying to say something negative about Cracker Barrel but I'm not seeing it. The fact of the matter is that there was a statement made by him that can be thought of as intolerant by more than just a small minority. The trust that companies make when they sell products relating to reality TV and other close industries to it is that it will be for financial gain with a neutral moral ground to it. When he makes a controversial comment like he did, he gives companies that value their overall reputation a reason to drop them from their business model, especially when they have very little bearing on it.Cracker Barrel issued a statement today saying "we messed up" by pulling any merchandise from their shelves associated with Phil and Ms Kay along with the "Happy Happy Happy" motto.

As a follow up: Cracker Barrel has now put those items back up for sale and has ordered more that will be sold at cost. CB apologized for not listening to its customer base. Pretty good statement from them IMO
-
And, more people have signed the "I stand with Phil" petition than have signed up for Obamacare. Phil for president next maybe...? 😳😳😳

If he's a bigot for not having your view, does that make you a bigot for not supporting his view?

I would say Phil probably represents the majority more than the minority. After all, the minority can only defend their argument by calling people with different views from theirs - bigiot, homophobe, racist, ignorant and they judge people based solely on their moral views.ᎷᎪᏟᏦᎷᎬᏟᎻ ᎪᎠᎠ ᏦᎷ wrote:

Phil was direct and to the point. "I think people who do these things are sinners..." "I won't discriminate against anyone, I try to save them. The almighty will judge them on their day of reckoning..."

Here's the difference geniuses. The bigot - Phil in this case, spreads hate and intolerance for things he sees as lesser than him and his values. This breeds things like separate bathrooms and water fountains or beaten/killed/bullied/ostracized/lesser rights "gays". These bigots affect their sheep which then in turn affects policy and legislation. There's a reason why there are groups like the NAACP and GLAD. Not for shits and giggles that's for sure. Change happens slowly. You may say the civil rights or gay rights movement is over now but Phil and his followers are a testament that it indeed is not. In turn the people they vote in to office that try to legislate unequal rights.
-
How about this. Everyone can stop having this conversation when people recognize separation of church and state in the constitution and stop meddling in these peoples lives. When they have the same rights as any other married couple then and only then will we be getting somewhere that doesn't look like lesser rights.
Also, when you, a white straight guy starts getting your actual rights (as apposed to your fantasy rights) taken away from you by a black majority or a gay majority, then we can talk about the poor pitiful first world problems of the white man.
-
Lol, the plight of the poor white male in America. All the opportunities denied because minorities and women pull the strings. The tiniest violin plays for you. FYI, Cracker Barrel never had any moral standing with most if us as far back as we can remember. In the 90's, their reaction to the sad news of the AIDS epidemic in America?... TO SYSTEMATICALLY FIRE EVERY GAY EMPLOYEE. Bad Karma like that is hard to shake, it's no wonder they're flip-flopping all over the place now.

The word has a clear definition and I think Phil more than qualifies. He's a preacher, a spiritual leader who claims to know god's will. For him to spread the poisonous message of fear and exclusion is irresponsible and culturally destructive. I simply believe in the values this country was founded on, freedom and liberty for all. There are countless Americans suffering under a long standing anti-gay agenda that supposed men of god like Phil perpetuate. Use whatever labels or false equivalencies you want, it's clear which argument is that of zealots and bigots.★fnord★ wrote:

I don't watch this show because it's a retarded show but from what I have read, the guy deserved what he got. Freedom of speech is one thing, yes you have the right to say it but it doesn't mean he shouldn't have to pay the moral consequences. If I said a racial slur in the middle of an African group, they aren't going to stand than and laugh because I had a right to say it. It would probably be the opposite of that. He should have known from the beginning that he would have lost a lot of fans by saying some stupid stuff at the very least. I do find it weird that family guy doesn't get this attention though, that show is one hundred times worse. Tho guys says one thing and he gets canned but family guy....

@pb
Good points but on family guy or Southpark - those shows make fun of everyone. Every race, every religion, everything and everyone. That's the difference. It's equal opportunity comedy. And, they are cartoon characters. Pretty sure the networks know exactly what they are getting in to with these controlled script shows. -
