👨GAY MEN CAN'T DONATE BLOOD👨
Forums › General Discussion › 👨GAY MEN CAN'T DONATE BLOOD👨-
If you are male and admit to having a sexual encounter with another man you are permanently barred from ever donating blood.
-
That depends on where you live. In Sweden there are health districts that have begin to accept blood donations from homosexual men.
Silly restriction really, as if (male) members of the gay community engage in riskier sexual behaviour than anyone else does. -
Choke on a gnat, swallow a camel.
-
When I have sex with my girlfriend we don't use protection, she is on the patch but nothing that would prevent diseases, I haven't been turned down to give blood 😬
-
Blood agencies are faulty, they don't do their job properly and admit no fault. My 94 year old grandmother needed blood in the 80,s and there were many others that were infected with hep c. Many died and were awarded money based on their age. They admitted no fault of their own. They changed their name, that is all they did.

... Not saying only gay men have anal sex, but proportionally a larger percentage of the gay community engages in anal than the heterosexual community.
The reason anal sex is more likely to spread AIDs is that the skin in your anus is more likely to year (thinner skin) and therefore more likely that blood will be part of the equation, thereby making it risky.
At the same time, seeker hit the nail on the head: this is a risk for anyone who doesn't use protection. There's also rules in regards to being in prison/jail in past (x) time frame. Having gotten a tattoo in past (x) time frame. Having traveled to certain regions of the world, etc.
It's def about controlling risk as much as possible. There is no absolute with any of it unfortunately. -
Hey Z what about pot smoking gay Cub Scout leaders in the army can they donate blood?

I didn't even know this until I went to donate blood for the first time back in the early 90s and that was one of a litany of questions the nurse asked. It was pretty embarrassing because it was a blood drive at work and I wasn't out yet but I answered honestly and didn't donate. My co-workers heard everything. Kinda tough way to come out at work...If you are male and admit to having a sexual encounter with another man you are permanently barred from ever donating blood.

Fine with me, there is a new statistic in Dallas of 3 new studies of the HIV virus appearing in mostly in Gay men. There were billboards for Gay awareness of men who have sex with men.

I didn't want to donate blood anyways.

Unless I see *credible* proof.
Taken from CDC website:
Nearly two thirds of these new infections occurred in gay and bisexual men. Black/African American men and women were also highly affected and were estimated to have an HIV incidence rate that was almost 8 times as high as the incidence rate among whites. So, after reading that, not only are us homosexual males more at risk for it. African Americans are as well.
Please list the 3 new studies indicating where the gay community is running rampant with HIV. 👍

To summarize, homosexual men were accountable for around 79 percent of cases of HIV/AIDS. Hopefully you didn't read or interpret it as "78% of homosexuals have HIV/AIDS. Perhaps there is a misconception regarding the homosexual population being "rampart" with HIV like mdpaulk stated.Since the statistic you say is from Dallas (Texas) I feel there may be religious and/or conservative bias. After all, these two groups of people are typically against homosexual's rights.
Anyways, can you please put the 3 articles here. I'd like to read them for myself. Thanks.

If CDC is to be believed, you certainly don't want to be an African American gay/bisexual man!! What a ridiculous statement. I too would be curious to see these studies.

I'm also interested in why you say "fine by me". Could you please explain your thought process when coming to that opinion?
BTW- I would have quoted you here, but you seem to have deleted your original post. Is there a reason for that? -
Excuse me: "fine _with_ me."
I misquoted you. -

Well, a long long time ago there was a thread about same sex marriage (or don't ask don't tell, something about homosexual rights) and Augustine was quite obvious in his strong opposition to gay rights.I'm also interested in why you say "fine by me". That's because males carry more ways of having disease without rashes or bumps pimples or other shit happen. It's a rule because its a rule. Nothing against gay men in any way.

Is that really true though? I find it hard to believe.
-
Actually, Brizz explained the reason for the rule earlier. I understand that it *is* a rule, I just think that with all the testing that's done it would be extremely rare for any tainted blood to get through to the supply.
-
The rules are a bit outdated. I think some of the rules preventing men who've had sex with men need revision, because many of them can donate safely and we almost always need more blood. I mean, seriously, having male homosexual contact at any time since 1977 (+/- a year, idr exactly) gets you deferred? I think that if you've had HIV for 35 years then you'd know it. We should ask about behavior instead, like unprotected sex with new partners (gender irrelevant) in the past year.
And because I want to brag, I passed the 5 gallon mark this year.

You worded this perfectly. Thank you.5 gallons? Whatttt.

Just tick the box to say you've had homosexual male sex and your blood gets further screening. Can't be that hard? But surely all blood is screened for HIV as standard?
Sorry, had to leave the unintended pun there!
-
It's only 40 pints. You can donate about 6x/year, so slightly less than 7 years. It took me more like 19 years but I was deferred for a while.

Don't mind Aug. he's like my sister in law. If they're holy and you're not, they're better than you. Period. No gray area. Seems like a very stifling way to live. I bet he buttons his shirts all the way to the top button too. -
El Chu, I don't think there's such thing as further screening. It's not like they have a more effective test for HIV than the one they usually use (I hope!)
BTW, HIV isn't the only thing they worry about. Hepatitis, BSE, Chagas' disease, babeosis (sp?), and a whole boatload of others.

Silly restriction really...... having anal sex is a riskier sexual activity.
The reason anal sex.....
The first however makes the assumption that gay men regularly engage in unprotected anal sex outside of a committed relationship. It isn't the anal sex part that is risky, it is the amount of partners one has unprotected (anal) sex with. Two STD-free individuals who enjoy unprotected anal sex within a committed relationship should not be barred from giving blood, gay or not.
And really, if it was the anal sex part that was the problem, why aren't we all asked that question? I've never heard of a straight woman at the blood bank being asked if she allowed for a hat trick the night before.
