Wyster, hes not saying that mars isnt totally cool. Hes just saying that this project may not be a legitimate project that will really happen as soon as it is saying on the internetEl Chubaneebre wrote:

They aren't going to mars to make it habitable, or to fix earth. They are going to do research and conduct experiments. And the trip itself is an experiment. Just because you don't see what the allure is does not mean there won't be a ton of people who do. There are already astronauts who spend considerable time away from earth with only a couple people. Fishermen and other boaters do the same in the ocean. Submariners go under water with only 100 other people for up to a year at a time. Obviously it's not for you. But that doesn't make it a hoax.I'm not sure what the allure is

It'll be Ranoke all over again

Aluvion - have you read any of the Mars One literature? It is not just an 'experiment', they are sending ordinary people. Not scientists etc. if you want to do that send robots, you don't need so much support structure. Tell me 1 job that has 4 people in close contact for 2 years that can never come home? Maybe you have spent a long time with a small bunch of people, if so then you know how difficult that is..... now multiply that by infinity! I worked on cattle stations in WA, 4 + months at a time with 9 people can be very testing!

By the time the 7 year training period is done, they will be professionals

No. Have another read, they are different questions.
-
What I live about Internet debates - no idea how old the 'debatees' are! It will be hard to convince a 13 year old that forever is forever and 4 people getting along and surviving is incredibly difficult.
-
Have you checked the Mars One road map? The image of 2014 is a picture of Galileo FOCFM1 payload final tests .... But it looked so much like a Mars One comminication satellite! Bit of creative license??
-
Lol! Keep reading on it .... of the 78,000 announced applicants only around 700 had actually completed the process! Good luck future Marsians! Bas will take your money, but won't be joining you. Just so much ammo against this group.

Travel to Mars is certainly possible, no one is disputing that. Mars One is not possible, all the sane people are disputing that.
-
I'm bored now. Where's the next dopey topic?
-
Ok time to jump in here. I think the Mars One Mission is extremely irrelevant in today's times. To have this program ready by 2023 the technology would have to be present now. I don't understand how they can supply a group of people with food, oxygen, water, ect. for 270 days on a spaceship with no return. The ship would have to be massive just to support 4 people.
-
Also, when they arrive on Mars what kind of structure is going to be available for them? And if they are building the camp that will take a very long time in such hostile environment that Mars has. My point is that I don't think this mission will go anywhere and will be forgotten with a short amount of time. If a plan for colonization would come up I don't think it would be possible until 50 to 75 years from now when technology is there. Just my input.

I understand everyone's opinion on Mars one, thanks for the input

Whatever happened to those Russian astronauts that were in a simulation flight to mars for a couple years?

I wonder if the parents of contestants have a say? I'd hate any of my kids to want to leave the planet for good!
-
I heard about something like this recently, but instead of stopping at a planet, they'd send 40 people in a spaceship and just fly out as far as they can, without ever returning. This is actually very similar to mars one. Both voyages are trying to make a self-sustaining environment. Before going out to mars or space to do that, I believe they should first accomplish that feat on earth.
