There is nothing on the internet that is not legit!I'm sorry but this has all of the makings of bullshit.
I am a natural skeptic so when I see something of this magnitude being presented followed by a tab on the website that is selling posters, hoodies, and coffee mugs, I immediately think to myself that there is a sucker born every minute. This has every making of a scam simply created to part a fool from their money.
But what do I know...it's on the Internet so it must be legit.

On a serious note, not to get involved in everyone's hoaxes, conspiracy theories and lack of understanding of science. If given the chance to be one of the first to colonize mars, many of you would choose not to? Enjoy sitting around in your little boxes on earth doing your meaningless jobs, I will take being a modern day pioneer and go down in the history books.
-
Absolutely choose not to, be 1 of 4 in tiny living conditions for 2 years until another 4 people turn up - repeat and rinse every 2 years? The same could be asked of the 'pioneers' - 'enjoy sitting in your small box on Mars doing a similar job?' It wont be that exciting you know, you can't go out and explore, there is nothing to see anyway. I could not imagine anything more dull than be part of a tiny group on a planet with nothing on it, with no where to go, and no chance of seeing the people I left behind.

Small box references the saying that everyone pursues to have nice big houses but in the grand scheme of things they are all just little boxes. The first building on mars will be anything but a little box with this in mind. It will be a historic landmark. Please do explain how being the first settlers on mars would be a meaningless job? They will be responsible for the lives of each other, setting up a human settlement on another planet. A stepping stone to learn how to colonize other planets and god forbid anything happen to earth provide another place for humankind to live. To take all of our eggs out of one basket. The same could be asked of the 'pioneers' - 'enjoy sitting in your small box on Mars doing a similar job?' What do you envisage life to be like for the 4 people on Mars for the first 2 years until another 4 turn up? No prospect of return, 4 people simply cannot have all the skills required to successfully run this.
I think we may well be arguing separate issues anyway. I believe that Mars One is a hoax, nothing more. You seem to be arguing for a concept of pioneership? If so then my argument wont stand, as I don't know what your proposals are. If, on the other hand, you believe Mars One to be viable then I will continue my diatribe! :)

Haven't looked at the mars one site, nor do I wish to. Something as large and new as colonizing a new planet is far too much for a single private corporation to take on. It will take many nations and many corporations working together to take on a mission of such proportions.

You may be right. I took your post to be disregarding previous arguments as to the validity or otherwise of the Mars One proposal and indicating your enthusiasm for the pioneer option held within - and accepting the Mars One pioneer scenario of 4 people for 2 years ...YOU wrote:

If that was not your intention, and I now believe it not to be I apologise for jumping to conclusions.

Whether it is a hoax or not, i dont care, but if they are planning to actually do this by 2025...
Wake the fuck up, yeah?
If they would rename the project to asteroid mining one, i would be more inclined to believe, as to me asteroid mining by the year 2025 seems to be a more realistic goal to achieve, but it would still need an engineering breaktrough to get there.
4people traveling for 2 years in a, ahem, spaceship...
Ill tell you what will happen: none, absolutely no one, not a single person will survive the trip...
They will go crazy/kill eachother, thats just plain and simple human nature. But thank you to make me laugh today, i really needed it.

Just a thought; why don't we send people on MOON first, instead? You know, underground bases, labs, etc?

It would be a waste, their are "bases" on the moon but they are small. That's why it would be a waste. Not big enough to support human life and grow stuff onYOU wrote:

So Mars One is a hoax because it sell merc? Wrong.
Think about that next time you buy a NASA T-Shirt or item. All it does is help fuel the cause. Also, it's not like they are just piking and then launching the people with no training what so ever. There is a 7-year training program for the astronauts.

I wonder if we could FaceTime from Mars..... Damn prolly not!
-
In all seriousness... Who would want to live on Mars? You have any idea how long it would take to plant one single turf?

They only need enough fuel to get out of the atmosphere, once in space there are no forces acting on the ship. No air resistance. The only fuel needed would be to keep it on course. No turning back, they would need a lot of fuel just to get there, to get back would be the suicide mission. Not counting in space madness or whatever it is. They would get tired of seeing each other. Not considering the fuel they would also need water and food lasting up ...

And why aren't they looking at the Fusion Driven Rockets that are in development right now? A trip to mars and back in 210 days including a 30 day layover.... Hmmmm makes we wonder.
-
If we sail west we will fall off the edge of the world...and I always knew that whole Girl Scout thing was a hoax!
-
It's not a hoax. It's real. That's not to say it will be successful. They are, after all, planning to fund the endeavor with a reality TV show in which the candidates are voted on by the public. It may be a pipe dream, but that doesn't make it a hoax. Also, to add some extra (and accurate) information: The trip will take about 270 days. They are taking volunteers, but those volunteers STILL have to pass rigorous physical and mental tests prior to being sent. The selectees will undergo several years of training to prepare. And no shit it's a non-refundable registration fee. Have you ever applied to university? Those fees are non-refundable too. Even if you don't get in.

Fusion power is still a decade off, with the most optimistic guesses. I was reading up on fusion stuff the other day. There is a place called STAF that is trying to develop a minituar molten hydrogen sphere that will supply unlimited energy. But they say it will take them 15 years at least to get it in the beginning stages.
-
I have applied to university, International applications have a fee in Aus, locals don't. If you think it's a goer off you go.
When they don't manage to fund it ..... Oops sorry guys, better luck next mars trip. But thanks for the cash.

Anyone who trusts their lives on the back of a reality tv show. The ultimate show! Hopefully the ratings stay or ...... Mars who? Your space ship built on proceeds from cup sales! Good luck guys.

Then you are extraordinarily easily pleased. But that's ok, the world (and Mars) needs gullible people.

It wouldn't be a very good hoax if it didn't seem real. May suggest before you travel to Mars you all try to assist the poor Nigerian prince who constantly appears to be in financial trouble?

I looked. Too many dudes, not enough hotties. They will end up being well used. And hell, nick will ban you if you try to put turf on mars.
-
Since you've been reading up on fusion the other day, perhaps you could be their propulsion/energy technical lead? I'm not sure what the allure is ....stuck in space on a dead planet, the earth will just be a speck, 4 people who apparently enjoy each others company so much 2 years with just them is fine .... they will also have all the skills required to make a planet habitable. Why not simply hire these people to fix Earth? Or, let them live in a desert in a small hut for a minimum of 2 years and make that habitable, we will then send in another 4 people ....
-
You clearly have no appreciation of astronomy. You have know idea how useful this will be for people on earth?
