Locking someone up indefinitely, without a trial seems very unamerican. And reports of the torture going on there are unsettling, such as playing "deafening" metal music at high volumes while shackling a inmate in a dark room with just a strobe light in the middle seems pretty crazy. But some "inmates" might be too dangerous to let out. Opinions? Points? What are your viewpoints?

Some of the people that are there deserve to be there and whatever it is they get.

There are some here who deserve that treatment, but they get a fair trial because they are a "citizen". I don't think that's fair. We're not better than the rest of the world. Some of the people that are there deserve to be there and whatever it is they get.

It's better than what most Americans suffer at the hands of terrorists.

I missed something here. I saw it go by but didn't catch it, and now I've missed it and it's gone. What have I missed?

The main terrorist groups are in the Middle East right? So I think we should ask the regular citizens of Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.. How they feel about those people being in there. I just think that would be interesting to know

I'm very torn here. First as an American I know I live in a country where I have rights and I'm assumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Some of the people held captive at the prison base in Cuba are there because someone in there "gave up a name" and its assumed they are guilty with zero evidence except for being named. Do we want to feel safe or do we want to show the world we are fair and responsible? We will likely never know what really happens in Guantanamo and I believe if we did we would have a far different opinion.

I think it is inhuman to be blowing up buildings filled with innocent people. Terrorists do not deserve sympathy.

There are people there that have been cleared of any wrongdoing and are awaiting release. And many have been released already over the last couple of years. It's not perfect but I believe it's necessary. There's people in there that should never see the light of day. Hard to sympathize with people who feel that blowing themselves up to kill as many innocent women and children as they can is a good thing. Or ones that just want to see Americans dead. Scum of humanity will never get my sympathy. -

The 5th and 14th amendments to US Constitution establish due process rights of individuals accused of crimes in the US.
Most of the individuals held at Gitmo have not been charged criminally so the due process protections of the Constitution do not apply. They are "enemy combatants" or prisoners of war. In case you haven't noticed, we are still at war. Most sane nations don't remove enemy warriors from the battlefield only to release them back to the battlefield. By the way, this has happened with several former Gitmo inhabitants.
The few individuals held at Gitmo who have been criminally charged are entitled to the due process guaranteed in the Constitution.

The ignorance and amount of brainwashing that happens to Americans is fucking insane. This is why I have almost zero respect for your country. The largest supporter of terrorist activities in the world.

Right back at you and what ever country you live in

I should have stated your two faced corrupt government. Not the general population. Not your fault your country spends more on weapons then the entire world and ignores education.

My country does not ignore eduction, nearly every citizen has a high school level eduction which is more then what most countries have
The government is corrupt but not nearly as bad other countries governments are, for example Mexico's government is being run by the drug cartel right now
We may be spending the most on weapons but at least we are much safer and stronger then most other nations

With the amount the USA spend on Military etc, they could really do an awful lot better than that. -
True but you have to take into consideration that currently there is 196 countries on the world right now

Taking the inmates out of the equation, the existence of the camp is causing a worldwide backlash aimed square at Washington. From a political standpoint it seems to me that Washington keeping this place open will further escalate dissent from Muslim extremists. As for those inmates who have been proven innocent beyond doubt (by American lawmakers) surely it's time to get them out?

There's so many things broken in our system it's hard to know where to begin. Education and healthcare are only the tip of the iceberg. -

Thinking it's unamerican to question America is unamerican. Thinking otherwise makes you a mindless sheep. The fact is the education system is broken in the US. My father in-law is a college English teacher, and believe me when I say students are entering the university systems barely literate. Literally. Our middle class is shrinking, our jobs are being outsourced, and our government spends more time jostling for power than anything. America is a great country, but we have our fair share of major problems also.

On Gitmo: charge or release. This bullshit of keeping ppl locked up in solitary without charging them with anything for 11 years and denying them a fair trial just because you're the world's no. 1 military power needs to end. It's in gross violation of int'l human rights laws.
On the not questioning America part, 415 hit it square on the head. Mindless "sheepism" has increased substantially and is actually one of the hallmarks of a society at war. I've lived through a civil war, trust me on this one. It starts with the "everyone hates us" mentality, followed by intense chest pounding that in turn affects all coherent thought.
Worse trend, ppl are now touting their illiteracy as if it were some kind of Purple Heart. It's not. If you think it is, you're setting yourself up to be bottom feed for the rest of your days.

Those of you who say gitmo is inhumane are stupid. What's inhumane is people who blow other people up just cuz they think they get 70 virgins when they get to heaven. I would much rather have the CIA assassinate or imprison people than have some towel head blow up more Americans
