Guns for home defense
Forums › General Discussion › Guns for home defense-
In your opinion, what do you feel is the best weapon for home defense? We live in a townhouse and have 3 small children between the ages of 6 years old and 4 days old. I don't want something massive and overpowering, yet I want something that will get the job done if the situation presents itself with as low risk to unintended targets as possible. Shotgun or handgun and what types would be good? I'm still doing research yet would also like some input from the TW community.

I forget where the study was done but it came out to say that a pump action shotgun is one of the most recongnizable sounds. (and it can be a very scary sound)

Joe Biden recommends a double barrel shot gun, remember two shots in the air and they run away. 😉.

I have an AK-47 for my home defense but i live in a regular house. From what i hear wheb doing my research is mossberg 500 and the remington 870 are the best shot guns. Use them with bird shot for less pentration. In reality every thing goes through dry wall. -
im not a gun person but in close quarters like a house isnt something like a hand gun better than an assault rifle due to manueverability?

Well this is true, the primary thing is though that you aren't in a gunfight but rather you have the more powerful gun and get it pointed at the offender first. One thing to be wart of is, one of my friends got a shotty for home defense and put it next to his bed, then one night he woke up to a noise he thought he heard of a shotgun pumping, he asked his wife I she heard the sound and she nodded and started to go back to sleep and he grabbed his Gun and pumped and started to get out of bed, his wife stopped him and told him the sound was made by him in his sleep... Also he woke in a later situation to a sound downstairs, he grabbed the gun and went to the stairs got all set up and was ready to dash down when his daughter came up the stairs,im not a gun person but in close quarters like a house isnt something like a hand gun better than an assault rifle due to manueverability?

He finally decided he was to trigger happy for this to work and placed it in a better spot so he wouldn't be grabbing it at first awakening but rather able to think a little first.

I'd go with a hand gun if you'll take the time to learn to use it. Take a course. It will be better for close quarters of your home. Also a rifle isn't convenient to grab from a safe in a situation, because with three kids, u WON'T be leaving your weapon out. I keep my 9mm in a small safe in my night stand.

I applaud you for taking the responsibility for the safety of your family and asking questions about doing it right. Pm me if I can be any help.

I would get a pump or semi shotgun. I have a break shotgun under my bed kinda like a double barrel but its single shot so nobody gets a warning shot.
-
Kimber .45 handgun
-
If you go with a handgun make sure to go with a .45. 9mm are faster, higher velocity rounds and are more likely to pass through someone. And the wall behind them. .45 will hit and stay inside the body. Glock 21 is an awesome all around gun IMO and durable as hell.

Either a 12G or a bedside pistol.Make sure you run through every possible home invasion Scenario with your family. Also make sure you know all the safe shooting lanes through your home so if a round was to pierce a wall a neighbor or a family member will not be hit. And most importantly make sure your wife learns how to operate and access whatever weapon you buy.
I have taught many people right way to defend their home. Kind of like a hobby for me. -
I have a little bit of this & a little bit of that in my house for protection (everything from 12 gauge to latex condoms). Before I had kids in my house I would grab a handgun, but now I do fear over penetration of a bullet; my goal is their safety after all. I now keep a 12 gauge pump well out of their reach in my closet loaded with several bird shot, then ending with #4 buckshot. It holds 8 so why not, right? I really would reccomend adding a flashlight to what ever you decide on. Shadows in your home are terrible things to be shooting at. Make sure you have the light to clearly identify what went bump in the night.

How many of you are prepared to actually shoot someone, possibly taking their life and dealing with the consequences afterwards? Let's just talk home break in, not a clear life threatening situation.
It sounds like many think using a gun is the first choice reaction. Shouldn't it be the last line of defense? In home situations, do you know where the bullet will go if you miss? Through what wall? At night, do you have a flashlight to positively id your target so you don't shoot your kid, wife or dog? Pump shotguns - unless trained, most people will forget to pump after the first shot. You don't have a weapon to scare people, you have a weapon to shoot them. Anyone thinking they can flash their gun at a burglars to scare them away needs to rethink that idea. If I'm in your house and you point a gun at me, I'm going to want to shoot your ass before you shoot mine. If I don't have a gun, I'd run away, but I know where you live, I've been in your place, and I can come back to mess up your shit any time I want. -

The Far Side has a point. Most of us aren't trained to use a fireweapon in an unclear, potentially threatening situation.
Myself, I have a bo-ken (kind of sword) and a quarterstaff in my bedroom. I'm trained to use them, will too to defend my children. As for posessions: replacable. Let the cops deal with that, I'm not going to risk my families life over a television. -

Ah yes the "do nothing and let the cops sort it" mentality. Since obviously someone isn't in their right mind in the first place or they wouldn't be breaking into someone's home. I'll protect the children with the bo-ken if neccesary, but I'm not going to fight someone most likely to be trained much better for a computer.

I don't want to kill anyone, but if you come into my house, I have go assume it's with bad intentions. Period. With that said, here's my recommendations.
A shotgun works great for HD. As said above, a Moss 500 or a Rem 870 are both great, very customizable, and work well in close quarters. They're also relatively cheap these days. For handguns, I prefer a .40 with HP rounds. Realistically, anything from a 9mm to a .45 will be fine, as long as it's a dependable model that you are comfortable with. Just make sure to use hollow point rounds to avoid over-penetration through walls (and for maximum stopping power).
I will say you may want to consider models with rails so they can equip a light. In a dark house, waking up, having that light on your HD gun can be big.

Seriously... Whatever weapon you choose make sure you take a defense course and practice your scenario's regularly. That is key.
-
Is it the type of round used or the type of gun that determines the penetration?
I'm on board with 415 in the aspect that I don't wish to kill anyone, yet if you are in my home it's with bad intentions. My families safety is my TOP priority. If there is an intruder I will kill them to protect my family.
You guys have a lot of great suggestions. The mossberg 500 sounds great if I can get it with a short barrel, but I'm concerned that it might be too much gun for my petite wife to handle.
A .380 was suggested for my wife, any thoughts? -
Home protection with handgun the round, not the caliber judges penetration. .380 is a little light but effective if placement is right. In the dark or high stress quantity is suggested. Highest cap avail.
My wife likes 9mm. Another woman I know is a dead shot with her .40. It all depends. -

Screaming at the bad guys to get out of your house could work, but good to have a weapon in hand in case they come at you instead of leaving. I have a small 110 lumen flashlight on the nightstand, it's the first thing I'd grab. A .380, if it's a small gun, is not very accurate over any distance. Trigger pull is fairly strong, you can't shoot quickly which is both good and bad - less likely to make a mistake but you lose in response time. Most gunfights take place very quickly at very short range - one tactical instructor told our class 3 shots in 3 seconds at 3 feet, but I've read a couple shots at 6 feet in a few seconds as well.

I feel like a 20 gauge shotgun is enough for hime defense. Think about it, if you break into a house then hear a loud pump sound from upstairs chances are you sh*t your pants and leave.
