Guns for home defense

If a Mossy 500 is too much for your wife, she can try a 20 gauge. Rent a few at a range and see what she's comfortable and most accurate with.
Caliber (among other things) determines penetration, but most FMJ rounds will travel through walls, making them dangerous for HD use. That's why it's really important you use only HP rounds, which have a far less chance of over-penetrating.

In a perfect world yeah. Some times there are home invasions that consist of multiple armed people. Be safe.I feel like a 20 gauge shotgun is enough for hime defense. Think about it, if you break into a house then hear a loud pump sound from upstairs chances are you sh*t your pants and leave.

Some lawmaker in Colorado advised women to piss at shit themselves if confronted by a potential rapist. I thought that was sound advice, not just for women but men as well, so ever since anytime I have even the least amount of concern for my, or my family's safety, I planned to piss and shit myself.
Then the other day my said, "what if I drew down on the intruder with one of our pistols and make that bastard piss and shit himself."
I'm so glad my wife brought me back to reason.

It's fake, but a good read.

To the ones who suggested home defense rounds that was a valid point. If your worried about wall penetration get home defense rounds. They make ammo just for this instance with low penetration.

Anyone who is worried about getting in trouble for killing an intruder is stupid. Most states have laws that state if somebody is doing something illegal on your property you are allowed to hurt them.Bottom line, would you rather spend a night in jail or be dead and your family dead?

Probably the best advice I've read. Someone that knows what they are doing would be more effective with a BB gun than someone who picked up a mossberg 590 and has never shot it.Seriously... Whatever weapon you choose make sure you take a defense course and practice your scenario's regularly. That is key.
With that said I like handguns. I've got a 9mm in my night stand. It's cheap enough (when I could buy ammo) I can stay proficient with it, and I don't have anywhere I could go shooting a shotgun. It's a no brainier for me and my situation. Your situation will be different.

I keep a sawed off 12 gauge pump and a bolt action 30.06 rifle by my bed. If they're out in my driveway, they'll get picked off. If they come in the house, it will get messy.

That's what I have, a hand-me-down pump action shotgun. Thanks Pops! Anyway, if anyone breaks in, the sound should do it... Plus I'll be yelling all full of adrenaline... If not, it's hard to miss at close range, say in a hallway or bedroom. I'm no expert, but i think a pistol would require much more practice than a shotgun.I forget where the study was done but it came out to say that a pump action shotgun is one of the most recongnizable sounds. (and it can be a very scary sound)

What I think is a good idea is a handgun, 9mm to .45, but use rubber bullets instead of real ones. Knocks em out good, less threat of killing a family member, and you don't have to deal with the burden of killing a person if you use them. (most of the time)
-
Rubber bullets? I've spent a lot of time staring into ammo cases (empty ones these days), but have never seen a rubber bullet, lol.
Oh and bug consideration for your firearm is choosing one you can actually obtain ammo for. It's true 9mm has seemed to dry up completely. -

Yeah that's great if you're looking to spend $800-$1000 on a handgun. Agreed Kimber makes the finest .45 caliber handgun in the world. But not everyone is looking to spend on what a Kimber costs.A7X✭SaveMe✭A7X wrote:

.12 Guage shotgun shell full of rock salt to the face. That will stop them, not kill them, but f them up.

1911 for home defense? I have nothing against a 1911, they are incredible pieces of engineering, and works of art as well. I would love to own a Kimberly or Wilson combat. But to take 8 rounds into a fight when I could have 12-17 in an easier to operate, more reliable and less expensive package. No thank you.Scarbutt wrote:

Yea you definitely have to get use to shooting make it an instinct for you to pump the gun your using my favorite fun to shoot is a 12g over under but if you looking for protection go with a Remington 870 12g pump and if I would recommend a shell use buckshot because if you are prepared to shoot someone do it in the first shot a buckshot will have less return fire if you don't kill them they will def be injured put either a flashlight on or paint the bead on the front of it orange if you go with a pistol get a tarsus .370 it is loud but it is smaller and easy to use and control and your wife could easily hold/carry it

I have been looking for a self defense weapon myself. And what I've heard is that a handgun caliber has fair to little stopping power. So any caliber handgun from 9mm to .45 is ok. It kind of depends on shot placement. getting shot in the chest hitting the lungs is more lethal than getting shot in the arm or leg. If the gun is comfortable, reliable, and you can handle the recoil go for it.
For a shotgun, it has a good stopping power and the recoil has a kick. Your wife might have a problem with the recoil but there are different variation. The 20g should have less power and recoil than the 12g but can still take down the intruder.
Assault rifle has an over power stopping power. The bullet can go through the wall and possibly hit an innocent person if you live in an apartment.
-
Revolvers are said to have less malfunctions than handguns. The caliber are anything from .380 to .45 magnum. And has 5-7 rounds compare to the handgun 8-17 rounds
In home defense I think a shotgunIs good because it has a good stopping power. A handgun is also good. It has low stopping power but if you get a good placement shot the intruder is down.
-
It's all a trade off between power, ease of use, and cost. At the end of the day any firearm will better than nothing. Just choose one that fits you and your needs. Then get some training and a lot of practice. It's a lot of fun and prepares you for the extremely unlikely events.

And "take 8 rounds into a fight?" Wtf. We're not talking about going into a gun fight. Do you normally get broken into by a large gang of thieves? If so I recommend moving.
If you can't put down one burglar in your living room with less than 8 shots you have no business shooting that gun in the first place. -
.40 cal S$W with HP. 17 in the clip and I am good with it! And to answer the question above, I am very prepared to use it.
-
Grim,
All I'm saying is in the extremely unlikely event that someone breaks into my house I want to stack the deck in my favor any way I can. From leaving a small light on in the kitchen to carrying a bright flash light, and yes, carrying the largest mag that will fit in the gun I own.
8 should do the trick. 2 should do the trick as well. But what if I were to miss in the dark, or have bad hits that don't stop the threat. Then what if there are a few people working together. All else being equal, give me more rounds. We're talking home defense, not carry guns, a little bulk is fine.
And that's a perfect example of finding the gun that fits your needs and wants. Everyone is different and to each their own.
-
Well, I own multiple hand guns for hobby and home protection. The particular gun of choice for myself is a 9mm semi auto with 17 round mag. I keep it loaded and locked in a small digital safe in my bedroom. As others have said the only way that a gun is going to help protect your family is if you 1. know how to use the firearm 2. have a plan if someone does enter you home 3. practice that plan with your family including your children.
In my conceled weapon class they made it clear that just as important as having a weapon at all was having a plan and your family knowing the plan.
WITH THAT SAID THE ABOVE IS NOT MY FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE FOR HOME INTRUDERS.
My Suggestion to all interested in protecting your family is a dog. My 55 lb pitbull will not only alert me an intruder is attempting to come into my house but will also act as a buffer for me to clear my thoughts and begin my plan of home defense. A good Dog for home protection 1st and formost!

NWO is closer to happening than ever before. Better stock up on 🔫's now because one of the main obstacles in the way of the NWO from taking place is U.S. sovereignty.
