What is the best way to learn a foreign language?
Forums › General Discussion › What is the best way to learn a foreign language?-
I would like to learn languages and for future reference, would like to have this thread as a way to figure out how best to take on a new language. Also, being raised with the language isn't much of an option anymore and moving to the country isn't something that's too realistic either. Visiting is a possible one but other suggestions would be helpful.

Typically to immerse yourself in the language. That's how you learn your first language. Now I would probably say there is some great online stuf if your willing to spend the money. It also depends on the language, like I'm learning to speak Afrikaans so I can speak in private with my family

1) Move to a country where the language you want to learn is spoken.
2) Find a suitable person to begin a romantic relationship with, it helps if they speak little of your native language, have him/her teach you their language. -

Yeah, I don't mean like learning 7 or more languages but maybe Spanish, German and maybe one more that fall under those groups.UnknownAssassin wrote:

School post-grad just for the language

Once you've started learning the basics, a good way to immerse yourself is to watch films you know quite well translated into the language. Video games too, if they have lots of cut scenes

There are ways to get it for cheaper. Specials they run. I might still have a code for discount from ours. You can get all 5 levels in any language for $350 with the special. Let me know if interested and ill check.deadly dml wrote:

Being on a deserted island with someone that knows very little english helps. 😉 literally

Reading translations of books you know very well is good too. I (long ago) used to read The Lord of the Rings every year, so reading them in German was not too bad at all.

My mate learnt Japanese by moving to Japan. He said after 3 months he could pretty much understand it all and after a year could speak fluent Japanese.

Just play turf wars all day. Education is overrated these days.

To learn Chinese my parent made me attend summer school in Chinatown NY.
Made a few friends and actually expanded my knowledge of the language. I sucked at first but it takes practice and discipline.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is Rosetta Stone good though? I've seen the commercials but never talked to anyone I knew who used it.

It is remarkable, worth every penny! We bought German for ourselves as a Xmas gift. It uses a mic so it can help you pronounce correctly along with the pictures, to show you what the words are depicting, it also says the words so you can hear and read it. IMO best language system out there for fast learning. It also comes with iPhone/iPad apps to help learn on the go.Thanks for the suggestions. Is Rosetta Stone good though? That's convient. Listening to that while playing TW haha (I wish but not likely). What is the price on it though and where would I go to get it?UnknownAssassin wrote:

The best way to get it is thru the specials, and thru the website. Usually runs just under $500 for all 5 tiers. But with the special sale you can get it for $350, and by doing it thru the website and not a place like staples or Barnes n noble you can break it up into 5 payment of $70 no interest and they ship the second it's ordered. I'll check thru my stuff to see if I still have the discount offer handy. Otherwise check the site during major holidays.

Okay thanks. I'll keep the deals in mind for when a holiday comes around. And how long does it usually take to learn if you spend like an hour or two a night learning from the CDs to learn the language you ordered? The best way to get it is thru the specials, and thru the website. I'm fluent in five that are all from different families and I can tell you, Rosetta stone will NOT teach you how to speak a language. It'll give you exposure to vocabulary, which is essential, but fluency is not what you can expect. Here are some free and more realistic options:
1. Podcasts. Check out iTunes store. Lots of ppl are offering free weekly or biweekly content, sometimes even video. Fun, amazing, mostly free. -
2. Get Pimsleur method CDs for your chosen language and listen to these at the gym, in the car etc. will teach you how to think in the language.
3. Anki. It's a flash card software you can get for your PC and then load (again, free) sets of words.
4. Online radio. My favorite. Use TuneIn to channel into a country's radio station and leave the thing on for hours. You will be amazed by what immersion can do.
