What are your opinions on this disorder ~ real or a real joke?
Before you jump to any conclusions about this thread I have a son that is diagnosed with add, he takes vyvance daily, while I didn't want to put him on medication the schools were relentless to blame him for numerous outbursts in class. I have my own theories which I will share later on. What's your opinion? -
ADD children and adults all across the world are being diagnosed with this, I have been diagnosed as well, as I'm sure a lot of Tw players have also. I admit I had some childish ways before the medication but I'm wondering is it just me? Is it almost illegal these day and ages to have a youthful side? I feel a lot calmer on the medication but the side effect is Im not playful anymore I'm just stuck at one level, when I get to doing anything it becomes obsessive and I can't stop until hours later I snap out of it, it's crazy.
-
I probably have this ... I do have a few childish outbursts every now and then... But is that really a disorder? Why not a part of my personality?
-
Childish how?

adhd seems to be a scapegoat for some parents' inability to discipline their child, and thereafter an excuse not to: "sorry, chemicals in the brain, see?" as a child destroys time consuming displays. i do believe it's a true disorder, particularly when coupled with autism etc. but it is possibly being over diagnosed, and i think management is key, rather than medications
-
Based on some kids I've met I believe it is a very real thing. There are some kids out there that absolutely do need medication to function.
At the same time there is absolutely misdiagnosis. It happens with all kinds of afflictions, but I'd imagine add/ADHD is overdiagnosed more frequently than other problems.
I don't work with kids, nor am I a doctor so I couldn't really say.

I have been struggling with this debilitating disease all of my life. I wasn't a mean kid when I was younger, but I didn't give a shit about anything. All of this changed when I discovered the miracle drug called Ritalin. I went from special Ed to child prodigy. I won science fairs, learned how to play multiple instruments, and read every book in the library. I am now in college studying electrical engineering.

Maybe it's just where I live, when the teachers would complain it was tollerable and controllable in my eyes, not neccesarily my sons fault, I'm talking about the smallest things like touching other kids during group while they sit and play games he's a child for god sake, but now that he's been on Meds so long (yrs) when he misses for a few days then he gets uncontrollable because he has become so used to taking the Meds his body has adjusted I guess. I just look back when I was a child and we were all hyper but the teachers knew how to calm us down, now it just seems like they have 0 tolerance or patience with our children.

It's a joke, I'm not going to defend my point as it has come with years of research and experience. I recommend if you are interested in the subject, look into where it is diagnosed the most and when it first came about. I accept that there is some form of disorder, I just believe it is a natural personality trait that can be taught to cope with as opposed to drugging a massive percent of the youth. Kind of strange how the majority of kids being diagnosed are all in the USA no?

I've had ADD and ADHD since I was a kid. I still struggle with adult ADD actually. It's just something you learn to live with. Childhood was difficult at times but I got through thanks to parents with patience and understanding.

This, the list for ADHD is massive and you only need three "symptoms" to be givens medication. I think if kids had better/more structured raising the majority of them wouldn't have a problem. I do believe some need help to balance out certain chemicals in the brain, but the amount of kids given this shit is a joke. It's a joke, I'm not going to defend my point as it has come with years of research and experience. Here seems I was a little wrong. It's six symptoms.

And those things are packed full of fluoride to "calm" you down. I think the majority of claims are BS. I have had so many of those symptoms, i still procrastinate hardcore, but I worked and sat through the symptoms. I didn't get up and run around, I learned to wait till the question was done being asked before answering. And most of the symptoms went away, I just wasn't popped onto a drug plan right away and left as a "zombie". But i think it goes back to bad parenting again like so many other problems the youth face.

I can live with my ADD, but I wouldn't be able to function on the level that I do now. Go to the noisiest train you can find, sit next to it, and read the most boring book that you can find. My son has recently been diagnoses with ADD, this is on top of his cp and deafness. To be honest we thought he was autistic, as this seems to run in the family.
I have an apprentice at work diagnosed with ADHD, and to be honest, he is just like an annoying teen, unable to open his mouth to speak, unable to construct a coherent sentence, or pick his feet up when he walks.
Personally I think that ADD/ADHD is over diagnosed, not that it doesn't exist, but that it is too easy to label a child. -
I assure you, it is real and medication helps those not misdiagnosed. Unfortunately, medication is trial and error. If it helps you have ADD. If it doesn't you are prescribed a different one.

So I dont need to raise any children i have because if they become to much I can drug them? I agree with the part that it helps when they actually have it. But any kid who has energy+bad parenting is gonna look like he has it. And once in these drugs he'll be more docile and show "improvement"If it helps you have ADD. If it doesn't you are prescribed a different one.

My GF's young cousin was on pills. Shitty parenting and he ran around and got in trouble. Seeing him at holidays on pills he was more quiet, and sat still. He was like a zombie though, he wasnt himself. Now he is off them and he has some places where he gets some control and has a place to talk and he is much better except he isn't a frickin zombie. The same family has an older sister they pumped full of pills and she moved out and got on illegal drugs now she cleaned her life up, got her GED and has a boyfriend with a job and a house. Those pills messed those kids up bad.

I started taking Adderall when in college when I actually was challenged in school. I was able to focus and actually retain information. Forgot to take my meds one night at work and it was the worst night ever. I walked out of patients rooms because I remembered I had forgotten something, had to make 2 and 3 trips to patients rooms because I forgot medications, would forget what I was saying, and would lose my line of thought at the drop of a hat. Couldn't focus on ANYTHING because there was SO MUCH going on. Took meds late one night and report was horrible because I kept hearing everything everyone else was saying and couldn't focus on the day nurse and what she was telling me.
I say it is real. My parents were strict too when I was a child. I did ok in school until college where I couldn't just skate by with a B- average. -
ADHD can be caused by a zinc mineral deficiency! Nutritional therapists have done loads of research and have proved that supplementing zinc will help drastically! Also be careful, people have been diagnosed with ADHD but actually have bipolar!
Personally I'm with maverick on this! I have family members with ADHD, it's rubbish! -
Have to say I'm a bit of a sceptic on this one, yes maybe a small percentage of people diagnosed do have a issue but it just seems too easy to put too many people in to this bucket and then zombify them, so of course there appears to be an improvement in behaviour.
I personally believe some is social engineering (not bad parenting as it is not that simple), some related to less tolerance of anything out of the norm, aggression/attention lapses etc
In my day if I lost interest in a class (which would happen frequently) I would day dream and no one would notice - I would argue I'd be less inclined to day dream if the subject/lesson (whatever) was more interesting.
Kids nowadays aren't actually allowed to do anything cause of health and safety etc etc so of course most stuff is boring/not exciting and without a little excitement sure most people would lash out /show a lack of interest occasionally ...
-
Anyway put these kids in to something they like doing (be it sports/ gaming/interesting education) and some structure and boundries then I'm sure most would be model students
Anyway just my humble /simpleton opinion

Someone once tried to tell me my kid had ADD. I said "Fuck you, asshole, she's 4!"
I didn't pay attention to jack shit in high school. Schools are geared for the average. Dumb or smart people are largely ignored. I had the highest ACT and SAT scores of my graduating class, but finished in the bottom half of the class ranking. Maybe if I had been pumped full of benzedrine I would have focused more on shit that was beneath me, but I'm glad I was left alone. Once I was able to learn things that were challenging and interesting, I excelled. Maybe some people really do have problems, but my kids won't be taking drugs, and that's all I can say for sure about it.
