I have ADD. It sucks. I have to take a total of 130.1mg of add pills a day and I don't feel any different. When I don't take it though, I get really hyper and impulsive, which is weird because I don't have ADHD.

My grades in school correlated directly with the times I was on Ritalin. When I was on, never had a grade below 95% in any class and stayed out of trouble.
When I was off, I barely passed and was always in trouble.
ADD and ADHD are absolutely real things. If you believe that they are not then you have either never had to deal with it, or are mistakenly making an assumption that said person is always like that.
Now, being an adult, I still struggle with several things, especially when it comes to my memory. Some things I can see or hear once and never forget, whereas others, I could be told a thousand times and forget it the next instant.
I do believe that while ADD and ADHD are real, medication for them should be used on a minimal basis, and that the sufferer should be instructed through counseling and education on ways that they can deal with their issues outside of medication.

Many in my family deal with ADD. And the "bad parenting" angle has been floated more than once. I think it's important to remember that even if your child is 18 as opposed to 8 or younger, you are constantly learning about them and how to parent them. That's a constant thing. Add other difficulties to that and I'd really like to see the "good parent" version, LOL. Also, as a parent, you decide what is best for your child in the end. You know them best and you can tell better than anyone whether or not a medication is beneficial or just squashing them flat. Teachers and administrators are not doctors. They do often categorize children. They are also right in some cases. But just as often, you can work with your child to change behaviours and talk to them about medications and decide if they're necessary. We can't just pigeon hole our kids because they just happen to fit there. They need to actually belong there.

Im 28 yrs old and was diagnosed with add when i was 16, i took my pills for a yr maybe 2 and then gave it up. The results were great, i had much improved grades and wasnt in much trouble any more but i stoped taking my pills because i couldnt handle the migrain headaches at night as i was comming down off the medication. as an "adult" i want a lower dosage because as of late i can hardly sleep because my mind goes wild as soon as i lay down and i have trouble focussing on important tasks for work / daily life and it feels as though my memory is depleting at a scary rate. Dunno if this helps but just my 2cents...
