  It's an easy mistake. Hyena's are there own separate family to Felines and Canines. They have a closer genetic link to felines however behaviors such as catching food with teeth as opposed to claws is more of a canine trait. There are even members of the Hyena family referred to as dog-like Hyena's hence the ease of confusion.
