...to call your congressperson or senator.
As you might know, the US already has some of the weakest privacy laws in the developed world, meaning law enforcement can vacuum up your emails without a warrant or notice. The Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), passed in 1986, already allows this, but its enforcement has always been shaky.
A recent bill to update the ECPA to protect us against these kind of privacy violations has instead been turned into an even more draconian piece of legislation.
Under this proposed amendment, any online communication, including email, Facebook posts, forum posts, cloud backups, and private messages can be acquired by more than 22 Federal agencies, with no warrant or prior notice required. In fact, service providers (like us) will be required to get permission from the government to even tell you your data was scraped, and they will be able to delay those requests for up to a year.

There's a protection against unlawful searches that pre-dates the Constitution – it's called a warrant, and if this law passes then it'll become as quaint as a Writ of Royal Decree. The only safe place to keep your electronic information safe from government fishing expeditions will be under your mattress.
The good news is that this bill is still in its early stages. Please contact your senator as soon as possible to let them know that you won't tolerate your data being exposed without the protection of a warrant.

Glad I'm not in the US, although they can still read my messages in the UK I'm sure.
Politics gone mad.
I'm sure if they wanted too, they could get it anyway, so why bother taking it to the next step..?

Typical American BS.
Just because we are a target by terrorists doesn't mean they get to treat us like we are all terrorists. -

This has been happening for a while under the NSA (Google "Room 641A" to learn about AT&T's San Francisco office that was dedicated to assist NSA spying, exposed by an NSA whistleblower). But now you won't have to be an alleged terrorist.I'm sure if they wanted too, they could get it anyway, so why bother taking it to the next step..?
What this law does is codify it as national policy for dozens of other agencies. Now instead of requiring national security-level importance (i.e. impending terrorist attack etc), many garden-variety Federal agencies will be officially permitted to harvest citizens' online data without a warrant.

SOPA and PIPA failed because thousands of people mobilized and contacted their congress members – before that happened these bills were nearly guaranteed passage.
Democracy isn't guaranteed – you don't have to read much US history to see how much work it's taken to keep authoritarianism at bay.

Oh they can fish for us too fellow Brit. The only other obstacle for the US if they deem any of our online content to be in violation, is persuading our very own William Hague to extradite us. If he thinks we would look good in an orange jumpsuit, then we'd be on the next AA flight out of heathrow. ✈Glad I'm not in the US, although they can still read my messages in the UK I'm sure.

Perhaps instead of.telling people what to do, you should just provide the information and let them decide. A bit unprofessional.

Well that was quick!
After public criticism of proposal that lets government agencies warrantlessly access Americans' e-mail, Sen. Patrick Leahy says he will "not support" such an idea at next week's vote.

Off topic. There is an NDAA every year and just because it also has 4 letters doesn't mean it's remotely related. Let's focus on real threats to our privacy instead of Alex Jones paranoid propaganda. Make a thread or PM me if you want to discuss NDAA and Obama's signing statement condemning indefinite detention.💀༄्ཧ़ཀंེབ།༨ཛყ༄💀 wrote:

As a police officer I strongly advise that everyone look up their constitutional rights and study them! A lot of people do not do this!

Is there a petition anywhere against this?

I think the mods might delete this thread, seems pretty controversial😉😝
