Hi guys and gals! I'm looking to pick up a new handgun and don't really have much knowledge of the handgun market these days. I've got a couple handguns but nothing I'm sentimentally or emotionally attached to like I am my mak-90 or Mrs. Mossberg. I've looked at a Ruger S9 and a sig saur tac tec. I've considered the beretta M9 also. I'm not a big fan of glocks so I'll probably stay clear of them. I'd like to keep it under $800 and have 17 round capacity (will settle for 15 but no less) if you have a favorite handgun, please tell me about it and why it is. I'll let you guys know what I pick. Thanks for your help!

Springfield XDM. Mine is in .40. I love it on every level. Great capacity, great ergonomics, as reliable as a glock but fits my hand better. Comm me if you have any specific questions.

Desert eagle - I got one on Call of Duty 😏

Nowadays, with ammo prices, caliber may be your first factor. Can you afford $20-25 a box for .45, or is $12-14 more your range for 9mm? Also, do you want a revolver or a pistol? Is it for home defense or target shooting? And finally, do you prefer a polymer gun or a metal gun? Answer these questions and we'll be better able to recommend you something.

I was gonna stay with 9mm probably because I already have ammo for the s&w. I would prefer a pistol for capacity reasons. It is for both defense and recreational shooting. I'm not sure as to polymer or metal. Probably metal....but I've never looked into pro/cons of which is better...Nowadays, with ammo prices, caliber may be your first factor. Try the smith and wesson bodyguard 380. It's a nice small weapon(good for concealing and personal defense considering it has a laser as well) and the ammo prices aren't that bad as well.

There are no pros & cons of metal vs. polymer - it's really just a personal preference of feel and weight.
Ok, so here are my recommendations, then. For Polymer in your price range, you can't go too wrong with a Springfield XD, Glock 17, M&P 9 or a Sig P229. Ideally, you'll rent a few and see which feels best in your hand. Otherwise, all the above are great, dependable guns.
In metal, I'd strongly recommend a Beretta 92FS or a CZ 75. Of those two, I like the CZ better, but I'm not sure it holds 17 (the ones I've shot were 14). Either way, they're both great guns.

415 gave some solid advice. I own the xd, xdm, m&p, in .40 & the sig p239 in 9mm. I like the 19 + 1 that the xdm offers in 9mm. The m&p feels good in the hand too, but isn't quite as simple as the xd family. My wife likes the sig the best. My xd is the sub-compact. Holds 9 +1 in .40 but if you carry the full size magazine capacity increases.

I just went and looked at the Springfield XDM. I really like the 19+1 and the angry look to it.

What ever you get make sure it fires NATO rounds.

Just looked and CZ does make a 18+1 9mm pistol: the CZ75 SP-01. It should run around $625. I definitely recommend the XD above, but make sure to handle the Beretta and the CZ at a shop. I love the grip and extra weight of the metal CZ and Beretta.

I have glock 21

The Glock is a well designed firearm - any particular reason you're against it?
If you already have 9mm ammo laying around, give the Smith M&P .9 a try - it was modeled after the Glock. It holds 17+1 and it comes with three different grips. It's also a very reliable gun. My favoite part of the M&P (and not all models have this option, and
people will disagree with me here) is the magazine safety. If you the magazine is not fully engaged, the firing mechanism will not release and the gun will no fire, even if you have a round chambered. It's an actual safety, unlike Glock's "trigger safety" (lol). The only con is it has one extra step to take it apart to clean it.

When glocks first hit the consumer market I bought one (a glock17 I believe) it was inaccurate, clumsy, and felt like a toy gun. I've never been impressed with glocks and since mainstream gangster rappers swear by it as a pop culture fad, I've just never given them a second chance....
I'm sure they have come a long way in the last 20years, but it's a mental stigmata for me I think.....

How about the walther p90?

Or the Walther P99Q....

Anything anyone says should be taken with a grain of salt as a gun is a very personal thing just like a pair of shoes.
I have shot and really like the m&p 9c and full size. It shoots great, fits my hands well (but with the changeable grips it fits nearly anyone) has great sights, great reputation. It's just hard not to like. My next purchase is going to me an m&p shield, but that is not what you are looking for.
Glock makes a good gun, if you just don't like them "because" that's cool, but they are good guns.
One thing you should absolutely consider is the availability of parts and accessories. You want something you can buy a holster and mags for without a lot of trouble. Again, another benefit to a glock. You can buy mags all day long dirt cheap, every holster manufacturer supports them.

I carry a taurus millennium pro in 9mm. It's an inexpensive gun, not the smoothest shooting gun out there but after about 1,500 rounds it has been 100% reliable. And frankly the smoothness of simething like the m&p would be lost on a new shooter. Taurus makes a good gun and isn't too expensive. Look into the 24/7 as well

My carry is sig p229 in 9mm. I think is solid firearm. Small enough to carry and conceal easily.
-
Just carry around an M4 on your back

They have the springfield XDM for $615 with the case, two 18rnd mags cleaning kit and holster
They also have a Ruger SR9 with case, holster, two 17rnd mags, and interchangeable grips.
I have an appointment to go shoot some glocks after work tomorrow because I like to stay open minded and it seems as if you guys give them high marks.
(I'm still leaning towards the XDM. High capacity, nice weight/full size isn't too heavy and It looks the most pissed off 😡)

All good picks. Really smart to actually go shoot them. Glocks are a solid gun, I just prefer others. The angle between the slide and handle makes it naturally aim high for me. The xd is a more natural angle. It is all just personal preference. Hold as many as you can & practice bringing them up to eye level to see which feel best. If you are going to a range that rents guns, try several. It is far cheaper to rent a few to try them out head to head than to buy one you aren't 100% happy with. Have fun shooting & keep us posted.

I got a sig p250 about 6 months ago. What is cool is that you can make it go from a 40 short to a 9 mm long from a sub compact to a full size all with same trigger mechanism. Right now I have it as a subcompact 40. Thinking about buying barrel and grips for a 9mm

Ive owned literally dozens of various handguns. Used to be a full blown glock guy until i put my hands on a S&W M&P9. Comfortable, Ridiculous accuracy,hi capacity and just as durable as a glock. They are based off a previous SW design called "sigmas" that glock sued them over. Hence the MP was born. Trust me.SW MP9 all the way brother.
-
I do like the s&w 915 that I have. The MP didn't strike me as that impressive looking until I saw pics of gun hogs. Guess ill have to put some rounds through that one tomorrow as well! I've been reading up a bit tonight and I'm leaning a little more towards metal over polymer.......your guys thoughts?
-
Told you, metal vs. polymer is strictly personal choice. Buy which one feels most comfortable and balanced in your hand. Or, better yet, rent a few and buy the one you shoot best with.
-
I'd definitely recommend the RB or the LB - Right bicep and Left bicep.
-
I'd caution you against the sr9. I have a good friend that has one, not a bad gun, he loves it, but I find it to be awkward to shoot and I really don't like the trigger reset or the mag release. It is the only gun I have ever shot that dropped a mag on me unintentionally. Not to say its bad, but I really dislike rugers.
They as a company also supported Clinton's assault weapon ban if you need another reason.
I think you have your answer from people here, go with the m&p.
-
I really like the S&W M&Ps. I don't own one (yet). I have to think if a convincing argument to bring up with the CFO.
I shot the 9mm and .40 varients, They shoot like a dream. I like the trigger and the ergonomics better than the Glock. It's built in the U.S. as well.
