I saw this math problem on Facebook and couldn't believe that so many people were getting it wrong and then insulted anyone that disagreed with their answer. Lets hope that the turf wars community is smarter than the majority of the Facebook users.

A) 1
B) 82
C) 41 -

It depends on the precedence of calculation. In general one would assume C(41) but the answer could quite equally be A(1) or 80 or 81. The only definitive answer would be if adequate bracketing were to be used. Any other MISRA C programmers here?

Ahhh much better then my best guess is (using algabra) since there is no sign in between (40+40) and 0+1 you automatically add it so it is [(40+40)+0+1] using this you can clearly see the that the answer can only be 81 which would mean that none of the answers above are correct unless this is a trick question and/or they are not giving us the whole equation

Just because you assume MDAS precedence is "correct", doesn't make it so.

Plus, in fairness to me, sixth grade math class was the most recent education I've had. And that was well over 40-20^0 years ago. -

Bedmas, bedmas , whatever you call it is a recent "invention" for solving long equations.
If you give me forty quid, a friend gives me 40 quid, I, stupidly, bet forty quid on a horce whith stakes 1 to 0 (if I win, for every quid I gave them I get 0), and then another friend gives me one quid, how much cash have I got?

Then what is C? -
1 = 2!!!
Step 1: Let a=b.
Step 2: Then a^2 = ab,
Step 3: a^2 + a^2 = a^2 + ab,
Step 4: 2 a^2 = a^2 + ab,
Step 5: 2 a^2 - 2 ab = a^2 + ab - 2 ab,
Step 6: and 2 a^2 - 2 ab = a^2 - ab.
Step 7: This can be written as 2 (a^2 - a b) = 1 (a^2 - a b),
Step 8: and cancelling the (a^2 - ab) from both sides gives 1=2. -

👆 this is good, destroyer, but it's a mathematical impossibility. You can't just "cancel" AB-AB from both sides, because AB-AB is always zero.
